My Platiium weighed 6,440 pounds with only me in it. Leaving me 760 pounds of available payload.

The 2500 HD weighs 7,400 with me in it, leaving 3,250 of available payload. There is quite a difference!

I think I might sell my tundra.. Looks like I'll be in the market for a used Chevy or ford still debating on what I want.

About the same for my 6.6 gasser, closing in on 10k miles. Down to about 9mpg towing but any gas option will be similar.

Since everyone is sharing my Ram has about 4200 miles on it I'm averaging 10.6 mpg towing my 7600 lb toy hauler and about 15 mpg around town without it. I'm really happy with it don't regret getting rid of the Tundra one bit just hope she's reliable only time will tell. Oh and I love the interior :)

And....100 times more likely to problematic in the future compared to the tundra . That's where many of us have a hard time sacrificing tried and true reliability for increased payload capability . All depends what your needs are I guess

Yeah. I don't want a longer wheelbase, worse turning radius, or higher probability of issues, but damn, my Tundra is overweight every time we go camping. When I weighed myself on the CAT scale, my bed had ample room for more stuff, and I was still 200lb overweight. I'm in a crewmax with a payload rating of 1270 and GVWR of 7200.

I bet most people who build their Tundras suspect that they're overweight, but they won't go weigh it with a full tank of gas and all occupants in it. It would confirm their fears.

I'm going to wait for the 2022 specs to drop before jumping to an HD truck. If the 2022 has substantially higher payload, I may go for it. Or I'll just say screw it and drive around totally overweight, like every single Tundra I saw in Colorado last week.

I completely agree ! IMO a couple or even a few hundred pounds over payload isn't the end of the world . its not going to hurt the truck .
In my situation , the 3 or 4 times I tow my travel trailer every year I am not worried about being over payload , I've never weighed my setup but I'm pretty sure that I am over loaded . Truck drives and handles fine , I just stick to the speed limit and don't push it .

The family and I are heading out camping for the first weekend of august and I think Ill stop by a cat scale on the way .

Im not endorsing being overweight. However I personally am probably over gvwr when we go camping by a little and it does not bother me at all.

i was a gm guy before buying my first tundra in 05. Coming from that world, we saw tons of early trans/rear axle failures. How many of those issues have we seen in tundras? Statistically zero. In just comparing half tons, the tundra is good beef

Oh you absolutely can't beat the reliability of a Tundra. I was significantly over weight. That's why I had to upgrade. If my payload rating was 1300 and a couple times a year I was running around at 1500-1700 I wouldn't care one bit.

I get what your saying Toyota makes a reliable truck but until they make a 3/4 ton I guess we can't really compare reliability to the "big three". I will say this though when you compare the Tundra to other 1/2 tons yeah its the most reliable.

    Never weighed it.

    But rough math was:
    Truck Cap 200
    Myself 200
    Dogs 150
    Dog crates 125
Rocks lots and lots of rocks. I would put 1000 to 1500 of rocks in the bed alone.

Then my tractor hitch weight was probably 750lbs.

Lets just say I overload the tundra almost every weekend. But it handled it as well as it could. But, it was time to get a HD

The HD trucks are built far more durable than their 1/2 ton counterparts, but when it comes to 1/2 tons the tundra would be my only choice.

My needs dictated an HD truck due to my Rv (tongue weight over 1000lbs and 32’ is beyond my comfort zone with a 5.5’ bed truck) and also hauling since I don’t have a flatbed trailer at this time. I’d be over twice the payload of the tundra several times a year with hauling sod, dirt, rocks, and mulch if I had kept mine.

The only parts that are built heavier are the suspension components , as for durability I beg to differ , as a fleet mechanic who maintains over 100 mixed domestic 3/4 and 1 tons I sure replace a lot of front end suspension and steering components . I cannot agree that 3/4 and 1 tons are more durable than the half ton counter part . ( Talking Gasser's here )

As for mechanical drivetrain issues and electrical problems , fords 7.3 and 6.2 gassers are fairly trouble free , Rams 6.4 is plagued with the same camshaft and lifter issues as the smaller 5.7 , Gm's 6.6 is fairly trouble free except for a few injector failures and variable oil pump issues that I've seen, Gm's 6 Speed transmission have been bad for torque converter issues .
Its pretty much just pick your poison .

My buddy has a 2007 tundra crewmax with 325000 kms , Never changed a ball joint, steering rack or tie rod , front end is still tight to this day .

Seeing and having to fix this domestic junk everyday leaves a bad taste in my mouth and Ill forever be hesitant to get back into owning one on my own ,

To those here have chose to move to a domestic 3/4 or 1 ton , no doubt those trucks are beautiful and are very capable but I hate to be the one to burst your bubble but give it a few years and you will see the degrading of the truck in multiple aspects . I believe it to just be the norm when dealing with any domestic vehicle , they literally are engineered to last until warranty is up and then nickel and dime you to death . Again just my experience .

And brakes, and cooling, and transmissions, and hubs, and frames....

I do agree, though. I intentionally keep my truck needs within the limits of the Tundra so I don't have to go get a 1 ton truck.

Do you have any tundra's in your fleet lineup to compare to the 3/4 and 1 tons?

Do you have any Tundras that do the same work in the same conditions carrying the same weight as those HD trucks?

We all like to trash the big three, but they sell a shit ton of trucks, so they can’t be all completely crap. Sure Tundras have proven reliability no doubt there, but I rarely see a GM, Ford or RAM broke down on the side of the highway either.

It’s more the constant trips back to the dealer, recalls, randomly going into limp mode, and difficulty of self-maintenance because they’re not intended to be maintained and kept for extremely long times that made me go with the Tundra.

But yes, if I’m being honest, stranding my family and me out in the middle of nowhere is a concern as well.

Those fleet trucks are generally loaded down with tools/hooked up to trailers 95% of the time and have the piss driven out of them. No half tons would stand up to the amount of abuse the HD trucks take. Not to mention you can’t compare 1 personal truck to a fleet of 100 work trucks that are used and abused. At the end of the day Toyota doesn’t have an hd truck so we have to choose from the big 3

I can't tell you how many people throughout my life would only buy GM. Heck, my dad will only buy Ford. The big three sell well because they have brand loyalty. Think about this, I have an employee with a Dodge Dakota that lost his rear end with low miles on the truck. Guess what brand his next truck was?

Nobody ever brings up the Titan XD. It appears to have a decent gvwr but still has a semi floating axle for example

I think you’d find the majority of folks on this forum only buy Toyota’s. That’s why they are the worlds largest automaker.

Agreed. What is funny is I was a Chevy guy when I was younger. Then three Ford’s, now Toyota since I did not have one issue with my 2014 Tundra. We will see how this 2020 goes.

I was actually really looking at getting one, but it's priced the same or higher than 3/4 or 1 tons, so there's no point in buying the XD

totally agree, however i am curious what on it is so much stronger than a tundra to get the higher rating
