I admire your brand loyalty, but in their current form, the Ranger is vastly superior to the Tacoma in every category. Having driven both of them recently and doing lots of research, I can safely say Ford beat Toyota this round. Hell, even the Euro spec VW truck is better than the Tacoma. While its awesome looking from the outside, and a great vehicle for aesthetic mods, Toyota missed on the ergonomics and the drivetrain is the worst thing ever put on an off-road targeted vehicle. The transmission function is just dumb, and makes the truck pointless for anything but cruising around town, and even that sucks. They're selling a lot of them based on previous results, but the current Gen Taco is not the best mid-size on the road right now. Most doesn't mean best, it just means most.

    Reliably isn't a category?

Exactly the same reason why F-150 is #1 selling truck....

Sure, "reliability" is a category, but just because we like Toyotas doesn't automatically mean the others are unreliable. Toyota's been riding the reliability train for a long time, and rightly so, but that doesn't mean the Ranger is therefore unreliable. Hell, I had a 1988 Ranger with 275K miles on it, and besides the mirrors not staying in place after 45MPH, the thing ran like a champ. If you think the Tacoma is the best thing since sliced bread that's cool with me. I'm just pointing out the fact that the current Gen is not their best effort, and the timing couldn't be worse for the new Tundra because some of those same "improvements" may find their way into the Gen 4. I have no data or metrics to prove one way or the other, but my personal opinion is the Ranger is a better truck than the Tacoma. Reliability of the Ranger remains to be seen since its only been out a couple of years.

I drove a 2018 tacoma for 47k miles and dont really agree with most of the complaints ive read here in this thread. I’m a 6 foot 2 large man, as well, keep that in mind. To each their own, but i think theres a loud minority of tacoma haters. Obviously most of us here decided at some point they preferred fullsize trucks over other vehicles in their life, but for what the Tacoma is/does/is marketed for, its a great vehicle.

I don't have a Taco and it's highly unlikely I'll ever own a midsize so I don't have a dog in this fight but Ford was a lot more reliable in 1988 than they are now. I see no reason to believe the Ranger is going to magically be more reliable than their other vehicles.

I''m not a hater, I really wanted a Tacoma as recently as this July. The size thing I could get past since I knew going in that its a smaller truck (I did fit in the Ford better), but what I couldn't get past was the transmission that decided how and when it wanted to shift. The non-sequential shift pattern based on speed is not a good fit for the Tacoma. A computer deciding the optimum gear could be awesome, if done correctly... Toyota did not do it correctly, and the Tacoma suffers for it, a lot. The number of complaints on this issue brought the Tacoma's years of "reliability" back into the normal realm with one poorly designed, ill-advised attempt to get more modern.

I guess we'll see, from the front seat of our full-size Tundras! In fact, the Ranger is only new here in the US. The platform has been around about 9-10 years in the Australian and Asian markets, and has done really well. To lump it in with the F150 is not really a good connection, the platforms have very little to do with each other besides the blue oval on the front.

Break, break, anyone have any new info on the Gen 4 Tundra? I think the Taco discussion has run its course.

I'll have a hard time believing the ranger will EVER be as dependable as a tacoma. . .but I guess only time will tell. . On another note. . . I'm not sure if this has been discussed before but it's something I've always wondered. . . I know the tundra is a heavy ass half ton. . But what if, you took our tundras, put an 8 speed tranny in it, with a taller rear gear. . .wouldn't if automatically get better mileage and overall better performance, if done correctly? I mean lower ratios in the lower gears and taller in the higher gears. Why couldn't that work? Just something I've wondered. . . .

Id love to see the 5.7L stick around with an 8-sp and a hybrid drive, aluminum body panels to reduce weight and raise payload, and a fully boxed frame.

I don’t know how you fit. Either you drove one without a sunroof, or you’re not actually 6’2”. I’m 6’4” and if the Tacoma has a sunroof I can’t put my head up straight.

An that is your opinion, we all have one. My opinion is the Taco sucks. After having 4 of them I have a good idea of the vehicle and I have no hate of it, but facts are facts.... A 15 year old chassis with drum rear brakes and now powered by a camry motor with a powerband that doesn't give any power until 4000 rpm or more. With an auto trans that is tuned to try and get the best mileage. All while barely getting better mileage than the Tundra. Is the tow rating still 5000lbs?

Sorry but the Ranger, and even the GM, is a better truck. With that said the 1st gen Taco was an excellent truck and I wish they still made it. The 2nd gen was good until they screwed it up with the camry motor debacle. IMO of course. YMMV

As far as the new Tundra...the Superbowl is coming

    Agreed!
Ford is the KING of planned obsolescence, completely updating models every few years to address the old problems while creating a whole list of new ones.

People have different comfort levels. People can also be the same height and have different length torsos, legs, necks, etc.

My wife is shorter than me and has longer legs. When I get in her vehicle, the seat is farther back than I like it, and the mirror is pointed into the backseat.

No that is not real. It's a render. There are no full photos that have been released. Only a bunch of speculation and little snippets.

Front end highly likely, front wheels back is not the new Tundra, it's just a Titan. V8 is rumored to be gone, many sources saying it's gone, but until it's released and confirmed the V8 is gone it's all speculation.

Yeah, that pic popped up on page 8 and it was shown to be a photoshopped blend of "leaks" and a Titan.

Yeah I didn’t think so but I wanted to make sure. I talked to a couple Toyota execs when I was at the dealership a week ago. They said the photos will be released during the Super Bowl since there’s no Chicago auto show where they usually release it

That article says, “According to internet reports, Toyota will discontinue the Tundra’s V8 with a V6-only powertrain.”

The only thing this statement confirms is that a bunch of people on the internet think it’s going away. I’m still hopeful that it won’t be going away totally.

F150 is reliable (not as much as a Tundra) and there is a heck of a lot of loyalty to it. Historically it's been an exciting platform so it's very well positioned in the market as an icon. Also, F150 is sold to fleets at great prices.

Gotta say you're right, but even if the Ranger is the better truck, the Tacoma is selling like mad, the apparent problems are not a dealbreaker for those buyers.

Had 3 tacomas ('96, '05, '15) and test drove the 16, while seating position is hardly an issue for me, I skipped 3rd gen because of the engine/trans combo being so un-truck like.
I keep hearing Manual is the way to go, totally different truck cause of it... no manuals in Mexico so no experience with it :(

But heck, love the Tundra more than the Taco

Yep, and this is the off-road capable Tacoma. Its not the getting stuck part, anyone can bury anything if they take the wrong line, its the fact that it can't get itself out of there because the computer thinks its smarter than you are. You shouldn't have to trick your truck into operating correctly for the situation. Kinda long video, but start at around the 5 minute mark. The owner is not that great of a driver, but when Matt has issues then its a problem.
