I think in that K you’re getting involved with the dealer a lot and dealers are not the brand so they probably will not be willing to lose anything just my two cents I guess

COVID. It will forever be their COVID vehicle. Every manufacturer has one by now.

But why do you think that they haven’t fixed it yet? It’s been. going on five years, you don’t think they would’ve updated the engine by now Or at least made a good fix for it you know

Does anyone know what Toyota considers an acceptable failure rate on an engine? Are they good with a 1% failure rate...2% does anyone know?

It's a great question. Even with the smallish percentage that we know about, this is more than Toyota ever wanted. Think about the T24A and it failing in the Land Cruiser & Tacoma.

I saw an article probably a year ago giving engine failure stats for most makers. Toyota was in the top tier with an average of 200-300 failures in 100k engines. That was across all engines produced. The worst makers were about 2x.

Premature engine failures are actually pretty rare regardless of maker these days. Not the old GM aluminum engine days in the 70s when it was 90%>.

So 1% failure would be below average for any maker and substantially worse for Toyota.

I think the recent VC engines recall for Nissan and 2.7 L for Ford are similiar with 1% failures to date. But they recalled all engines in a run.

But if a company recalls that many vehicles their analysis yields they found a real problem they can't solve easier. it's not just being nice

Toyota has agreed to replace 100,000 engines. I wonder how many have fully failed prior to getting the replacement, what the percentage of field failures is for this incident?

I can only speak for what I have seen and of the recall motors we have done, only 3 or 4 were vehicle off road(dead truck) the other 70 were fine

The new new trucks with the fancy bearings are the same as the crate engines. And yea they have been failing.

I fully suspect the owners are the beta testers and Toyota is constantly changing things and watching the outcomes along the way to decide what’s the best strategy to keep moving forward

I truly suspect some of these are also getting ecu reflash updates and Toyota is likely testing different values trims and what not. I still don’t think the engine is the issue, if I’m smart enough to figure it out the folks at Toyota certainly are. I think they’ve created an ecu tune that is so lean at part throttle and even in boost to meet the emissions standards which generates immense cylinder temps and pressure which cause an ever increasing Likelihood of LSPI (low speed pre ignition) and / or detonation. The reason they can’t come out and say that is because they can’t openly say
    “Our tune is too lean”
The first thing that will happen is a Volkswagen fiasco all over again. EPA starts jumping down their throat and forced Toyota to park a million trucks in the Mojave desert like Volkswagen. Toyota is replacing engines that fail from what appears to be poor tuning and knock which takes the rod and crank bearings out. My thoughts are they are keeping silent about any tuning issues due to the amount of money it costs for a buy back of a half million trucks rather than just 100,000 engines. The weight of the EPA on their back about not being able to meet emissions would be monumental. So replacing engines that fail may be the cheaper way out.

cue the guy who said about GM earlier in thread
“If the lawsuits cost $1,000,000 million but the fix costs $1,000,001 then GM will see you in court.

if these engine replacements cost $1.4b but trying to change the tuning to “fix” the real issue (detonation) gets them in hot water with the EPA and clean air act and emissions czars, they may be swallowing the engine replacements cause it’s cheaper.
