Depends on the 4runner. My 2001 (like Tucsons) had 2wd, AWD, 4Hi (center locked), and 4Lo. My girlfriend's 4th gen (2003) has AWD all the time and then 4Hi (center locked) and 4Lo, but no 2WD capability at all. Some 4Runners are traditional and some have AWD, depends on the year (changes among even the same generation) and trim level.

    4hi, 4lo, and 2hi.

I know the 3rd gen 4r had both depending on the engine in them.
The V8 had full time but the V6 part time.
Pretty sure the 4th gen are all part time but not betting money on it either!

I've had AWD (Audi) and 4WD in Tundras. The AWD Audi was what I preferred taking to the mountains to ski when I lived in Vermont. The Tundra was good, but not quite as firm a feel on the road. And both had full on winter tires, Hakka 5's on the Audi, and Hankook Winter tires (Nokian tread) on the Tundra all the way around on both. I typically kept the Tundra in 2wd unless I was having to take off in deep snow, or things got very deep on the road. If I was having issues in 2wd, it meant time to slow down and think about maybe 4wd.

as long as you had the torsen version in the audi, the haldex versions were considered inferior and put in to save money.

Yes, this was a 2002 a6, it was fun driving it in snow over the hood, with all 4 tires sending up rooster tails as they dug in! My wipers couldn't keep up with the snow coming over the hood at times!

My 2001 Land Cruiser and 2015 Sienna with AWD are outstanding in slippery conditions. This will be the first winter that I have had a selectable 4wd since I moved to Montana, so I am looking forward to seeing how it compares.

should have 2wd, 4h, 4lo with manual selector just like God intended. No buttons needed

If God had a plan here it would be whatever the Land Cruiser has and there is no manual selector there.
How is this not obvious really?

not 100% sure what that is but I hope it doesn't have 4x4 buttons on the center console where I'll always be bumping them

Land Cruisers are always in 4wd.
If you can't avoid spilling your drinks there are groups for that too.

4 Auto in the domestics usually sucks. It only sends power to the front axle when the rear starts to slip. Ram uses a Borg Warner transfer case with clutches that wear and eventually won’t keep the front driveshaft engaged when the front wheels have traction and the rear are slipping. It’s a terrible system but it will make it through the warranty period.

I would love full time 4 wheel drive with a locking center differential in a pickup.

I read this thread looking for clarity but I'm more confused now that before. o_Oo_Oo_O

First Question; what is the diff btwn AWD and 4WD? I thought the difference btwn them was that 4WD has a transfer case and is lockable, whereas AWD does not have a transfer case and uses the brakes to transfer power to the wheels with grip.

What's so special about the Subaru system and can someone school me on it?

Second Question; does the Tundra system allow you to use 4WD on asphalt or when it's raining. My primary concern and use for AWD/4WD is for commuting (going up and down hills) during inclement weather. For example when it's raining and cold, therefore the chance of black ice. Or when it's starting to snow but hasn't covered the entire roadway.

I know some 4WD systems can cause binding and therefore should NOT be used on asphalt.

I thought it might be obvious that I was talking about modern SUV style Cruisers and not the actual real things.

Shame on you for not knowing between the lines!:boink:

    in a nutshell...

most awd systems are based on the ecu using the brakes to modulate the traction.

some have the ability to sorta e-lock the front/rear temporarily up to like 25-30 mph and they disengage (rav4, etc)

some of the higher end awd have a center diff or front/rear/center diff's like the top of the line wrx sti's (but remember these a uni-body vehicles not BoF trucks, so its mostly for city/crap weather/tracking in the sti's sense)

full time 4WD is rarity since usually they employ a center torsen diff (so you dont bind on pavement since you are sending power 40/60 typically all the time) and the ability have a low end gear (aka 4runner limited). some of the higher end full times have front/center/rear so you can lock the fronts (both spin together) center (front and rear spin together) or rear (both rear spin together), usually i see that on g class or other high end vehicles.

and then you have the upper extremes with portal axles.

    Not "most". Just "some"

I've never owned a vehicle with such an AWD system, and we've owned plenty of Subarus and I currently own a AWD Q60, maybe some chintzy newer CUVs use the brakes to limit wheelspin, but certainly not most.

Yota could easily use the TOD (torque on demand) Borq Warner transfer case if they wanted to. Toyota currently use the Borq Warner SOTF (shift on the fly) transfer case. The TOD is more expensive than the SOTF because it has clutch plates and an electromagnet to allow slip.

I had the TOD in a F150 and I thought it was great when you have patchy snow. I really like the front axle locking mechanism in the Toyota over the vacuum hubs of the Ford.

I've been wanting to explore this for a while but have only found one build and that was for swapping a Land Cruiser transfer case (which is full time 4WD) into a Gen 2 Tundra. Have you seen any build threads for putting a full time Multi-Mode case from a Sequoia into a Gen 1 Tundra?

    I wouldn’t trade 4hi/4Lo of awd/full-time/4auto

But having the option for awd would affect my truck buying decision. Luckily, GM Ford and Ram all offer 4Auto cases with 4hi and 4lo so its not an issue.

I wont speak to Ram or GM’s systems since ive never used them, but Fords 4auto doesnt just send power forward when the rears slip. Its constantly varying torque to the front.

Ive not heard of people ruining t-cases on Fords unless they are trying to boost launch(supercharged 5.0 or Ecoboost) a tuned truck with 600+ ft-lbs of torque

Your missing the best part of your limiteds t-case. 4Lo unlocked. Great for moving trailers around the yard or general offroading

You tcase shouldnt be binding though. My lexus GX has rhe same t-case and the system is virtually transparent

    Many on the way.
The Toyota multimode transfer cases do it all, 2WD, AWD in high or low, locked center diff in high or low.... the Torsen T3 center diff is excellent. The Tundra could probably utilize the rear Torsen from the LX600, which will certainly help.
