I am not and have never been in the automotive industry, nor did I watch the video, but based off the picture if it was coming this fall wouldn’t they *have* to release something soon to dealers? We’d be about 6-8 months away. You’d think Toyota would have to educate and inform the salesmen (although we all know how knowledgeable salesmen actually are). But the bigger issue is the techs would need to know how to diagnose and repair a “new platform” with a new engine and transmission.

I don’t blame Toyota for not releasing info until it’s ready. Just look at other stuff. A movie trailer comes out and people get excited. Then those same people get mad if it’s delayed. We have a ways to go until 2022, but I’d guess info release to trucks shipping would be at least 6 months? Longer we go without info has me pessimistic.

I’m excited for a refresh, but won’t be getting a new truck til my 7 yr / 100,000 mile warranty is up. And I’m about 50/50 on another tundra depending on payload.

Same dilema I'm in on my 2016. 100,000 warranty but then the dealer lifetime Powertrain warranty kicks. I'm only at 53,000 miles.

I'm in the same boat on the payload thing. I want a nice interior (like my Platinum) and at least 2000lbs of payload, probably not going to happen with any of the 1/2 tons anytime soon though. I wish Ford (and Toyota) would offer a heavy duty payload package on the nicer trim levels. Ford limits the HDPP to the trucks with the very basic interiors and it drives me nuts cause I don't want a 3/4 or 1 ton for my daily. Also the (lack of) quality and reliability of a Ford or Ram would keep me up at night.

That hasn’t been true for a long time. Tundra comes the closest. My crewmax with the huge tank is still more than a half ton...

Dealer information is being released this week along with the virtual NADA show.

The vehicle program itself is ready.

The top rated payload will be around 2100lbs.

ya cant see that, it was posted before you need a login

anyways, if that 2100 lbs is right and thats for the 4x4 platinum crewmax then I think that will make a lot of people happy.

however if its for the single cab long bed and the crewmax is way lower like 1300-1500, then I would bet some people will defect to other 1/2 tons who need or want more

I sure hope we get some details soon, my attention is being pulled to that f-150 lariat with 7.2 Kw generator

People are interesting. Want to buy a 1/2 ton truck but are upset because the payload is not even 3/4 ton. What was Toyota thinking when they built their 1/2 ton trucks.

Yep. On another note, I'd love to see what Toyota would come up with for 3/4-ton Tundra.

I read: "maximum payload of 1,730 pounds." That's in keeping with the 1/2 ton LD niche the Tundra is in. Would be great to see them offer a 3/4 HD model.

It would take something very special to pry my PRO out of my hands. Twin Turbo V6 & Hybrid is not it........... Unless of course Gas goes over $5 a gallon ;-)

1730lbs is current max payload rating on the 3rd gen, the switch to 6 lugs helps to increase load, the hubs I believe are the same as well as front half shafts, but as an example is Ram 1500 4th and 5th gen, they both use same front hubs but the 4th gen used 5 lugs while 5th gen used 6 lugs, 4th gen had 1880lb max payload while 5th gen has 2008lb max payload, there's oblivious more math to it but most of them show that max payload will be in the 2100lbs range on the new Tundra.

I also love my truck, I don't need to win all the drag races, the v8 sound makes me smile enough.

Max payload on my 2020 4WD CrewMax shows 1,185 lbs. Wish it were more but, truth be told, I am not even close to that number yet.

Can't speak to the front half shafts, but IMO, the brakes, bearings/carriers/hubs, differentials on the Tundra are all overbuilt and would likely require very little if anything to go 3/4 ton. All indications point to suspension and possibly frame as the weak points. I think the 'design' of the frame is in keeping with the 3/4 1 ton open C in the bed sections, but I think the thickness of the metal and other bracing would have to be upgraded to go 3/4 or 1 ton. I'm really interested to see what they do, and how they leapfrog the big 3.

The HD market has exploded since 2007, and they should exploit that in this new model. HD was obviously a thing when they developed the current generation, but wasn't anywhere near as big of a deal. If they are smart, they engineered and designed the new V6 powertrain in a way that would allow them to keep the 5.7 as an easy option. That's what I would have done, and added the DI and other upgrades they already developed for its use in Lexus. CHOICE is a big thing for full size trucks, and frankly, I DONT think tons of loyal Tundra owners are going to jump for a TV6/Hybrid.... I know I'm NOT...... Now drop a V-8 Option? That would be hard to refuse.

But what do I know, I am a ONE TIME Toyota and Tundra buyer.............

It depends. For me, as long as I can get the same (or better) power *and* reliability long-term, I'd be fine with it.

But 'long-term' is the key. I bought my current Tundra with the intention of keeping it for a GOOD long time; and in general, I'm not so sure a TT will hold up over 10-15 years.

And for those of you who doubt I may hold onto it that long....we also own a 2004 F150 4.6L that my mom and I trade off using as an errand runner. 280K and has had very little done to it (though it rattles like crazy).

You’re right. I should be happy I have 1220 lbs payload, 220 lbs over a 1/2 ton. Minus 80 lb or so for mods I think, that sticker fell off. I shouldn’t hope for at least 1300 lbs, much less 1700-2000 lbs which it seems like others are moving towards.

I know everyone is saying it’s the TTV6. I can’t shake the feeling that a TTV6 can’t be it. How does that do any more than catch Toyota up to Ford?

The Lexus TTV8 with a hybrid drive would get everyone’s blood pumping. 500HP, torque to match, upper 20s fuel economy, V8 sound and smiles. I could see lots of domestic drivers jumping over to Toyota for that. And keeping a V8 keeps a lot of current Tundra drivers from jumping ship to one of the domestics.

Seems like it’s a no-brainer to me. But all the talk is about a TTV6, so what do I know? Unless the hybrid changes things dramatically or Toyota has something up its sleeve to bring the performance of that motor well beyond what it’s currently capable of, I don’t see how that’s a “world beater” or how it changes the whole game the way Toyota did in 2007.

Seems like Ford was forced into smaller engines with turbos by the government's fuel economy rules. The way I understand it is they require an average mpg across the fleet, so a company like Ford had no choice but to radically redesign their drivetrain because the bulk of their fleet are these trucks. Toyota can meet these requirements and never touch the Tundra, it makes up such a small percentage of their fleet. At least that's what I'm holding onto...a little hope...

I drove the Lariat with the Powerboost a week ago. Great interior, but did not like the ride as much as the Tundra, somehow the 6 speed is smoother through the gears than the Ford. When I hit it just a little bit... TURBO LAG! It did have about 300 lbs more payload than my Tundra, but weighs about 600 lbs less and takes premium fuel. The notion that you can build a full size truck to to get good mpgs, good range when towing, is still a fallacy.

Love the AT4, drove in the 6.2L and it is smooth and powerful, but the inside looks more dated than my 2018 Tundra (not a big deal to me), but it takes premium fuel and to me that is a big deal. The Duramax AT4 definitely shows it's low end torque, but it still sounds like a diesel inside and out, it would drive me nuts as a daily driver, and so would the "check engine light" problems people are having with them.

My solution...just paint my tow hooks red like the AT4.7PHJVCUKQQylsza47Xu5lw.jpg

those are the rigs on my short list as well, later this year gm is supposed to be completely upgrading the interiors so I have that AT 4 6.2 on my list as well.

im going to drive that Ford as well when the time comes as well as the tundra for sure

Seeing as how my tundra didn’t start and it took a week to fix it and I was stuffed in a shitty taco, I’m not really worried about reliability as much at the moment , that’s only part of the equation for me.
