Unsold inventory in days of supply for full-size trucks from Ford, GM, Ram, and Toyota based on the most recent data:

    Brand
    Model(s) Days of Supply Notes
Ford F-150, F-250, F-350 131–134 days; Inventory remains high; over 200,000 trucks on lots.
GM Silverado 1500, Sierra 1500 88–90 days; GM paused production to manage inventory.
Ram Ram 1500 97–107 days; Inventory recently reduced from 128 days.
Toyota Tundra ~36 days; Toyota has the lowest supply among major brands.
Quick Insight: Domestic brands (Ford, GM, Ram) are sitting on significantly more inventory than Toyota, which is facing tight supply and high demand. That means more negotiating power if you're eyeing a Ford or Ram, and less flexibility on Toyota pricing.

Your point is either Toyota does know how to execute or they don't need to do anything different because they have lower inventory? Both are true. Especially compared to GM and Ford. That said, I think they have incremental upside if they do a mid-cycle refresh on a tighter timeline. Call it Tech+ or some marketing non-sense and do better on the driving assist features, fix the stereo, remote start, radio knob, etc. In the absence of that, people like me that are ready to buy again may cross shop when they ordinarily wouldn't.

If you are selling 1m trucks a year like Ford and GM you can stack them deeper.

90 days is considered optimal for volume salers. You are not awash in trucks but you don't lose sales due to limited inventory or option/trim/color availability. Some manufacturers over produce for model year cut over as well. Guessing Ford is doing that since last qtr sales were up.

Tundra sales are slightly down first half of 25. Interesting trend is GMC is creeping up on Ram to become the 3rd highest volume name plate. Later part of last decade Ram was outselling Chevy occasionally for a qtr. Now they are having to promise mucho changes in 26 to just keep GMC at bay.

Good analysis. Toyota can probably run a little tighter on inventory because they have a relatively simple number of configurations compared to others.

IMO Toyota has probably lost a good number of sales over the years due to their persistent lack of inventory and choice. The first time I bought a Toyota truck (2009 Tacoma) I looked for months until I found the trim, color and bed I wanted, then had to get it transferred from another dealer. The last time, 2023 Tundra, I found the color and bed but couldn't find the trim. I'd probably upgrade now if I could find what I am looking for, but I can't find it. Well, I actually finally found one, the *first one* since I started looking at these things in 2022, but it was not my local dealer and it got sold already. But that is the only one I ever found. And I look quite often. I find shopping for these to be very frustrating.

I agree, when it becomes difficult to buy something, I don't. I've started using brokers and for me it's faster, cheaper and less hassle.

For a long time Toyota was synonymous with quality and longevity.

Today, that’s questionable. As it is with every other brand. None are immune to the growing pains and quality control misses in today’s “first to market”world.

But what has set Toyota apart, and hopefully continues to, is the central tenet of Kaizen.

So in twenty years the fourth gen guys will be lamenting over the loss of the third gen.

    And so it goes…

Agreed. I hope the 3rd gen does get its issues ironed out and is indeed missed.

I was definitely Toyota loyal for a long time, but after seeing repeated mistakes/issue (that appear to be more cost cutting than anything) that make me question them a bit, I’ve definitely backed off cramming Toyota down people’s throats. I’m more in a “get whatever makes you happy, all makes kinda suck right now” state of mind. Except when it comes to Ford, they’re at what, 90 recalls so far in 2025?

If you ask me what I’d replace my 4Runner with today, I honestly don’t know. I used to say 3G Tundra, then the V35A issues emerged. I was lost after that. Now I lean to a 6th gen 4Runner, but they’re still too new to see if issues appear. With the rumblings of Japanese made T24s failing in a little concerned. I’d love to find a used 2.5G Tundra but prices are insane.

No smog for 6 years for new vehicles in nazi California then you can extend it for another 2 years before you have to smog it. I did that for both my Tacoma and 4runner, however with new ruling for Clean Air Act and defunding of CARB we might not even need to smog anymore... :fingerscrossed:

Every state gets it from you somehow. Your vehicle registration is cheap, how about your property tax? State income tax? Sales tax? Even "affordable" states have something that's over taxed compared to somewhere else.

    Nobody fucks like the government.

Yes, and agreed 100%,it's completely disgusting on how we all get porked.
They get you in or out the door.
Property tax here in MA. is 1.23% of assessed value, income is 5% and sales tax is 6.25 but not on "needs of living" such as clothing or food,(groceries).

But!my frigging excise tax whennI first bought my truck was a lovely $1,800...WTF:facepalm:

Mesquite looks better in pictures than in person, by a wide margin.

Solar Octane is the opposite. Hard to photograph well on that one.

You’re high, looks way better in person imo. Pictures don’t actually really show all the shades and how much glitter is in the paint, gotta see it in person to believe it.

I'm not high. Biased, maybe, but not high. I don't like the color. Brown is an awful color for vehicles, even if it's Root Beer brown.

Your pic below looks better than all of them I've seen in person, and I've seen a LOT of them.

In person they look dull, lacking depth, even in sun light. More like the pic below. It's shiny, but it's just brown. Nothing special to me.

Liking it or not is subjective, but I'm being objective in how they've appeared when I've seen them in person. Dealer I bought from had several. I drove one to test the softex seats out before committing to having them source a truck in a color I liked. It was clean and shiny, but very "meh" for a color.

Color is the most subjective characteristic there is.

There are some colors people drive a 1000 miles to get I would not take if you paid me to drive it.

For you our mesquite. For others it's the color you own.

That’s right! I remember you saying that now. You seen any others? I really haven’t seen a single one. I see Lunar Rock all the time. Wish it was a bit more of a rare color.

The only 2 I have seen in Metro Atlanta, west GA and East AL. Out of state tags on the I85. My hypothesis is Toyota allocated almost none to Southeastern Toyota.

When I bought it was Army Green, Mesquite and maybe Lunar rock for me. I wanted a different color so if it came down to black, white, gray, silver it was a no sale for me

I was originally going a 2nd Ram as I loved my 2015. But the small palette of exterior colors were drab on the Gen5 sheet metal as well as so many available being chip delete one offs.

Color preference is 100% subjective, but how it behaves/appears in lighting is objective.
