Maybe that gas station is scamming you. It must be tempting to tweak the gallons/pumped setting for anyone selling gas.

This comes up often but is actually one of the more heavily and accurately regulated industries in most states. From what I understand, commercial pumps are both inspected regularly and fined VERY harshly in instances in which they are inaccurate either purposefully or when not fixed after notification. Customer protection laws are pretty strong on that regard with little wriggle room.

The 2023 Manual says the low fuel light:
“Indicates that remaining fuel is approximately 3.4 gal. (13.0 L, 2.8 Imp. gal.) or less”
But sure seems like a lot a variability from people here.

thats the hard low limit for the light. but from actual experience, across all models within the last 7-15 yrs, that varies.

i know on the 38gal v8 engines, we have seen people fill anywhere from 6 to 8 gallons less when that light comes on to get to a full tank of 38 gals.

personally the wife freaks out if it gets below 1/2 tank, so we will never have that issue.

I just have a hard time understanding how neither the DTE mileage estimate nor the gas gauge include the reserve. I’ve never owned a vehicle where the miles remaining goes to zero and the gas gauge goes to E before the low fuel light comes on and then you have to guess how much remains.

The "reserve" is so the vehicle isn't fuel starved on an incline. Drop under the truck and look at how long the tank is. If you tilt that on a steep incline all the fuel runs to one end, and if it's the end that the fuel pickup is not at, well that ends badly. Toyota is very conservative with these numbers because there are so many people who run down to "empty" that they build in a buffer so somebody being an idiot doesn't become their headache.

its toyota being extremely over conservative to ensure the fuel pump doesnt burn out.

its why toyota went back to chains on most engines, too much hassle using belts in the long after they tried that route for a while. pay more up front on chains and save money on the back end on less warranty work.

if i remember correctly, chain engines are non interference vs belts with interference.
