I see that this post is an older one so I am curious as to what truck you ended up with. There are many opinions on this and I don't believe that you will be unhappy with either decision honestly. Yes the mileage isn't much of a difference to be too concerned with IMO and I don't think that most people buy these trucks or any truck for that matter with gas mileage as the biggest issue. A truck gives you so much versatility that it's the trade off. I own an 04 with the 4.7 liter and it is very capable of doing what ever I ask it to do. Toyota makes a great engine no matter which one you choose.

that is EXACTLY why i traded mine in. Mine had 4.10 gears, newer ones have 3.90 i think. It’s not enough for the motor style. It’s not a chevy 350, it needs RPM’s. The 4.6L trucks should have 4.56 gears stock and then they would never be hunting, that would also make up for lower torque than the 5.7

In the market for a used tundra as my 2001 w 213k miles is guna make way for a retirement gift to myself. I found a 2018 w a 4.6 at a great price and may go test drive it. I tow a 3500 lb bassboat locally twice a month and my 2001 seems to slow down going up the slighted of hills. Not sure if she’s just old but I would hope a 2018 tundra w basically same motor could tow boat better. I drive slow anyways so I don’t think I need extra power, but my budget is keeping me from getting a 5.7 w low miles.

The 4.6 actually has more torque than the 4.7.

I pulled 5500-6k up mountain grades with my 4.6 and it accelerated. Zero issue
