Do those labs help you determine an OCI? I thought they just gave you the date and you did with it what you want?

I believe Blackstone does. A friend uses them for his Cessna182 and another for his motorcycle. After a few tests they develop a health history on your motor which is compared to a baseline from their records for the same motor. I’m going to try them out after break in.

Curious, why do you recommend the long nipple version?

I used the short version on my prior Tacoma and now about to buy a valve for the Tundra. Thanks for the help

They do. This one is out of one of the engines in my boat with the history. I started at 100hrs worked up to 140hrs on this test and ultimately ended up at 200hrs. Oil changes are $4K so you watch the science pretty closely. Full report is on the PDF.

Seeing that you're Canadian as well; I'll tell you what I've done for my Tacoma and now my TRD Pro Tundra.

I wait until Canadian Tire has 0W20 on sale for $35 for a 5L jug. Toyota's oil is actually made by Mobil 1, so if you want to save a few dollars buy that from CT. I personally prefer Pennzoil Platinum Ultra (check out Bobistheoilguy) due to it having some of the best UOAs out of any oil in the price range.

In regards to oil filters I have a discount at a dealership; if you buy a case at a time (10) they usually cut you a discount.

I changed my oil for the first time at 2000 km and will do it again right around 12000 km or 6000 miles.

I’m not currently in the correct economic bracket to contemplate what a full round of oil, oil filters, fuel filters, water separation filters etc costs if it all has to be done at once. You alluded to some obscene costs for an OCI, no doubt a huge amount of oil, filters that aren’t cheap, and from the looks of the engine room some $$$ in labor too.

40 gallons of Mobil 1. Lots of fuel and oil filters. 4 air filters and the genset. Seatrial against the baselines. Blackstone on the 2 mains, transmissions and genset. I'm a good Blackstone customer.

Back on topic though, I don't do that much analysis on my cars. I change air filters at about 1/2 the recommended time, always use synthetic and change it at 5-10K miles depending on use. On big diesels with raw water cooling the analysis is critical for not only what your OCI should be but preemptive to look for salt water, fuel or bearing material in the oil. There are steps you can take if you see indicators in advance.

I'm not sure what Toyota would do if you took a Blackstone report to them? I doubt they'd act on it.

Depends on your relationship with the dealer. I've taken a couple of reports to my dealer back when I had my Corolla - 10 years ago, that showed elevated levels of coolant in the oil. Ended up getting a teardown under warranty and finding an issue with the water pump housing that wouldn't have been found until it failed.

Interesting on the diesels in your boat using salt water for cooling. I was under the impression that there was usually a fresh water/salt water heat exchanger to keep the saltwater out of the engines completely.

In my industry we use strait fresh water for coolant in medium speed diesels, with a corrosion inhibitor added. Unfortunately the current industry wide obsession with lowering operating ratios has resulted in far too much deferred maintenance. We can report problems but the powers that be don’t seem to care. Kind of sad, and part of the reason our side of the supply chain is still all sorts of dicked up. The RR’s want to use COVID as an excuse for their piss poor service, claiming the pandemic caused their staffing issues, lack of motive power, poorly maintained track, and shortage of maintained rolling stock. Yet all of us in the operating side of the house have observed this idiocy going on since 2015.

Kudos to you for maintaining your equipment to a high standard. Take care of your equipment and tools, and they’ll take care of you.

That looks like it would be a nightmare to try and track down a pinhole leak.

Just did the second oil change on this truck after the first one was done at the dealer. I did it in my driveway at about 10,000 miles and will do it every 5,000.
I do have to say, this is the cleanest oil change I have ever done on a vehicle! The drain plug is out in the open and the catch basin under the filter is great. No mess anywhere, Easy and slick. Pun intended.

Could you get to the filter with a strap wrench or is it recessed enough that you need a cap wrench? Thanks.

I used the channel-lock style that you clamp down with. A strap stele would work. Lots of room. I do recommend taking off the skid plate. The 1 minute it takes to remove the 4 12mm bolts was worth it.

Are there any online toyota dealers to buy oil and filters from? I've used sparkstoyota before but seems alittle harder to find the motor oil online at there web site.
I looked on Amazon and see a case of toyota 0w20 for 100.00 but then turn on Prime and it goes to 108.00???
Thanks for any help as search wasn't helpfull

I have all 3 and the channel lock style seems to be the easiest on this truck.

I would also be very wary of Amazon. Fake oil filters are known to be there. Not sure I would trust the oil either if looking for GTMO especially if the price is too good to be true.

Plenty of room and clearance and the drain tube stays on better.

did my beak-in oil / filter change yeserday at 1700 miles. Had the expected dark look. Will see what it looks like at 5K. One thing I will say is the air damn which sits underneath the two front 12mm bolts that have to be removed is a real PIA. I'd think the Mothership would have put access holes through it so the bolts could be easily accessed. Guess they all have tiny monkey hands. I'm gonna modify mine with a hole saw at each of the two bolt locations so I can reach them with the 12mm socket on my rachet extender.

You can put the front air dam in service mode. After turning off your vehicle, within 45 seconds, hold the wiper stalk up for 2 seconds or more (listen for it to deploy)
