Purely speculative based upon visual observation.

Same as me concluding that this is not aerodynamic. Don't need tests to prove it.

    All in good fun.

Did they share the actual results, or just claims? Was it performed by an unbiased 3rd party? All I've seen so far are Marketing claims.
    Just being inquisitive/devils advocate.

This talks about it in more detail:
    https://www.thedrive.com/news/42468...ons-lets-nerd-out-with-a-pre-production-truck

Its not just the shape that matters, cross sectional area is a factor too. By lowering itself it is reducing cross section. There are clever ways flat surfaces can be used to trap air and "round out" the shape to manage air flow. The Cybertruck's flat nose is a great example of this effect.

Interesting. Thanks. Now we need to figure out how to add that controllable air dam to current gen.

This is what I have been waiting for to get me out of my 2009 Tacoma which is the best vehicle I have ever owned by far. Previous Tundra MPG was just too much of a penalty but the new platform fixes that. I trust Toyota to do this hybrid powertrain right, as well as having way better overall quality than the domestics. The other modernizations are also very welcome. I hope the chip and other supply issues don't push out production too long.

Unless Toyota really screws up this new Tundra, two things are basically guaranteed.

    (1) It will be the most reliable hybrid truck on the market, which will increase its resale. Yes - battery replacement - but with a good warranty and proper maintenance this shouldn’t be an issue. It’s not on other Toyota hybrids.

    (2) It will meet or exceed its EPA MPG rating, just like all other Toyota hybrids do. If you speed or start fast, you won’t see much benefit from the hybrid. But under normal (90% of what domestic pickups do) driving conditions this thing will be awesome. There will be MPG competition threads on this site in no time. Toyota turns it into a game with the “efficiency scores” and the grades it provides for braking, acceleration, etc.

Have a little faith in Toyota until proven otherwise. The Ford hybrid truck is about to become an afterthought, just like their other hybrid vehicles.

I wanted a faster vehicle so I also bought a Chevy SS... because 4 door sedans with big V8’s are hilarious.
That article is not worth reading, the author knows less about the 2022 Tundra than my dogs.

I will make no effort to hypermile a pickup truck, and will continue to drive 85 MPH on the highway whenever possible. In South Dakota and Wyoming the posted limit on I-90 is 80 MPH so 85 MPH isn’t exactly profligate speeding.

That site reads like a bot put it together based on search queries. Beyond the "Toyota made a truck" "The truck has an engine and wheels" not much to garner from the article.
It looks like a web scrapping bot assembled the article for clicks.

    LOL.

Even at stoplights and drive throughs? Parking lots? Funeral processions?

You should try to make a list of situations boost is not appropriate, and set out to be in boost at those times.

I was at a fuel pump today and realized that if it got 25 mpg combined real world mileage, that would give it an even 800 mile range. I’d be willing to bet you that’s probably what they were aiming for.

I ran some calculations the other night in my hotel room (boredom set in waiting for an East bound train).

Operating on the assumption that the iForceMax gets the 32.2 gallon tank, and the tank will get down to fuel light illuminated level holding 6 gallons in reserve to keep the fuel pump fully submerged and cooled. So we have nominally 26.2 gallons to play with before the fuel light.

At 23 MPG combined that will give a range of 603 miles with a 138 mile “reserve”.

24 MPG combined renders 629 miles to the fuel light, and 144 miles reserve.

25 MPG combined gives 655 miles of range before low fuel warning and a reserve of 150 miles.

Any of those figures give a significant range advantage over my old 5.7L with a 26.4 gallon fuel tank.

I also tried to guesstimate a torque curve plot, but having only two data points of 583lb-ft @ 2400 RPM and 441lb-ft @ 5200 RPM made it difficult.

well technically is less aero than a typical brick. that has a raised protrusions that add more drag than what a brick has :) lol

Pretty cool thx. I've found that tonneau covers do not help at all, yet one would think they should. So, raising the rear with RAS or airbags effectively lowers the front giving a better wedge and may help too. We need to create a mechanical shutter for the front lower air dam.

Early, I thought it made it into production. EPA exempt because they couldn't test it properly and drive it over 60mph without it wandering.

RE: Tonneau. Hard or soft matters too but not to a great degree; favors soft. The weight might also be offsetting any gains if its a heavier design. It still wont be as good as the angled back in the video. Its likely the air from the roofline is already shaped into hitting the tailgate spoiler in the Gen 2.5 design (reducing the bed turbulance). Tonneau is only shrinking the trapped air pocket behind the cab.

RE: Air Dam. Keep in mind it only needs to be as low as the lowest components. So if the rear diff is the lowest point at 10 inches off the ground then your dam only need be 10 inches from the ground. Some newer techniques use channeled air to join the air passing below the vehicle; I think this would be difficult to achieve on Tundra. I've seen an inflatable air damn somewhere, I think at speed you may end up getting oscillation if its not firm enough to resist the wind pushing on it.

There is a patent for the later:

In this day and age EVERYTHING can be construed as being political- I'll leave it there without giving hundreds of examples.
Back to the topic.... the RAM with the V6 or Hemi says with their hybrid it goes up 2 mpg and most improvement is with city driving but theirs does not run on the hybrid by itself ever where as the Toyota I think runs up to 18 mph just by itself? So I would imagine it would be a much greater efficiency over the RAM system.
