How old are you going? I think the last year of the Excursion was 2005, I know the Suburban was more recent than that but at one point it was only fleet sales. Seems like one of the big three should be making a HD SUV, I would have considered it if there was a new option.

    Dump the Rancho shocks.

I started having a slight vibration at 20k miles. Balanced tires with no change. Road force balanced with no change. Checked run out on front bearing hubs. Good. Checked the runout on the rear bearing hubs. Good.

I tried balancing beads and new tires. No luck. Then it dawned on me that it could be shocks, even though I had really low mileage. That was my vibration problem. Two shocks were gone and a third was pretty useless. My truck never bobbed or acted like it was a shock problem, but the was the remedy. Tossed on some Bilstein 4600’s and the truck is very smooth on the road and off-road a total 180 in ride.

If I had to do it all over again, I would have purchased some smooth body 2.5” RR Kings. Those are amazing on a HD truck.

Do the Kings work with a stock ride height? Was thinking about the Bilstein 5100, was also looking at the Fox shocks.

    Yes.

Since you have the AT4, the Bilstein 5100’s would be appropriate for your truck. Same valving but a better finish (my opinion).

Buyer be where, I had a 2015 Ford f350, with gas engine. Tow rating was only 10,000 lbs. It was a 6.2 with six speed transmission and 373 gears. It had a load capacity of 4,250 lbs. Camper special.
In the 4 years I had it, it was in the shop 8 times for electrical problems. Two times I had to have it towed in. No fun when your camping.
I give up on it and went to Tundra, it pulls my 7,000 lbs trailer just as good as the Ford F350.

When I was researching HD trucks I definitely saw a lot of electrical issues with the Fords.

Only rated to tow 10k? I know the 6.2 isn’t the most powerful option out there but that is very low for an HD. My 6.6 gasser also has a 6 speed and 3.73 gears but is rated for 14,500 towing. Hills might be rough with that much weight though.

Looked into those King’s, the set would be at least $2,300. I can justify up to around $1,000, what is the best option in that price range? Mostly commuting but I also need it for towing and light duty off-road. Really want something to soften the blow on bad gravel roads, potholes or just rough patches of roads.

I like my Bilstein’s, but if I’m deadheading with my gooseneck and the craptastic concrete sections. It’s brutal. The bumps outrun my shocks.

Maybe check with @AccuTune Offroad if they have any deals going on. Having a set of professional tuned shocks is life changing.

Check your truck weight sticker on the door jam before you buy. There could be a big different between in trucks sticker and the new truck brochures.

GM discontinued the "3/4" ton after the 2013 model year. You can get a pretty low mileage one someplace I'm sure.

The new Chevy's are actually accurate
Haha, I have not even seen or heard of that one. Now I am intrigued!

My neighbor has a 2500 Suburban with the 8.1. I tell him all the time if he ever decides to sell, please let me know. He says he will never sell and people are all the time trying to buy it from him. They go for a pretty penny to say the least. They are beasts.

I would also gladly take a 7.3 Excursion!

I didn’t know that either to be honest.

My brother has two 8.1L vehicles. They move.

Was it a new Suburban with a diesel? I think the only factory one available is the mini Duramax in the 1500 Suburban. I believe they just brought the diesel Suburban back after a very long hiatus.

Are y’all hip to Duraburb? They put duramax drivetrains in Suburbans. I wanted one for the longest time.

But I had a lot of electrical gremlins to chase down with a 2002 Suburban we had for many years. It never stranded us, but it would stutter and act like it wanted to die when accelerating from a dead stop. It seemed to happen most on left turns. Finally figured out that a section of the wiring harness had come loose near the steering column, and the column was rubbing all the insulation off. Man, that was frustrating. Killed the Duraburb desire for me.

    https://www.roadandtrack.com/car-culture/a14418167/diesel-suburban-engine-swap-conversion/

“[Duraburb’s] wildest swap is a heavily-modified 2005 Suburban 3500 Heavy Duty, a 7300-pound truck that pushes out 1050 horsepower and almost 1900 lb.-ft. of torque. It can apparently do the quarter-mile in 11 seconds. For some context, that's as quick as a Dodge Challenger Hellcat.”

just traded my 2019 6.7 ford f250 for my tundra. Always been in diesels. First tundra. Tired of all the little shit and recalls. Pulled like a train though! Buy the extended warranty or delete. I have an old gm 3/4 ton work truck. So i hope this tundra is good for a long time!

Maybe it was an engine swap? Looks like the last factory diesel Suburban was in the 90’s, until the new 2021 mini duramax 1500.

You have to dig into the weeds to make sure you're getting the tow rating you actually want. I've been shopping too and found when comparing gasser F250/350 that the F250 actually tows more (both with 3.73). The F350 is bumper rated at 12k while the F250 is 12.5k. The F350 does have about 1k more payload capacity though. Again this was with the 6.2.

GM has really upped their game with the '20 model changeover. I drove a WT 3500 Duramax SRW today and it rode just as smooth as my Tundra. 4k payload and a 20k bumper-pull tow rating. Huge interior.

That’s exactly what I pulled up when deciding between gas and diesel and 2500 vs 3500.

I really like how GM is made it so easy to understand your numbers. I’m getting antsy waiting for this truck

I can’t remember who was asking about shocks on these trucks. If you have Rancho’s, dump them immediately.

You also might look into Centramatics for your truck and trailer. No more tire balancing, just rotations. I borrowed a set from a buddy to just experience and ordering my own set today (truck and trailer).

    Trailer
    https://www.centramatic.com/wheel-balancer.rhtml?modelNumber=300-318

    Truck
    https://www.centramatic.com/wheel-balancer.rhtml?modelNumber=300-320

Truck and trailer rode so smooth. The tire life they extend will pay off over time.

Just watched all of their videos and the one that BTBRV did. I knew the name sounded familiar. I will definitely pick up a set. Solely for the fact that it costs me $100 just to road force balance. They would pay for themselves in about 6 months.

I am hoping the truck doesn't come with Rancho shocks, but if they do 4600s aren't expensive

    Thanks for the info.

    2016 TRD Off Road Inferno
    A bunch
GM is doing what Tundra does in half tons - your truck has this engine in this body style, here's the payload and towing; with the caveat of the de-rated 3/4 tons from 11500 GVWR to 9999 GVWR that some need for commercial reasons. Like with Ram I still don't know without a VIN search to know if it has the HO 6.7 and Aisin or the regular stuff (and less ratings) and with Ford you have 5 rear gears and suspension options to tweak how much they can carry/tow. I like it when you can quickly look at a truck and know how capable it is. And another great sticker GM has is max tow rating stickers on the door jamb - no more digging through a PDF of 20 pages to find a tow rating.
