A short block is the block, crankshaft, pistons, rods, assembled. That is what is delivered.

It must be obvious at lease a short block is needed. You don’t have to do a complete tear down to come to that conclusion.

I’m assuming this is their plan… Although no one can answer my question about if it was shavings in the oil, are they proactively replacing the turbos/oil lines/etc or do we just wait until those fail… Apparently that answer may come from the other rep

A short block is a block assembled with crank, bearings, pistons etc in it; to which they will put on his old heads, (now a long block) intake, oil pan, etc.

Previous, similar repairs allow for parts to be ordered based on the symptom and interfacing with TAS, FTS, etc.

"certain machining debris may not have been cleared from the engine when it was produced." Doesn't say "in the oil," could be machining debris pinched between crankshaft bearing and cradle. Could be something else. I wouldn't assume anything. Toyota put out the bulletin and is paying for the fix, new engine.

And yet, said debris is in the oil because said debris was discovered in the oiling passages of a brand new short block.

    Thanks for the continued updates.

At what date is your lemon law applicable for this truck?

Perhaps I missed it but do you have the extended warranty as well? I only ask out of curiosity if having an extended warranty (even if it died within the standard warranty) rates you to have a long block. I think the answer is no but perhaps someone can confirm.

I don't think the extended warranty makes any difference on the scope of repairs.

Toyotas standard response for engine failures that fall outside of the recall has been only short block replacements. Which I personally think is borderline criminal. How can their warrantied repairs differ from the recall repairs for the exact same failure?

Toyota does not have long blocks to repair non-recall vehicles as I understand it. Every long block they produce is for the recall. If you are not in the recall, you do not get one of the long blocks being produced for the recall vehicles. Typically Toyota does not produce long blocks for repairs for any of their models, they produce short blocks, and the additional repair parts to be used as needed. As best I understand it.

Thanks. At this point I think I would be hoping for a lemon law case. Or, for Toyota to buy back your truck and get you into another one.

I would not be comfortable with a short block repair.

    Yes they do.

It's called a "Partial Engine Assembly" and it has been used in multiple local repairs. It does not include all the things that the Recall Engine Assembly does. Think of it as a block and heads and everything needs to join those things together. Electronics not included.

    19000-F4030 - Partial Engine Assembly (Non-Hybrid)
    - Original was 19000-F4020 and was superseded in January 2024)
19000-F4040 - Partial Engine Assembly (Hybrid, including Sequoia)
    - Original was 19000-F4010 and was superseded in January 2024)

Then I stand corrected. When do they use the long block vs the short block that literally everyone on here gets outside of the recall?

That is completely up to Toyota Corporate, but they have been used.

They have for sure been used for the failures that have happened in Toyota's own Corporate Fleet. All repairs done at Toyota of Plano.

"Speak softly and carry a big stick" a very wise man once said. It's all about what someone is willing to accept. Some folks will just let Toyota/dealer/etc. do whatever they want and as long as the vehicle runs and operates, they don't care what was done to it. Hell, some of these people don't ever even raise the hood on their own vehicle.

They also have some extras for those engines damage during shipping. Now some of those engines are lightly damage as maybe as simple as a new intake tube needed or maybe a bent oil cooler, but there are reports of damage engines bad enough for Toyota to send out another motor....

Definitely doesn’t alter the repair; extended warranty only comes into play after the initial is over.

To answer your question, I don’t have the extended warranty, I figured I would consider it as I approach 36k miles (which will probably be the 24 month mark) on whether I’m keeping it or not. I had my last Tundra for ~16 months (almost 50k miles though)

They very likely know the cause. And they have analyzed every solution option weighing cost vs reputation impact vs speed of making it a memory.

It's always a speed, cost, quality triangle for any business decision. Toyo is no different.

And they STILL won't tell you whether your engine spun a bearing or it was something else? That info should be easily accessible on a service write-up. I'd go straight to the service desk and ask for any write-ups attached to your VIN. Never heard of a dealer intentionally hiding this info from customers about their own vehicles.
