Detuned for reliability? I think that's what Toyota does in certain cases.

My GMC 6.6 gasser will arrive in a couple months. It is a little disappointing that it only has a 6 speed but the 6L90 seems to be a solid transmission with a long history. I can’t complain about my Tundra 6 speed other than having to watch the temperature closely.

Detuning the HDs for reliability seems to be common. The GM 6.6 gas is based on their 6.2 in the 1/2 ton. Same block design but iron instead of aluminum, longer stroke, but they lowered the compression ratio. Makes about the same power but should be a more stout version.

I really really like my 6.6 gasser with the 6l90. It is buttery smooth and never hunts for gears under any circumstances. I see absolute no reason for more gears and increased shifting.

On cold mornings here, I am talking in the 20's. It takes about 10 minute truck warmup, then 8 miles of driving or so to get the transmission up to 120 degrees or so. It takes about 30-40 minutes before the trans gets up to 175 to 185. On long trips, it runs at 185-189. I towed a 6,500 pound trailer from Knoxville up to the in laws in Ohio. 193 is the hottest it ever got.

I honestly think the Tundra is the best towing half ton for reasonable loads.

However, when towing this HD truck is on a whole different universe. It really is amazing how big of a difference there is once you get 6k plus pounds hooked to them.

I like seeing those 6L90 towing temperatures under 200! My Tundra can get close to 240 in the big mountain passes.

I went and test drove a 6.6 custom trim 2500 the other day and it’s almost night and day vs my 6.2 ford. Way quieter, smoother, and just feels better. And yes they detune the HD gassers for reliability and longevity. The v8 engines in the half ton trucks would never stand up to the abuse that the HD gassers go through

The Custom trim looks just like my LT trim, obviously less options. It is crazy how much truck you get in the Custom trim level. Best deal if one is wanting to get into an HD level truck for a reasonable price.

Has there been anything posted about everyone’s guesses for the 2022 Tundra stats? Maybe an outline of all the items up for debate?

    V8, V6 or both options
    Engine displacement
    Transmission gears
Payload # (crewmax 4x4 since most common)
    Towing Rating (crewmax 4x4)
    EPA MPG city and highway
    Screen size
Use of Aluminum or other non-steel
    Other special features or ideas?

Just looked at some prices for the F-150 Hybrid. They were in the low to mid 70’s! If Toyota follows suit on pricing, I’m out. I was thinking 60k, but I guess that is wishful thinking. Hope I’m wrong..

    What I’m hoping:
    -TT v8
    -Hybrid option
    -8-speed
    -Sensible weight relief (aluminum throughout)
    -Fully-boxed frame
    -2k payload
-rear locker in TRD OR package and Pro trim at least
    -under $60k

    What I’m expecting:
    -TT v6
    -Same “triple tech” frame
-payload in the 1500 lb range for crewmax
-Visual design somehow worse than internet speculation (I imagine a truck front end version of the RAV4)
    -no rear locker
    -north of $60k

Will any of this affect me?
Not really. I love my current truck. And if my expectations are met rather than my hopes, it just means my truck will hold it’s value more.

Why not hope for a rear locker in every trim? And automatic 4x4. They'd better not forget that.

Given that I can buy a 2500 gasser for $60k CAD, there have to be at least a couple 1500 trim levels below that price point.

The best I could do on my Tacoma was 22-23mpg. The best my Tundra is around 19-20mpg. Towing my 5.5K RV the mpg is very close. To have the larger more capable truck I will gladly give up 2mpg.

Toyota is going to have to compete with this 2022 concept if they don't get the new Tundra out soon. :rofl:Glitch-in-Maps-has-lead-me-to-2022s-new-pickup-concept.jpg

Something doesn't look right with that front position rear tire. You would think even GM could make a round wheel. :D

I dont think they will use the same triple tech frame. it seems highly likely there will be coils in the rear and IMO the triple tech is too floppy for that.

I test drove a 7.3 Tremor and a 6.6 Chevy Gasser. Sure the Tremor has a bit of a cool factor, but I was underwhelmed with the Tremor's feel. It constantly shifted and rode rough. The Chevy felt much better and the power felt closer to my Supercharged Tundra. Plus the Ford is roughly $7k more for similar equipped trucks. I have no brand loyalty to any of the domestic trucks and I would buy a GMC 2500 gasser if I bought a new truck today. It would pain me not to buy a new Tundra for reliability, but for the money you get much more truck with the GMC HD and I think reliability is probably on par with the Tundra with it being a HD.

My first thought with the Tremor was that they named it after the way it feels when driving it unloaded.

Yeah I was intentionally staying away from those because of the ongoing transmission issues with class action lawsuits going on right now with the new Chevy Silverado and GMC Denali‘s

You're right. Maybe I should've just said it's probably less of a factor than with their 1/2 tons.

It's a different transmission. The HD 6 speed transmission in the gassers are actually pretty reliable and proven. I believe the ones you are referring to are the 8 and 10 speeds in the 1/2 tons.

Which transmissions though? The GM 6.6 gasser that he referred to has the 6L90 transmission. It might be an old school 6 speed but based on my research it’s been very reliable for the decade+ it’s been produced.

I agree that GM makes the best HD trucks as well but, to play devil's advocate, Chevy doesn't have a direct competitor to the Tremor. How much would a GMC AT4 cost in comparison?

From what I remember when I was shopping, a gasser Tremor equipped like an AT4 would cost you around $62k otd. A gasser HD AT4 can be had for around $56.

Good to know, though surprising. I thought GM tended to be expensive compared to the competition.

The AT4 I ordered is about $55k with about $3k worth of added features. Trim level is between a Denali and the SLT and is probably equivalent to a Ford Lariat.

The Tremor is an added package to other trims, I believe from XLT all the way to Platinum. The main things that a Tremor has over an AT4 is a small lift and 35” tires. The rest of the features are about the same.
