2024 hybrid supposedly starts at 59k, so if the engine costs 30k, that doesn't leave a lot for the rest of the truck. They'll say it costs 10k to replace transmission and 5k to replace infotainment system. That'll leave us few grand for the frame and the rest of metal and fabric underneath the skin.

Some of those prices toyota dealers are charging don't look entirely realistic. Makes me wonder about having a Toyota. Sure, if this truck is reliable that's fine, but the second a door knob breaks, you're out several thousand dollars:rofl:

I take my truck to the dealer for everything accept for that very first oil change.
And I don’t tow with the truck. It’s a bougie truck for me as I just drive it to work and home. I live 100 kms from my work so that is minimum 200 kms per day. I’d say I’m close to 300 kms a day after driving around for lunch and pleasure driving… etc.

This is concerning. I change my own oils, antifeezes, brake fluids and whatever else is simple maintenance. This sort of response from toyota makes me alarmed! You changed your own oil and now extended warranty is basically void?!

Where did you read this? What I read was that the 3rd-party extended warranty will replace the short block.

Post 49. Of course this was a warranty claim.

when you say “3rd party warranty”…this is not the Toyota warranty bought through a Toyota dealer correct?

this is another party outside of Toyota?

Recall engines are $12K and 20.4 hours of labor, but that is Warranty

Out of pocket if 3rd party warranty approves the job a tech might want like 30 hours to piece the short block or whatever they approve together and sometimes what the 3rd party warranty doesn't pay out comes out of the customers pocket. Seen it time and time again. Some 3rd party warranties are terrible and even want to use aftermarket parts. Just dealt with Endurance on it.

Yes. It’s not always the same bearing. Not even always a crankcase bearing. Multiple failures on the forum of rod bearings as well, although they are rarer.

What’s crazy to me is the lack of expansion on the recall window. I truly hate it for people like the OP whose engines fail for the same reason and just get a dealership rebuild. That’s a big range of trucks, too, even if they finally got it sorted in Nov ‘24.

Maybe this was a dealer provided third party warranty? Several Toyota dealers around here advertise "free lifetime powertrain warranty," but they are NOT Toyota warranties

This is why I dont hold ANY manuf on a pedestal, regardless of what they are currently doing for its customers. I have started to see a trend of manufs declining warranty repairs because of this issue. I do my own oil changes, dealers can fuck up a wet dream, so they aint touching my vehicle unless it's a warranty issue. With that said, I have started to keep receipts every time I buy the oil/filter or any fluids for my vehicle.

That does not include labor. This will not be an engine assembly swap. It will be a full rebuild. Short block, heads, turbos, etc.

You can not believe something and it still be true. You don't know everything that you think you do.

TMMTX is having to slow production of the non-Hybrid variant as they do not have enough engines due to the recall.

I will trust a gsm at one of the highest volume dealerships in the country over the trusted, evidence based periodical where obviously everyone goes to trust all things car related also known as pickuptrucktalk.com

LOL, do you even know who #NotRyan is?!?!?

I'll trust him over you or your beloved GSM "at the largest volume dealership in the country" blah, blah, blah....(because, you know, the more vehicles he sells, the smarter he must be, right? LOL). Even big dealerships can employ ignorant people.

Dude, I am not here to argue with you……keep flexing your keyboard muscles. I am giving real world information from someone who has been in the business for 30 years and doing it at a very high level. And has absolutely no reason to lie. Choose to believe it or not - doesn’t matter to me

it’s an exercise in futility to argue with someone who already knows everything…..I will ask him and get back to you.

I admitted that initially did not realize that we were talking about a hybrid engine which could change cost…..my point was regardless whoever quoted $32k as a replacement was quoting insurance costs. That’s not real world out of pocket costs…..nothing more and nothing less. My buddy’s point was that they would not use insurance costs to use as a jumping off point to negotiate discounts…….you seem to be stuck on this point. You can quote a $32k engine repair all you want but that’s NOT what would be charged to an out of warranty customer. Simply a moot point to push an agenda to argue.

That's precisely my question - what WOULD be the actual amount charged to an out-of-warranty customer? If not $32k, what is it? Have him quote a replacement and we will see. No insurance, no warranty, just straight customer pay.

A dude, here, hit a deer doing 45 mph. The grille, headlights, and radiators were destroyed, but no structural or engine damage. The hood wasn’t even damaged.

The repair estimate was $24k. His insurance totaled it. ‘23 Platinum with 55k miles, as I recall.

So why is anyone questioning $30k for an engine replacement?

    Make what normal?

The new normal, now, is a minor deer strike will total a $70K truck. 20 years ago it resulted in nothing but a minor dented bumper, if that.

You obviously don't realize that the sheet on pickuptrucktalk.com is representative of an actual receipt from a customer who had an engine rebuild under warranty. But you seem to think you know everything, so we'll leave you to it.
