5.29s om 35s May be a bit steep. Won’t hurt anything but your gas mileage. It will keep the revs up higher, which depending on the weight of your trailer, may not be a completely terrible idea.

i estimate that the trailer will weigh fully loaded around 1,100 lbs...is that overkill? i am considering the other use for the truck for sure so 4.88 is totally not out of the equation when the 5.29 become available...

Ok for us that don't know what would this gear ratio do for me. If someone already answered this my apologies.

i think i am in similar situation as you are where i might wait until somebody do it first before i actually put this on to my truck, 'cause i have no idea what this will do to how i use the truck for...i wanted to do overlanding and a little bit of borderline rock crawling just because i leave close to big bear California, which has a lot of good trails to go to on weekend trips, but my passion really is for overlanding expeditions that take on trails for several days...i have a feeling 4.88 with rear lockers will be enough for what i plan to do, but the possibility of putting on 37s even 40s in the future is at the back of my mind...hard to decide until i see application of 5.29

4:88's would be nice and 5:29 even better if and when I'm ready to make that leap it will be USA made Nitro's from "Just Diffs". Revolutions do have a nice point compared to Nitro"s.

I will be installing my 4.88s and auburn LSD in week, the biggest benefit will be the shifting with the 35" tires. 20180924_202104.jpg

The power train working harder is the issue. It causes more heat, wear, strain, etc, all of which correlates to a decrease in efficiency. Think of diff gears as a 10 spd bicycle. If you pick a specific combination, you may pedal super easy and fast but not get much movement. Conversely, you could pick gears that will give you much movement, but will be REALLY hard to pedal or get started. It’s about finding the sweet spot and generally that’s what the oem shipped the truck with. Sometimes, depending on vehicle application or use, you want to over gear or under gear. For our trucks, 4.88s puts you at near the factory ratio. Meaning the power train would work similarly to as if you hadn’t added the 35s. 5.29s would be too steep for 35s, but are better for 37” tires. With 40s, you want something more.

To sum it up, changing your diff gears helps utilize mechanical advantage of gear ratios to reduce the overall power output required to be put forth by the truck, meaning you will gain fuel efficiency. The net gain will vary significantly, based on a whole bunch of factors, but efficiency will be had nonetheless. Assuming the driving condition is the same before and after the heat change.

So I have 34x11x20's with heavy wheels, a topper, truck bed system, aftermarket bumper, etc. etc. I tow mostly for work (40k miles easily a year) with a 5,000k trailer. Would my mileage go up with new gears? any rough idea of what kind of increase I might see?

Yes, your mileage will increase. By how much? That’s impossible for me to calculate. It depends on driving pattern, environmental condition, etc, etc. I can tell you for a fact that you will see an increase, simply from the mechanical advantage of your gears, but if you’re driving 40k a year, you would easily make your money back in fuel savings for the cost of regearing plus some. Some guys claim almost stock mileage with 35s and 4.88s, which may be a 40% increase. Even at 25% though, the $2k it costs for gears, will continue to get cheaper and heaped the more miles you drive. Your ROI on driving that many miles in a year can be huge.

I just want to get a LSD on my supercharged crewmax. Need to find some place locally in Southern California that I can purchase from and get it installed by.

I'm interested in the durability of the 5.29 once they make them for the front dif. We have huge 3rd members (insert childish joke here), but the smaller ring in the front will be subject to a different level of abuse. Most gear breaks that I've heard of have been on 5.29, but usually it was their own fault - in reverse, under high load in 4low. That's a recipe for disaster for any gear set, but seems more common in the 5.29 than in sets with more pinion teeth. I know there are arguments all over about whether pinion tooth number accounts for anything, but I want to see some real world 4x4 testing in high torque situations - that's where shit breaks.

Yea, that's the same reasoning I have for why I'm skeptical but I'm going to keep faith in Nitro and their quality (ie. and their real world testing they do before they release) so I'm holding out until their gears come out next year. My Nitro 4.88s have been great so far and I've only ever heard great things about Nitro for almost the past decade since I've been wheeling.

Having a 2wd CrewMax with 285/65-18 tires wound it be better to go with the 4.88 or 5.29 set for towing my 33' travel trailer.

We have our pre-order in the for the 5.29's and those we will be getting REM polished like our normal stock. Hope to have them in our hands late March and then we will be installing a set in our shop truck so that we have some first hand experience. Some people on here know that we don't treat our shop truck nicely when it comes to testing. haha.
