How come no one talks about the Dodge and Ford V-10s much any more? I remember 10 or 15 years ago they were a big deal. You'd think they would be the bomb for heavy trailer towing.

The Dodge V-10 had plenty of issues (crankshaft) and really didn’t pull well. I had both Ford and Dodge V-10 trucks and the Ford was a better puller.

If you are not paying for fuel, the ford v10 isn’t bad option.

Didn't the Expedition come with a V10 option?

In 2007, I was driving a Ford van with a V-10 for NOLS. We were pulling rafting trailers for the Salmon River expeditions; 80-mile runs with 670 mile shuttles, r.t.

Yepper. I used to drive a gov issued one for Arctic training. Toss all your gear in the back and pile everyone in. They actually didn’t do real bad in the freeway mpg wise. (16 mpg).

    I can’t even guess.

When I would pull a remote control shaker on a flatbed trailer, the dodge v10 was around 5-6 mpg and struggling to keep speed. The ford did much better in this department.

A coworker of mine bought a 3/4 ton Ford truck V10 in 2007, said he could a great deal on it. When gas went to $4.50 a gallon in 2008, he got rid of it.

The Ford truck was averaging 11 mpg.

Another friend had a 28' Class C motorhome, with the Ford V10.
The engine went out at 32,000 mile (Warranty Repair) Ford just replace the broken piston and one head. Was in the Shop for three months.

With the diesel it was pretty good gearing. The gassers...not so much.

That sounds about right when I was towing with them.

From my brother's experience, the newer Dodge 5500 gassers aren't any better in the fuel economy department when towing...

I’m not sure why anyone would want that kind of capacity in a truck and then put a gasser for a power plant in. Lmao.

Well, I guess that might make more sense. Heavy payloads and employees that might not take care of a diesel.

Something else is…Canada. I heard I can get cold up there and diesels might be a pita. But that’s just hearsay….:anonymous:

Not many weeds to spray in winter. But yeah, I don't imagine they let their equipment sit 6 months of the year.

probably swap out the tank and sprayer for a sander and plow. Never know though. Maybe the owners are avid skiers. :D

The diesels up here for a month or two can either be running or plugged in for quite a few companies. Haven't heard of fuel issues from stations with decent turnover, but have seen a few DEF freeze ups.

I've also seen a couple cranes go down from guys not doing the start up procedures correctly. While it may seen simple to make sure the frost fighters have heated the engines up before cranking, they keep making dumber idiots.

The hemis are ticking time bombs with the camshaft/lifter issues. Also, Ford gave the 6.2 it’s own tranny starting in 2017 so it’s a bit peppier than the 2011-2016 6.2 that used the same transmission as the power stroke.

Don't know exactly why the few DEF freezing has caused the trucks to go into limp mode, but that's by far the number 1 cause for trucks to end up in the shop - emissions failures in winter. Really sucks for the guys who had it happen 400 km away from a dealership, had a couple guys have to do 10 hour drives at 30 km/h.

The DEF tank heater probably failed. I would not drive that long at 30 km/h...ouch.

Just wanted to share this vote of confidence I observed the other night… I don’t know anything about the situation … but the white truck behind (behind the rear of) the rigs is a mobile mechanic. I suppose the hood up in this situation is never really a positive thing… right? Talk about a very expensive trip to Target.

Looks to me, the trailer is to much for that truck. My old 2015 f350 6.2L gasser tow rating was for 10,000 lbs.
But it was rated for 4,250 lbs payload. To bad it was in the shop 8 times in 3 yrs for repairs.

If the red truck is the new 7.3L that truck is a beast. That motor/trans combo is best out there. We will see about reliability with the years to come
