My neighbor 2 doors up from me has a new Ranger. His is lifted and has what appears to be probably 35" tires. It is a sharp looking little truck. He also has an exhaust of some sort that will make any true ricer proud. It sounds like a pissed off bumble bee. When he pulls out of the subdivision in the mornings, he hammers that little Ranger. It is so loud and goes absolutely no where..... It does look pretty nice though.

I have to be honest, even they are new I bet I have seen 2 to 3 Rangers on the road.

We were having some warranty and recall work done on our F450's at work and I went to handle the paperwork. I have kind of made friends with a couple of the guys at the dealer since ours have been to the dealer so much..... Anyway, they say the rangers are not selling very well and pointless. They are basically same price as F150's, no better on mileage, and after better incentives on the F150 a consumer can get an f150 for same price.

Only people they see buying them are shall we say, very older people, or people coming from small cars that want to get into a truck and afraid of parking a truck.....

Did I hear that correctly? 2.3 liter 4 banger and it only gets 16mpg?? Um, no thanks.

According to this the Ranger isn’t doing as bad as the dealer you’re using thinks they are .FB25ECD9-1B0E-47FA-9226-D9C3FD92BAB5.jpg

Tough to say what any numbers for any vehicle mean in 2020, but even tougher to compare 2019 to 2020 Ranger numbers. Rangers didn't really start rolling off the assembly line until the very end of '18. Probably a pretty slow ramp up into the first half of '19, so comparing year 1 and year 2 sales doesn't necessarily mean too much. Now what we can take away is none wants a Frontier, but apparently some are stuck buying it.

You could just turn off traction control but like Matt said, he didn't know how.

I don’t think the 8 speed would do much in mpg. The Landcruiser has the 5.7 8 speed combo, but still has the same mpg.

Aerodynamics is more complicated than most of us think. Drag can be contributed to more than just front area.

The change from 2013 to 2014 increased the hood height and more squared body, yet mpg remain similar.

Weight is probably the major factor.

Have to remember they're comparing Ranger to F150, which has about 10x or more the sales depending on the area. I bet there's a lot of us that don't NEED a half ton and the 1/4 tons would work for us - but then you compare the 2 whether it's a Tacoma to a Tundra or Ranger to a F150 and you get a lot more truck for the same or a tiny bit less. So if they have 4 people come in to buy trucks and start by looking at a Ranger then for fun compare it to a F150 and 3 decide to switch they're still seeing most switch.

Isn't that smaller than the size of the supercharger in the TRX? I think I recall it was 2.4L.

Weight and aero are definitely more important than the 8 speed. Still getting the Ram 5.7 broken in but it has very similar MPG to the Tundra 5.7.

One thing I notice when driving an F150 is how easily it coasts at 100 km/h compared to the Tundra. Above 70 km/h it feels like the Tundra is still in gear when you're off the throttle as compared to the F150 that feels like it clutches in at those speeds. If the Tundra rolled more freely at highway speeds I think it would gain a few MPG right there.

I am 6.1" 180 lbs. I had my 2018 TRD sport with all upgrades for 12K miles before I traded it in. I think it is the best looking truck, but once you get in and start driving, its like a toy truck. There is a lot I liked about it, but its not about that.
    1. Why does the steering wheel adjust only like 1'' out?
    2. Getting in and out was such a pain. Id always hit the steering wheel with my legs.
    3. Most power was always at 4K RPM and until then it felt underpowered.
    4. Truck struggled to keep 65-70 mph on highways (especially against the wind)
    5. MPG was 16-17 combined ... rarely 20-21
    6. Towing 4K uphill was a nightmare
    7. Don't even start me on cabin noise. I couldnt talk with anyone on the phone while driving on the highway. And no it is not common. My tundra is as quiet as my wife's mercedes. Tacoma was sh**t.
I am much happier with my Tundra and if someone asks me whether they should buy a Tacoma or not, I definitely would NOT recommend it.

1.) That is a valid concern that annoyed me
2.) Agreed, its one of the reasons I moved to a Tundra
3.) I never had trouble with the power
4.) Not my experience at all, it easily did 70mph +
    5.) I had a lifetime average of 22.5mpg over 47k miles so I can't relate.
6.) I never towed over hills so I can't relate.
7.) I don't think cabin noise was very bad but this is subjective. With AT tires it was loud but that is to be expected. My tacoma was quieter than my wife's CRV by a long shot.

I have been in contact with Toyota Marketing and I do some work with Toyota thru Morotrsports and they have confirmed with me they are getting rid of the V* to start with and introducing the lexus ls500 hybrid engine as a V6 and it has a hybrid option.

Interesting, the drivetrain loss is probably very high on the Tundra.

The newer engines are probably designed with much lower friction, everything from the cylinders to the differentials. I remember reading an article about the Mazda Skyactive technology that utilize the philosophy to reduce friction in all moving mechanical components to maximize efficiency without resorting to complex turbo or hybrid tech.

    true,

I still have this loaner, and man, whoever designed this transmission should be fired, its just terrible. it seems that they want you to be at the absolute lowest RPM without a stall to the point of it seems likes its bogging down all the time and the engine isn't even running smooth.

    its a total POS

You’re right but you’d think they wouldn’t compare the Ranger to the F series since they sell more than any other vehicle in North America.

no disagreements here. For every thing a Tacoma does well it has a nagging issue that works against it.

The 2022 will most likely have better MPG and more power, but hopefully it has game changing innovation.

A truly useful tailgate, not just ladders or different ways to open.

    - How about a tailgate that has built in ramps to load and unload easier.
    - Tailgate with built in extender, that can fully covered on all sides. Also, the reverse camera can still be used
    - Or Maybe even an extendable bed. Extendable from 5 ft to 7ft, therefore shorter overall length when not needed.

I don't see the next Crewmax cab smaller than the current. The current rear doors are huge.
    - Maybe too much to ask for, sliding back doors or Model X type doors, or just new hinge innovation.

Everyone is doing the panoramic sunroof or generator in the bed. No need for that. Tundra always had the full roll down rear window.
    - Go a bit further. How about a rear hatch door (or removable rear panels) to pass through to the bed.
    - Many people put toppers. How about factory topper (thus better integration and seal). Together with a rear hatch door, can config it to change it to a SUV or camper, thus access between cab and bed. This would be the overland vehicle of choice.

The next tundra has been confirmed to have a v6 hybrid that puts out 35000 hp and 45000 torque while maintaining 200 mpg. Standard with 3.0 bypass, front and rear lockers on 38’s. Pricing is about 25k

If it can't fit 40's without a BMC I'm out. First mod would be an LS swap to get a V8 back where it belongs.

I really hope it doesn't look like the concepts, f**king hideous. It looks like they took the front end of my 7 year old 4Runner and fused it to the Tundra and the rest of it looks like a new Chevy. A V6 will kill that truck, just like the crappy powertrain in the Tacoma.

None of those are concepts. They are all just renderings from 3rd parties. Even the leaked video bit hasn't been confirmed in any official capacity. Nobody but Toyota actually knows what it looks like right now.

There always seems to be a normal Tundra behind those secret under cover Tundra when scooting around doing R/D on those new models which I understand why.

Sure is a giveaway that those are two Tundra with the capes on!

Kinda looks like the front is 'wider' looking and a bit more angular. I'm almost wondering if they're going to do something like Chevy did with the Silverado several years back, with the flat sides.

I read somewhere, so not sure if it's true, that they pad the covers to hide body lines. If it's true, then it'd be really hard to know for sure what is underneath.

Either way, I'm interested to see what it looks like. Might even go drive one for giggles, but I think I'll keep my old tech reliable one.

If I saw that and I was in a rental I'd crash into it to get a closer look. :monocle:
