Holy cow. This poor guy. Let me guess, SHE A gets the full zoot SUV with all of the toys while HE is expected to have a cheap used minivan. Poor bastard.

I love the "pay cash for everything" mantra and definitely subscribe to it, but I must be doing something wrong since I don't have $70k laying around to buy a truck. I'm like @nodak67 with a "reasonable" payment (one that I can live with) at the "bargain" rate of 4.73%. I have top tier credit and I'm used to 0% rates for a car note, this year has definitely been a culture shock. FTR, Toyota FS wanted 8.99% APR, I laughed at that and the F&I guy didn't argue with me bringing my own financing.

I don't know how folks sleep at night with $1k/month + CAR payments. I sure couldn't!!!!

My 23 Platinum was 4.1k under MSRP. Bought in Toyota of Denton around the 1st week of April.

But the MSRP had like 4k worth of Port Installed Options. They are basically just throwing in things like Console safe, bed extender, bedliner, dash cam, vehicle paint protection etc for free.

At this rate I probably will pay cash for my next truck. Problem is if you put a pile of cash totaling $70K on a table and put a new truck next to it and told me to pick one… I will take cash every single time.

I could spend $70K on a vehicle, if I needed it for some specific purpose (vocational), had an army of kids or people to haul and needed a 7 seater SUV, or needed to tow a big heavy ass trailer. Wrapping my head around a $70K 1/2 ton is a tough one as we’ve discussed before.

Hell I could willingly spend $70K on something cool and fun to drive. Trucks aren’t particularly fun to drive though, and the longer I delay buying the more money I accumulate. At some point I might elect to buy a 3/4 ton for no other reason than having big power and no worries about payload or towing. I have vendor discounts with the Big 3, and on most 3/4 tons that shaves $5,000 off the price on top of any other incentives etc. For me it narrows the gap between a 1/2 ton Toyota and a 3/4 ton domestic quite a bit.

Not sure what direction I will go. I might just refurbish my 2007 as much as possible and see if I can put another 150,000 miles on it. That’s how disgusted I am with the current automotive market.

In other disgusting news the Ford F350 is now ranked as the vehicle most likely to last beyond 250,000 miles. What in the hell is the world coming to?

Something else that has been bothering me is that I need a crew cab with plenty of space now, but I do not want a short bed. This week I’ve been on vacation, didn’t travel, I’ve been doing chores. Hauling stuff to the dump, hauling furniture, hauling river rock for landscaping, and I’m not done since I need to make another dump run. The 6.5’ bed on my old Double Cab has come in fairly handy, and I sure as hell don’t want a smaller bed.

If I’m going to buy a truck so long it effectively will not fit in my garage, I might as well buy one that can tow and haul a bunch of shit.

They appear to be coming back. Specialty vehicles are excluded, but they usually were before COVID too.

Now getting dealers to honor vendor pricing is another matter. Give it more time and I expect dealers will want to move iron and will start honoring vendor pricing.

I’m looking at an SR Crewmax 4x4. $2146 under MSRP with a $260 dealer doc fee. Buy or hold for another $500 or so off? With rates as they are and incentives from the big three likely to grow bigger I could see some incentives coming from Toyota soon. Thoughts?

Tundra is up 53% YoY. Ford up 20%ish YoY.
Ford supply is catching up so discounts off MSRP of 8% can be had. Local dealer here has 50 F150's on the lot
Toyota has more success than anticipated ( up strong for calendar 2022 when most were flat or down) with the GEN 3 so they are still catching up. local dealer has none available.
I got about $4K off on a 1794 I ordered. It has none of the protection options but I have to go 2 states from here to get it.

$2K off seems decent if it's local.

Pretty sure nobody ever thought the Tundra was going to be competitive with HD truck payload and tow ratings. Now, you're not wrong that they aren't leading in the 1/2 tons either, but they are within a few hundred pounds.

I paid MSRP for a hybrid TRDOR packed 23 but sold a Gen 2Raptor with 51k miles for over $51k which gave me a huge down on the new Tundra. I love the new Tundra and plan to keep it a long while.

Here's some of the sales data. F150 inventory is starting to stack up so deals there with more to follow I'm sure. The surprise to me is RAM. Sales down and I'm seeing discounts of 10% off MSRP for openers. Previoius Gen Tundra had languished so the Gen 3 is coming off weak comparables but a strong performance which makes supply a challenge. Discounts tight but that could change as the economy slows. Toyota probably last to discount.

I have noticed a lot of Raptor F150 stacking up with dealers, either people dumping them or the demand for 80-90k pickups is down in general. Ford is making Raptor broncos and rangers now so teh Raptor name doesn't quite mean as much as it once did. Toyota has an inherent built up demand from customers so they aren't making build to orders, toyota is building models and they are being snatched up as they roll out of the factory.

Agree on the Raptors going from they don't have them to "what color do you want?".
Here's some supply information from the end of Q1 which is the most current. Pretty astounding that the largest automaker has the lowest supply level. Tundra is off to a very good start. Based on supply, others are going to have better deals than Toyota.

More data. % of cars selling below MSRP up 60% since December. Time to start laughing at the dealers that said they’d never sell below MSRP again.

    Hello
Been lurking for a while as I've owned Tundras in the past. Also many F 150's. In the market again and found a 23 CM SR5 4WD. Stopped at local dealer to see what they had and manager offered 5k off any in stock unit. Problem is it has 5500 in Gulf states adds and 1500 dealer adds. Total sticker is 60k. Doc fee 549. It has convenience package from factory, TSS, safe, bed step, tailgate insert from GST, tint door edge guards ect from dealer. I was originally just looking at 2WD DC SR's in the 40k range. I think I might get them to do a little better if I am there and ready to buy. Just wondering what some of you think.

Yeah I know those add on's are just inflated profit. Best I found on SR is 1-2k off with no adds outside GST region but they sell pretty quick. Not in a hurry so will find a better deal. Thanks

Anything in the gulf states toyota region is going to have add ons, they make more money than any other distributor network. They were the first toyota distributor in the states way back in 1969. If you want a base bare bones model then I would hit up Autotrader for your area, I'm sure you will find one.

NARRATOR: "And this, kids, was how car negotiations were done pre-2019, with much success."

Good luck with that approach in the 2020s. The salesman will look over your shoulder or through you as if you didn't exist and greet the next guy while you are still talking.

I laughed at $16k over sticker last summer but that truck sold in a matter of days. My offer of MSRP was flat rejected. In March when I bought mine at MSRP (what a PRIVILEGE that was!) there was a shipment of trucks that came in and all were spoken for except 2, those had $5k markups and were also gone within hours.

Good luck with that strategy! It may work again in the future as interest rates and pricing continue their upward climb and demand drops, and I sure hope it does! But for now...

I think we might see msrp go up more, but also coupled with a "bigger" dealer discount and/or toyota keep-it-wild savings.

It will depend on the trim for sure. I don't think the higher trims will be discounted.

I bought my truck from a member of this forum. He's a sales manager at a Toyota in PA and the deal was pretty good.
2k under msrp. Only downside was that it was a 7 hour drive to get there.
Plus side was driving a nice new truck on the way back, enjoyed the Troegs Brewery and stayed overnight at Hershey Hotel.

So I got a new truck and a mini weekend vacation. Point is, if the local dealers don't want to budge then expand that search area and see what's around.

Don’t EVER tell a car salesman what you want to pay per month, under any circumstances.

I’ll say it. Doesn’t change anything for me. I know how to calculate a payment for a sales price. So I’m not worried. But if you’re average Joe car buyer I wouldn’t
