When it’s on sale. Full price online is $39 for 10 quarts. It’s a buck cheaper in the warehouse.

Both Retired Toyota and Nissan Engine engineers said that no matter the oil (Syn or non-Syn) oil, in their vehicles, they change it every 3K miles. That is what I have done so far, using Pennzoil Ultra Platinum Full Synthetic. Some good insight on youtube from Car Care Nut channel and FordBossMe Channel.

Ted, Thanks again for sharing your lab info. Numbers are looking great and headed in the right direction. Just an fyi, the “Make Up Oil Added” field is the amount of oil you added (if any) since the last change because the engine was low. ie - your engine burns or leaks oil and you have to add some along the way to keep it full. Blackstone uses that amount in their calculations since contaminants would be diluted in more than the 7.7qts the engine usually holds. Looking forward to your future numbers. Thanks again.

I hit 5114 on the odometer yesterday, and was at a crossroads of what to do. I'm a 7/23 build date. I decided to run it to Toyota and have them change the oil. Worth the money for hopefully peace of mind. This 10K interval seems nuts to me. However that's an opinion from old man, not anything scientific. I used to race a Mitsubishi Starion on the strip, and found that the more fluid changes on the engine, the turbo would last longer between rebuilds. Used to even have to change out a turbo oil feed pipe more often than even Mitsubishi suggested on their maintenance schedule. Back then we used to add turbo timers to keep the car running idle after you turned the key off to let everything cool down after hot runs. I guess I'll see if the peace of mind changes actually provide anything down the road.

I have a 24 with an 8/23 build. I will do the same as you. The older I have gotten the more I value peace of mind. :)

With a twin turbo and 0w-20. I’d change it sooner especially if you tow or run it hard. I’ve been doing it every 5-7k intervals since new. FYI the diff takes close to 5 quarts if you ever change it.

I had a 2010 Tundra and changed the oil every 5000 Kms. I did the same with my new 23 rather than waiting for the recommended 8000. I am on a trip in the US and when it hit the 8000 mark I contacted a US dealer to have its 1st service done (I wanted to have it done because it is covered free of charge by the dealer — or at least that is what the dealer told me in Canada). When I brought it in all they did was rotate the tires and told me the recommended oil change interval was 10,000 miles! I thought 8000kms was too long but that is like 16,000kms between changes. To me oil is way cheaper than an engine job. I also don’t understand the difference in recommended maintenance between Can/US for the same truck.

PS. I always use Mobile-1 full synthetic. Not sure what brand the dealer will use and now I am not sure I want to let them touch it either.

I changed the original oil at 2K mi prior to a 3K mi trip. The oil was pretty dark but for initial break in it was expected. Just changed it again at 6K mi, another big trip coming, and again it was pretty dark with only 4K mi on the oil. No heavy loading or towing. I’m sure break-in is still in play. I’ve had clearer oil with 7500mi on it from my Tacoma (thought it was fully broke in) I sent a sample off to Blackstone today from this one.
*UPDATE - Sample Recd. Happy with results. (Couldn’t add here as an edit. Added further down)

I changed my oil at 5K and had to argue with the Service guy. He said, “fine, if you want to be wasteful then we will do it”. I said, “It’s $49.95 with a coupon”. That’s worth extending the life of my truck.

I don’t get why you have to argue to spend money with these people on a $65K+ investment.

Oem tonneau, side steps, spray in liner. Trd skidplate.

When did a depreciating asset become an investment? Change your oil whenever you want but a vehicle is not an investment. I will stick with the maintenance guidelines Toyota stipulates, I am sure the engineers are smarter than me .

For me, it’s 5k, takes me 20 minutes and gives me the nostalgia of being 10 years old again, changing the oil on my dads 1987 f-150 while he smoked a cigarette and drank beer, carefully supervising.

the dealership can take their oil changes and shove them right up their you know what.

Very informative. Thx or sharing. The Additive Package chemistry is way over my pay grade but a lot made common sense. Interesting to learn OEM oil is from Exxon Mobil

If they were really making money doing oil changes, they would have to charge double or triple that amount. I think most places do losses on oil or try to break even. This is where the $75 cabin filters come in, upsell, and so on. A small garage with a $100+ oil change is probably going to be a little more upfront and charge the rates they need to charge to keep the doors open and the lights on.

according to the guy in the video above…gotta keep the leased vehicle somewhat functioning to get it thru the warranty period…hence free and/or long interval 10k (lol) oil changes

I had to do the same with a 2021 Toyota Sienna. I remember the older 2nd Gen prius had issues with an inferior head gasket issue at high mileage that would be eliminated or postponed longer with 5k mile oil changes. Those that did the 10k interval had the issue show up sooner, like lower 100k miles range.

I had to force the service advisor to do it. It was a free one. I guess they want the repairs later or want you to trade it in if problems show up after warranty.

I was a by the book guy until I bought 2 Ecoboost Fords. The F150 forums were full of examples of issues with their 10k interval and others with high mileage and no issue simply by changing the oil sooner. The oil being used to cool the turbos was my main reason to go against my nature and do oil changes more often. NA motor like this ancient one in my 2018 Tundra will be done later like 7,500 miles depending on how it looks when I check it.

Another interesting video discussing Start/Stop having a positive effect on oil oxidation. I’m curious, never heard of Speediagnostix Lab. Blackstone has been around a long time and I’m very familiar with them. Anyone have Pros/Cons of one over the other?

The wear and tear on the engine and the starter/battery probably isn’t worth it. Change the oil every 5k and have the auto stop start disabled. You’ll get best of both worlds

The sump holds almost 8 quarts of oil.

    The turbos are water cooled.

    10k OCIs work for me.

My first Blackstone Labs report @ 5725mi. First change was at 2K mi but I didn’t sample that one.

My research found these turbos are still oil cooled like all others but this new block has water cooling jackets around the exhaust ports ahead of the turbos cooling the exhaust flow headed in.

Glad we can all agree the 10k oci is not optimal.

    :boink:

Y'all remind me of my buddy who insisted on a fresh sump of Royal Purple every 3K in his diesel 6.2L F250  There's keeping up on maintenance - and then there's just wasting money.

If Toyota's engineers specify 10K then I'm going to take that as acceptable - and I will run shorter intervals for severe duty like dirt, towing etc. There's almost 8 quarts of full synthetic in the sump and there is no reason to dump it before it shears out of spec as long as the filter is doing its job.

FWIW I had my first OC ~7K and didn't bother with an analysis. I'll take a sample at the next OC, probably around 15K, and share with the collective. If shorter OCIs are indicated by the science, well then I'll eat my hat. Or my mask...

Have you seen the oil analysis reports showing 2% fuel dilution in 1500 miles?
