Hey guys I hope you can help. No check engine light. I replaced both cats on the passenger side. Getting a throaty sound on the passenger side when accelerating and if I hit it hard it surges and bogs and you hear valves rattle like something is stopping it from accelerating. This is only under load. In park or neutral it revs like it wants to race. I changed the passenger side cats thinking that was causing it. Nope lol. Please help.

Maybe try running with cats off one and then the other. See if you hear anything or feel anything different coming from the exhaust.

I changed the passenger side cats already. No change. I’m thinking now it may be fuel pump gone bad. I’ve never dropped a tank befor so not sure if I can do this. Ugh!

I haven't owned a Tundra for long enough to give you a specific location for the part, however my first step would be to check/replace the fuel filter.

No fuel filter other than the sock on the pump in the tank.

Yes you are correct filter Is embedded in the fuel pump in the tank.
That is one possibility that I’m looking at but when In part or neutral the engine revs perfectly with no loss of power. It onli happens when under load which now makes me think it’s transmission is the problem. So when I floor the pedal it down shifts to last gear like a passing gear and rpms start to go up but hardly no speed increase and then the rev limiter kicks in. So maybe my tranny is slipping. I haven’t checked the fluid level yet I’ve been down with the flu last two days. Ugh. I will update at what I find.

What were your symptoms on your 08 if I mar ask? And did you replace the pump and did it fix your problem.

It would make it to about 2500-3000 rpm and act like someone killed spark to the motor. Id let off the foot pedal and it would act fine. If you have a fuel pressure tester that would tell you if the pump is failing. Yes, fuel pump cured my issue.

But yours is still revving and slipping?

That’s what it seems like but revs fine In park. Only when It’s under load do I get these symptoms. Yes there is a surging feeling while normal driving and then if I stomp the gas pedal it downshifts and rpms go up but truck is not picking up speed and it just seems like I’ve got no power. Which is why I thought it was the cats. So my two other tries is tranny fluid is low and or slipping or like yours fuel pump isn’t working correctly. The tundras have a sealed Tran so once I get better from this flu I will do a drain to measure how much fluid comes out and go from there. This will be interesting to say the least.

Yep, mine would rev fine in park & neutral. Do you have a fuel pressure tester?

I'll add this in...mine showed proper pressure at idle and while revving in park. I took it for a drive with the gauge propped up under my wiper blade. thats where it told the truth. It was dropping under load

No I don’t have a tester. I may just go ahead and drop the tank. Does anyone know how hard that is? I’ve never took one down before.

I just did mine last night. Mostly by myself. Had my son help me set it back up in since you have to snake the two tubes up over the frame rail. I had my whole job done in about 3 hours. Search YouTube, there's a vid showing how it's done.

Me personally, I wouldnt drop it until you do a fuel pressure test. Unless you like tearing things and potentially creating new problems then be my guest!

I’ll watch the YouTube video first and see how hard it looks. I’m thinking I’m gonna need a second hand anyway to help me. But I’m not too afraid these things. I’ve been through worst lol. Like a 10 hour timing belt change on a Honda mini van lol. Which was my fault because I was by myself and didn’t see the cam gear move one notch on me which caused It not to start so I had to tear it all back down again. That was a bad day lol

My experience with failing fuel pumps is that they can provide correct pressure UNTIL more flow is needed - that is, when they are under a load....

This sounds a lot like what I've been seeing with my 4.6L for the past few months. I did have the transmission drained and filled (not flushed), but it didn't seem to change anything. It was left at the shop overnight so they tested it cold and warm and didn't see anything.

I did find that cleaning the throttle body and MAF cleared it up for a few days, then it started acting off again. After that, a bottle of Seafoam in the gas tank took care of it for a month or so. I've kept doing that and it seems to keep fixing it. I hadn't considered the fuel pump. It has some sort of aftermarket muffler but not sure about the rest of the exhaust.

Ok I replaced the fuel pump. Same issue no change. So that wasn’t it. Then saw a post on someone with same exact symptoms as mine so I changed the cam angle sensor. Still no difference so that’s not it. I cleaned the throttle body and the maf sensor still no change. Pulled the battery cables to do a idle relearn. No difference in performance but does idle better now. So I’m down to the last thing I’ve read about bad injectors and ECM going bad. One or both ugh. Check engine light is not lit up. But if I do a scan with my reader I find “random misfire codes. But only get this if I try to romp on the gas pedal. If I drive it slow and accelerate easy I get no codes. So maybe injectors. So I’ve decided to trade the truck in. My Nissan Titan was so easy to work on and this truck is a freakin nightmare to work on. Thanks everyone responded and tried to help.
