So I realize my tundra has one of the worst gas mileages of any truck. But i was ok with it; especially since they have the 38 gallons fuel tank option.

    What a joke.

The issue is the gauge in the truck is only accurate for the stock 28 gallon tank! Lame.
Essentially the gauge only accounts for 28 gallons.

I bought this assuming the 38 gallon tank and the gas gauge worked accurately.

    nope.

I took it in to the dealership and none of the salesmen or mechanics knew about this. Not cool. They said that it is a 38 gallon tank but that theres an "air gap at top" and "once you put in the fuel pump" your down to around 28 gallons. What a joke. bullshitting me.

They should disclose this to buyers. Never seen anything like it. I liked the idea of a 38 gallon tank and having a decent mile range.

But the dam "low fuel" light comes on and I'm lucky to get 375-400 miles per fill up.

If they provide a 38 gallon tank-- the gauge should be accurate to that many gallons......

The smaller tank is 26.9 and the light comes on around 20 gallons. The over cautious gas light is a very common complaint.

Toyotas light comes on early. Really early. In my 2012 i went past the light, past the E and filled up with close to 25 gallons out of the 26 gallon tank.
You have close to 38 gallons in that tank. You can use it if needed.

Yep....at "zero" miles I have about 6 gallons left in my 26 gal tank. Quite used to it. A built in reserve that will get another 60 to 80 miles depending on my speed. I have never gone below "zero" yet. Plenty of gas stations. The fuel pump also needs to be immersed in fuel.

the most ive ever filled in my 38gal was 33 gallons I believe. of course there is going to be a reserve for the guys that run past "0 miles to empty", but I think for the most part it's pretty true

Keep in mind that the 38 gallon tank is about 5' or 6' long. When you go down hill (or vice versa uphill) with an almost empty tank, you will have all the fuel in the front of the tank and nothing in the back. To keep the fuel pump submerged (or at least have access to fuel) it has to keep a minimum amount of fuel in the tank to always keep fuel available to the pump. I have also read that it is to keep the pump cool, but the physics of a long tank is the actual reason why you cannot run it empty. And the bigger (longer) the tank is, the more fuel will be needed, which is why the 38 gal tank has a bigger 'reserve' than the standard 26 gal tank. If you could have a 38 gal tank that is in the shape of an upright tube, this would not be necessary.

I guess I'm the only one that doesnt mind having a extra 5-6 gallons of fuel instead of the low fuel light popping up and having to rush to the nearest gas station

This could be cured with one of those fuel mat pick up devices that hot rodders used.

First off, welcome Bill! You are obviously very passionate about this issue. Some other members have voiced their concerns regarding this issue.

I would have to disagree with you in regards to the worst vehicle mileage as I average 19mpg (I do drive like a grandma though). My previous truck got 13.5 average mpg. So a lot of it is dependent upon how you drive as well.

Good Luck with your truck and show us some pics of that beauty!

Run your truck out of gas. Have 15 gallons of fuel in Jerry cans in the bed. I bet you put another 22.5 gallons in when stopping at the next fuel station.

All the auto manufactures do this "reserve" thing. This might be a surprise to you, but there are many people each year that actually run out of fuel. You see them all the time walking down the road with the little red gas can. Now if you were offering free roadside assistance for 2 years, wouldn't you make damn sure the average idiot doesn't run out of fuel three times per year?

Had the same issue with my Jeep. It had a 22.5 gallon tank and I could never put more than 19 gallons in it even when it was on E and the warning told me I had zero miles left.
