IMHO it’s just basic advancement and innovation. I remember the same thing being said about adding new radios that included the new FM stations back in the early 70’s. I remember my dad saying that his AM radio worked just fine and don’t need this new stuff. Can you imagine today’s vehicles with just an AM radio with mechanical push buttons in the dash.

I know their are those who keep saying they don’t need all this new tech and that fine. However it’s just the natural evolutionary curve for the advancement of automobile design and it’s here to stay.

It's not exactly the same as back then.

I work in electronics engineering and manufacturing, I am very familiar with current "state-of-the-art", and as a hobby I also restore antique and vintage audio equipment.
Back in the day, an AM radio was a big investment, and people expected to get decades of service out of them, so much so that technicians would come to your home to service these old sets. Something like FM could motivate someone to upgrade, but look...FM is still relevant today. Things were expensive, and tech moved slowly so people would hold onto electronics longer.

Heck, even today I can still play vinyl from 70 years ago on my Technics turntable, it is all still relevant. Have an older car with an OEM CD player that still works? Yup, throw a CD in and all is well.

However, I have a drawer full of Android phones going back to 2009. They power on. But, using Android 1.x or 2.x they are totally shut out of the apps store, unless I apk something into them. Yeah the browser still works, kind of. But, for the most part they should be sent to recycling. I keep my old phones as media players (Pandora or Spotify) until those apps no longer support them.
Same for my "Smart TVs" at home. Every few years they become way too slow. My solution is to get a ROKU stick, but you get my point, it doesn't last very long.

I'm afraid that we are conditioned to accept a formerly very expensive device becoming a paperweight in under 6-8 years, and basically unwanted and uncool in 2 years, and this mentality is creeping into our vehicles.

That old AM radio still works. So does the FM. Will all of the apps in our modern car still work 10 years on? HIGHLY doubt it. Of course, the AM, FM radio, MP3 and BT will still work. But the bigger issue is that people will tire of the tech they have in the car, and since it's baked in like a tumor....the car is discarded just because of the app integration. Or, worse yet, what happens if you keep the vehicle 10+ years and the infotainment dies? You could take out the old AM radio and put a new Pioneer in, but many of these new vehicles are going down paths that the aftermarket won't be able to match.

As I said before, only a minority of customers see things this way. For people who change out a vehicle every few years, no big deal. But, it'll make buying used vehicles weird. Like getting a 1990 LS400 in mint condition with a built-in phone that can't get a signal anymore (that system was shut down) or an OnStar vehicle with the 2G OnStar that actually doesn't work anymore because 2G is dead and gone.
What if cars from the 1980's had a Commodore mini PC in them? How awkward would that look??
That's what our current vehicles will be like.
I don't think older cars with tape decks and CD players will be as odd when old as the latest vehicles will be.

This could be a dealer thing but with my 20 Camaro (yes I have signed papers confirming this) I would get a loaner if anything went wrong with it. The service department says they mostly loan out Silverados and Colorados. It could also be because I have a Camaro too but I dunno.

I definitely agree that it is likely dealer-dependent. But I have heard lots of stories, and I know for a fact as a long time Nissan and Infiniti owner, you can be expected to be treated much better at Infiniti than Nissan when service time comes around. Not just that Infiniti doesn't have Versa loaners, but they also aren't stingy about loaners at all.

It's why I buy Japanese vehicles, I don't want to find out the loaner situation! All of my Japanese vehicles have been crazy reliable, only needed warranty work less than 5 times in over 25 years of owning cars. And in all cases, very minor things.

I have not had any experience with Nissan and Infiniti but I have experienced this at my Toyota dealer where I bought my Tundra. As far as GM goes just like with the Ram trucks my family and relatives growing up and now I guess based on the stories I have heard here have been really lucky with them to have no issues. My mom drives nothing but GM cars or small SUVs and my Dad drives whatever he likes at the time as he is driving a Subaru right now. This Camaro is my first GM actually that I personally have owned and its really fun for me and I love the car. That being said I guess you could say it allows me to test the waters in case the 2022 Tundra does not fit my needs and I need a 3/4 Ton which I have my eyes on the 6.6 Gas and a 2500 or if the price isn't much higher a 3500 SRW.

CarPlay—while I think it’s fine most of the time—is just one more thing to go wrong, and it is exactly 0% of the reason I bought a damn truck. If I wanted CarPlay 6 years ago, I guess I would’ve bought a Highlander. CarPlay is STILL kinda buggy in my truck. I don’t want to imagine what it was like 6 years ago in the soccer mom vehicles (as you say) that it originally came in.

The more systems involved in a vehicle, the more failure points involved. The quicker those systems are repeatedly updated and refreshed, the more likely they will have issues. I HATE that only one company in the entire American market seems to get this and builds their entire manufacturing philosophy around it. But that’s where we are I guess. People are wowed by shiny things.

And look, I’d like to see more info on the new Tundra too, but how is being exactly on their determined schedule lazy?

I just built a maxed out 2021 TRD PRO on toyotas.com. It only came out to $56K. That's a sweet dealio!
5% increase would be $2800 more which is still under $60K.
    Still reasonable actually IMO

That's part of the price premium to buy a "luxury" vehicle. My wife gets a loaner even when she gets an oil change in her ES. No rental papers signed and they don't even ask her to replace the gas used.

Yep, our local Toyota dealership has 4 or 5 loaners. A Tacoma, corolla, rav 4, and something else. The Lexus dealership my wife bought her car at has 40-50 loaners. She takes her nx in for an oil change or any service and there is a nx waiting for her to drive. Part of the price of the luxury cars.

Picking up a '21 on the 20th of this month. I asked about the 2022 models and the sales rep that I'm dealing with said they expect to have an ordering guide but no pricing for the 2022 models in Canada on the 19th for what it's worth...
Have to admit that's a decent design and caters to folks who would be in construction or heavy industry as well. The last thing a person needs is to be fumble fuckin around with half frozen dirty hands looking for a micro fiber cloth or hand lotion before you can touch a screen to adjust the hvac or whatever other function they imbed in the panel. Or picture that princess with a Pomeranian on her lap wiping off that terrible Cheeto stain with her overpriced diamond ring. Hopefully they use hd gorilla glass on it as I'm aware of the limitations when swiping a $2800+ marine MFD display.
No problem with advancements in tech when it keeps the folks that may use it as a logging, construction site, or mine crummy and family going to soccer or ball equally happy and that's not always an easy task to accomplish.

It's a long drawn out process that did not seem to be well thought out or controlled. To me it comes across as unprepared and lacking the level of effort necessary to give positive results. That to me is laziness of preparation.

Dunno why but after seeing how smoothly and better that Chevy was released, I just got sic and tired of Toyota stringing us along for what I think most have said is an ugly design (Red limited model) and a lacking amount of cylinders.

Who knows. Maybe I should just shut up and eat a snickers. :notsure:

I leased a 2016 GTI, and it had Android Auto in it. The infotainment in that car worked perfectly.
However, the dealer kept sending me a notice that the GTI infotainment needed a "software update", and anytime I was in for service, they'd remind me. Nope. I know better, I declined the update for 2-1/2 years. Near the end of my lease, I figured, sure go ahead and update the car. The Android Auto was absolute garbage after that. Kept disconnecting from phone, lagging, audio cutouts, and worse of all, rebooting. It never had that problem before.
I HATE updates, you never know, it's actually possible things can get worse.
The Android Auto in our 2020 Toyota is buggy too. If a Google Map is running on main screen while playing Pandora, the music cuts out every time the map moves. With the same cable and phone, works fine in my other car.

GM released a nice update to the Silverado, kudos to them but honestly it doesn’t move the needle for me. Not because it isn’t a nice package but because it seemed like a logical progression for them. GM fans have been clamoring for a while a ZR2 ever since it came out with the Colorado so it was natural for them to bring that to the Silverado. They already had a working relationship with Multimatic and already had a 6.2L V8 so it just kind of made sense to just drop those parts in. Stellantis and GM are the only ones supporting V8 platforms now while Ford and Toyota have moved to V6TT. GM needed something to occupy the race truck space and this was kind of it. I think it competes more on a TRD Pro level than it does Raptor or TRX territory though. I’m not surprised nor am I completely wow’d by it either. Definitely not a truck that has me reconsidering the 2022 Tundra by any means and TBH I never considered GM in the first place.

I had a Tundra Rock Warrior and traded it in for a Tacoma because, at the time I no longer needed a truck to haul a trailer, motorcycles and quads. My wife discouraged me from transitioning from a Tundra to the Tacoma, and encouraged me to buy the showroom Tundra truck with a 7” lift. Unlike some of the people on this thread I did, and do not not need my wife’s permission to make a decision or a purchase. Unfortunately for me, on this occasion my wife was right. Two weeks after I purchased the Tacoma, during a first fishing trip, I realized the Tacoma was too small for me. I have been waiting, and waiting, and waiting, for the new Tundra since 2016. I previously owned a Chevy and it served me well. I have monitored the reviews and was disappointed in reading most of them. I continue to ponder the reliability factor of the Tundra, and when a TRD PRO will be available at a reasonable price. My Tacoma’s value has increased about $10,000 in the past six to eight months. At this point I am seriously considering buying a 70’s square body to tow a new trailer to hunt and fish. When the prices drop on the 2022 Tundra I can purchase that, if the specs align with my wants and needs. In the meantime I can hear the rumble and feel the horsepower of a V8 engine, and I will more than likely keep my old truck to roll around town in. I guess I was right when I chose my username to be a dreamer, because it appears it is all it was. I am disappointed in Toyota’s decision to eliminate the V8 option. What is your opinion on my situation? I am open to criticism.

Honestly? The part where you said, “Unlike some of the people on this thread I did, and do not not need my wife’s permission to make a decision or a purchase…” came across like a snide dickhead remark. Plus the grammar and punctuation was off and you wrote ‘not’ two times in a row. As far as an opinion on your situation? Be grateful for your problems. You have a wife with good taste in trucks and good sense. Your taco has gone up in value and it sounds like you’re financially ok. Buy a 2021 Tundra with the V8 and again learn to be grateful.

Finding a good square body is a 30k adventure these days. If I had to get a brand new truck and wanted a V8, I'd buy a Ram 1500. If I needed an HD truck I'd buy a Ram 2500.

If I had to have a Toyota, I'd get a used 2019-2021 when prices come back down.

If I personally had to do it over again I'd buy a Ram. Payload rating for my Tundra is 1200lbs. With tires, rims, diamondback bed cover, and other mods I'm probably at 1000 now before passengers and gear. If I could break even (~60k) I'd sell it. I want to haul a boat next season and a loaded up truck doesn't have much left for the hitch weight.

Or it's because those vehicles would be so strangled by the USA regulations that their legendary statuses would be ruined by the watered down and severely regulated things that we would be allowed to have.

Hilux is a great example of this. We see them doing all kinds of amazing things all over the world, but how badly would their clear capabilities be cut down by regulations, emissions, safety standards, and even the door stickers we get here in The States? Sure, you see them loaded with bunches of stuff overseas, but would any of that be in their legal ratings here?

Hell, look at headlights in Europe compared to here. Ask a military member who has served over there about it. They have WAY better systems for high beams over there, but because of retarded language in our laws they actually have to downgrade the lights to pass US safety standards.

Stupidity like that is why we don't get to have those. Not because Toyota gives two :censored:s about how we use them.

I don't know about high beams but low beams on cars here are already blinding. What more do you want?

It’s not about asking the wife for permission but rather being respectful to your partner before spending 40-60k of the family money.

Its the way they change. Veteran buddy spent time in Germany and their high beams are basically controlled with a sliding cut off like what we see in LED/HID lights, but it is all one bulb/element. The cut off just slides up and down over the light to control it, whereas verbage in the US law requires that the high beam be able to be turned off, so the superior EU system has to be swapped out for ours in order for cars to be sold here. It's so dumb, because their system works better.

Does it have the same catalytic converters? Are there the same emissions control devices? Is it tuned exactly the same as those motors here in the states? Honest questions, because I don't know.

Very true. My wife and I have separate "overflow" accounts, so we can spend whatever we want on anything we want. I've been saving for a new vehicle for 3 years now, so my wife doesn't have input on my vehicle choice. She does get concerned about the cost of registration (super high here in Seattle area) on a new vehicle and the insurance. But if we were using family funds, yeah I'd never get what I want.

This means nothing. In fact, if anything, it should be a warning: with vehicles so overpriced, good luck finding what you want. Anything. My son will be driving soon. I thought a 2016+ Civic Coupe with manual transmission would be a good 1st car. Guess how much they are worth now? $25K. That's how much they cost new and they are approaching 6 years old and over 60K miles. No way, I paid $20K for my wife's brand-new 2020 Toyota Corolla.

It's like our house. We don't really like it, and would like a different house. Paid $420K in 2012 for it, now "worth" $1.05M (agent offered us $1.16M last week). Oh yay, look at how "rich" we are!? If we want to buy a different house we like better, there's a cut-throat bidding war (in my area, start at 10% over asking and keep going) for any house that is nice, but in truth most houses are crap being thrown on the market because people are desperate and previously undesirable homes are now desirable.

Heck, I bought an off-lease Q60 3-1/2 years ago, and now it's worth at least $6K more than I paid for it. I own 2 vehicles, have thought about selling it several times and banking the cash, but I'm not so sure this economy is going to improve in less than 3 years, and I'd rather just enjoy what I have.

I have no doubt it would be possible to make it pass the emissions because of the same motor, but if you have to retune it and add catalytic converts that restrict it's flow, it will not perform like the others. It would also be added cost to fit them for the USA emissions if they don't already pass. The other challenge might be the wheel base. IDK what a Hilux sits at, but the EPA does economy requirements based on the wheelbase of vehicles. It's idiotic, but that's how they do it. That's why the tiny trucks have all died off here. If you have the wheelbase of a Honda Accord, then you have to get the same MPG as a Honda Accord. Even if you used the same engine as the Accord, the aerodynamic brick of a small truck will tank the MPGs and you can't make the EPA overlords happy.

Honestly, I think the biggest reason we don't get them is because the Taco already owns the midsize market here.
