Three kids here, sold wife's Volvo XC60 and got her a 22 Sequoia TRD PRO. I actually like driving in back, so that I'm not constantly triggered by her driving style. With me in the back it's really like driving with 4 kids. Plenty of space. Without captain chairs in the second row it would be enough good space for 5 children.

For cargo we've got a Yakima EXO hitch system and 2x 10 cu.ft boxes and Timbren SES kit. I've had a 16 cu.ft roof box, never liked it, especially on such a tall vehicle.

The plan is to take us up north, to Canadian nowhere. Reliability was a corner stone when we were deciding on a large SUV. Replacing VVT in a luxury vehicle one month past the warranty was not fun.

Old TRD PRO Sequoia is just awesome.

I found a clean 21 Sequoia Sport with low miles which was priced well. Checked it out and it had a cam tower leak, so could've gotten more off. I pushed that one hard. Really wanted both platforms to be the same but she rejected. And there was still the trunk space issue.

    However, your setup sounds great.

Only a 30 mile commute one way here but I've been taking my manual Kia Forte Koup mostly to keep the miles off my truck (and because it gets double the fuel economy even when I thrash it). But my plan is to sell it and keep the wife's Corolla. 3 vehicles is the max I'm willing to maintain plus we really only have parking for 2 since the truck doesn't fit in the garage.

Those prices are in CAD, by the way. But yeah, it's silly right now.

For "space-space" we have my DC Tundra with 6.5' bed and cap. We still take it when our friends fly in for snow in New England, and we have to bring all the supplies enough for 6 kids and 4 adults for ~week. DC is a bit tight for 5, but 4-6 hours is ok.

Our garage is non-existent.... (it is currently called storage, lol) I was looking at either a new V6 Camry or a small/mid size SUV just for weather-proof. But with the current car market, I can wait. Just passed 18,000 miles on the Tundra and it is under two years (July this year).... so I am good there.

    Ahh yea forgot about that!

What’re folks opinions on the 3.0 baby Duramax? @JRS I noticed that wasn’t in your criteria/options, any reason you wanted to stay away?

I'm personally avoiding the 3.0 because the maintenance is typically more on a diesel, the fuel is higher (checked the difference between mileage on both gas n diesel motors....i'd spend about $50-$60 more per week), and I didn't like that you have to change the timing chain at 100k. About a $5-7000 job I think I read. I keep my vehicles over 100k miles typically.

    3.0 Duramax is insane https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2019/MC-10165111-9999.pdf

    7 coolant temperature sensors.
Electronically controlled thermostat that redirects coolant flow as computer wishes.
Belt-driven oil pump that can't be accessed w/o dropping the transmission.
8 electronically active items (sensors, valves, gates) in exhaust system.
DPF is very close to engine, heating up everything in engine compartment.

So many mechanical wear points and software bugs possibilities in this engine...

    Yeah, quite a few actually.
    • The Tundra will remain the primary tow/haul vehicle. So the 'diesels tow better' doesn't apply for us. We may use the Burb to pull the boat or tractor here and there, but the bulk will still be done with the truck and our loads aren't that heavy.
    • The 3.0 has a belt driven oil pump. Can't remember if it was 70k or 100k intervals, but to access, you've gotta drop the trans. Seems like a bad idea.
    • The cost/gallon vs miles/gallon becomes a wash, or maybe even a loss, as @Fotnot mentioned.
    • This is my wife's, and she's not the best at letting the car warm up...
    • Availability of diesel is less than gasoline. Not to the point that it'd probably be an actual issue, but every po-dunk town will still have gas.
    • This one's dumb, but diesel stinks, especially if it gets on you.

And this is why I ask those questions.. :fistbump:

With GM’s history of things going relatively south sub 100k miles, that’s not really a game I want to play. I hadn’t done a ton of research on the internals of it yet, but just reading that bulletin is enough to keep me away from it (along with @Fotnot ’s point as well).

And isn't the timing chain at the back of the engine or something like that?

ETA: Per the posts above, maybe it's the oil pump I was thinking of.

Because of what we went through with our Suburban and Yukon XL, this recent purchase boiled down to two options:

    1. room to spare with likely issues,
    vs
    2. a little less space and no likely issues.

We were sick of all the issues that came with driving a full size GM product, so we chose to stick with Toyota/Lexus and sacrifice a little bit of space. A rooftop box will solve that if needed, but we’ve just been packing lighter instead.

Our problems with a Suburban and Yukon XL:
    • constant electrical/wiring issues culminating in several trips to a local mechanic (finally found that the insulation on the harness had rubbed clean off due to contact with the steering column)
    • rear diff grenaded without warning
    • engine dying randomly making right turns from a stop (see first issue above)
    • hard/erratic shifts
    • repeated limp mode, usually due to P0307 (misfire in cylinder 7 due to AFM)
    • heater core hose blowing on the highway
    • loud interior rattles
    • motor mounts
    • complete electrical system freak-outs with still no known cause that would come and go on their own

I’m not including water pumps, alternators, suspension, brakes, etc. Plus, they were stupidly difficult to maintain. To drop the transmission pan, you had to loosen a few exhaust pipe hangers and use a ratchet strap to pull it just far enough out of the way.

I will take my “more complicated” oil filter and the possibility of my cam towers being slightly wet with oil ANY DAY.
Agreed. The new Sequoia has made me realize what a truly overlooked gem the 2nd gen Sequoia is.

@Terndrerrr, I'm not sitting here advocating that the GM was mechanically a better decision... Hell, my wife is the one who pushed new over used for the better warranty options knowing we will have problems.

If you reread, I didn't say the cam tower leak was a deterrent. To me it was advantageous as I could get the vehicle for less. My truck even has the leak (which I'll be getting to this summer along with the bad valve cover gaskets). But I've said it a few times now, you can't fit 200+lbs of dog in a Sequoia/GX trunk or on the roof. When we leave for long weekend trips, I'll already be needing to use the hitch rack and likely put a rooftop carrier on.

With only two car seats, the truck worked great for those types of trips. Gear and dogs in bed, humans in cab. Had Toyota made a long Sequoia and kept the 5.7, she'd own that hands down.

Keep up with the oil change, disable the fuel management system, and report to dealer right away demanding trans fluid service if you ever experience any harsh shift. With all that, combine with a little bit of luck, this chev will serve you wonderfully. - from a gm parts guy

That post wasn't aimed at you. Just adding more info to the thread from someone who went the opposite direction (Suburban-sized GM for ~10 years to 3-row Toyota). I would absolutely do the same thing you did and use a cam tower leak to try to get a sales price down a bit even though it doesn't bother me much. Vanishingly few of them truly require any attention, but when they do...$$$. I'd just keep an eye on it.

We have one dog. Will likely get another. For now, the Tundra is the default adventure trip mobile. 65lb dog rides on the floor of the second row. Our three kids are young enough that this isn't a problem. When they get older, she'll probably go in the bed in a kennel. This would be the excuse I need to get a nice ARE cap. :D

If for some reason we had to take the LX on these adventure trips, no big deal; we'd just put the kids 3 across in the 2nd row and fold the 3rd row up for the dog(s). Any gear that didn't fit with us would go in a hitch carrier. But the Tundra works so much better for gear-laden adventure trips. When family comes to town or we take the kids' friends somewhere fun, the LX seats 8 no problem.

I truly hope your Suburan ownership is better than ours was. I can think of at least 5 times I had to rescue my wife and kids from the side of a highway or a parking lot in 10 years.

Lol you’re in the same boat as me except I got the wife an lx570 and I’m waiting on my f350 to show up. Instead of space I needed to be able to tow stuff. Not looking forward to moving away from my 2.5 gen tundra. In fact my wife told me to keep it and use it at the ranch so I don’t screw up the new ford and we can get rid of our old 2003 f250. Basically just tow with the new f350 when needed.

If I needed to tow more than a boat or midsized trailer, I’d begrudgingly move on from my Tundra, too.

    OR…

Tundra daily driver hunting adventure mobile with a diesel hauler when needed? Lol, the gas bill!! Mine is already pretty hefty with two 5.7s.

That was what I could infer from some Chevy forums. Do you have a preferred AFM disable method? Anything better than OBD dongle?

I used the Range AFM Disabler. It wasn’t a dongle; just a plug. It worked for the few years I had it. Paid $175 online. Sold it with the YXL.

Yes. We have friends whose dad's brand new 6.2 Escalade dumped its lifters in their driveway.

    Buying the Range dongle/plug now.

I wanted an extra vehicle and was looking at K5 Blazers (need 4x4) and the prices were CRAZY, so bought a 1999 Tahoe-POS- why oh why didn't I purchase an old Land Cruiser! Have a Tundra and Lexus LX470-bullet proof vehicles and regret the purchase of the Tahoe Big Time!
