Its crazy all these dealers trying to pre-sell their allocations with no MSRP and really no info at all....not to mention no on road reviews that were not heavily directed by Toyota.

They may be able to build cars and trucks well, but the rest of their team seems to be a bunch of amateur's. The may need to take some of the extra profit from this year and invest in a bit better marketing and product info team.

I've owned 3 Taco's with the composite bed with a bed mat and loved the setup. It's great because the mat keeps things for sliding but when you need to clean out the bed you can just pull the mat out and spray the bed out super easy and quick.

Couldn't agree more. I'm excited for my 22 but there is no reason dealers should be calling about vehicles that don't have a price yet.

Exactly this. I like the composite with bed mat since it gives you options. For instance I was moving a couch the other day in the Tacoma and took out the bed mat so that I could easily slide the couch in and out. With a bed mat it would have really been to grippy too move. I'd rather have the mat since you can take it on and off whereas it seems like a spray-in liner over the composite is a permanent solution.

If I had a dollar for every time they said "it's a good truck, buuuuuut......." I'd be eating lunch for free.

Basically it sounded like they didn't want to criticize it but the new design doesn't have a single differentiating feature. They almost made it sound like it's in truck purgatory. Not good, not bad, just blah. They said it still falls behind the American trucks. I thought I heard them say they even thought the old GM interior was better than the new Tundra. They said there was nothing wrong with the old 5.7 other than the gas mileage, and they effectively replaced it with a car engine. They said it falls behind the other three in all metrics, and they're not sure who's buying one.

Sure, but that's just one person's opinion. Why knock it until you've seen pricing and test driven one?

You lost me when you mentioned the bit about GM interiors. That right there tells me I don't need to listen to them at all.

Everything that you said that they said sounds like everything that everyone has been saying. I agree the truck, which was already in 4th place for looks is now uglier (but that is subjective and the longer it's around, the more it will slowly grow on people). I agree they only played catch-up. Once again the only advantage Toyota will have in this market segment is reliability (hopefully) but that's a biggie. I plan on buying one provided they will discount them appropriately. The "people" willing to pay over sticker will probably keep that from happening until things return to normal.

Toyota will get exactly what it wants out of this: a respectable presence but not domination. Maybe they don't want to be on top ... too large a target?

I can't listen to it either, but from your description it sounds like they're biased against it but can't find anything in particular to complain about, besides the interior, which is subjective and something I think most won't agree with, and the engine, which may be their opinion but calling it a cAr EngInE is silly.

    tl;dr

It's not the best truck on the market but it's the best truck Toyota has made. It's a great upgrade for current Toyota base but isn't going to take market share.

It's pretty spot on in the sense that it's not the best truck on the market but prob the best truck Toyota has made. They nailed it if what they say was true that it was built not to steal the segment but to sway current Tacoma owners into the Tundra instead of a competitor or to upgrade current Tundra owners.

Thats kinda where I am at with it right now, prior to driving and seeing real world not controlled by Toyota Testing and opinions. Toyota used a heavy hand rolling this out, trying to prevent any negative press for this one, all manufacturers do it, but Toyota seems to have really laid it on thick with this one. And that makes me a little cautious....

Jesus. Here we go again. There will always be negatives said about every vehicle ever produced. Does the perfect vehicle exist? No. So, why would we think the new Tundra is perfect? The only vehicles I have ever driven since I could drive, have been Toyota's. They offer everything I have ever needed in a truck and they have been beyond reliable for me. If you want the flash, get a Raptor or a TRX. Toyota is not dumb. They know exactly what they are doing.

One of my favorite conversations to have regarding cars is what makes them valuable long term. Some cars age better than others.

How it stacked up against the competition when it was introduced is a completely different conversation than what it was like long term.

Some cars are a Land Cruiser 80 Series, and need some time to show their greatness. I'd venture to say anyone that knows anything about cars would probably prefer the 80 to a Range Rover Classic or a first gen Grand Cherokee.

I'm not knocking it, I just wish these reviews were a little more upbeat and positive.

What is the “best” truck on the market? Kinda depends on how you define best. No one makes a truck that is best at towing, best at hauling, best off road, best fuel efficiency, best interior, best dependability, best value, etc, all at the same time.

Toyota was never going to steal the die hard fanbois of the big 3, but I think there are a decent number of people who have said “I’d like a Toyota but the gas mileage…” or “I like the reliability but the features are so outdated.”

Agreed, I think the majority of reviewers are concerned about all the wrong things... I tend to ignore them, some I've found decent: Savagegeese, Moto-man & TFL for testing.

Capstone hasn't been unveiled at all yet. We know it exists and is probably coming to the market in 2022 as a Denali/Platinum type competitor at a lower price point than those, but that's about it.

Agreed. Reading reviews in January shopping for our first fullsize SUV the Sequoia was ranked dead last. Turned out after my own research on fuelly.com the fuel mileage wasn't all that awful compared to others realworld.

Toyota just kinda smooths along in the fullsize market. They don't have five plants, they have one. No doubt they'd like to get more market share, but that's a huge investment.

That's certainly nice, but it's not exactly the same market the Tundra is competing in.

Even if my commute is 5 miles and I don't tow regularly? :boink:

Also, I'd probably need a step ladder to clear the snow off that.

Very nice, but looks like about a $85K price tag on a new 2022. Then again, maybe that price isn't far off of today's market considering all that you get for your money...:notsure: I'm sticking with my old Toyota's as they only get better with age!

One thing that I have always felt about Toyota is that it excels in things that's aren't really measurable. So they don't necessarily measure up on paper, but when you get in them and drive, they just feel like a better truck. Maybe the others have caught up, but in my experience, Toyotas are just tighter vehicles, that just feel solid. Especially 5-10 years down the road a Toyota is just as tight as it was on day one with no new rattles etc.
