When I decided I was going to go to a single vehicle I knew I wanted a truck so I had the ability to go and do whatever I needed to. I had assumed that I couldn't afford a full size truck so I was researching all the midsize trucks, and I really liked the Ranger. Reliability was my only concern, but I had just kinda settled on it after reading up on the lackluster transmission behavior of the Taco. Then I went and priced them.... It was only a couple grand less than an F150! Thought to myself "Well hell, a couple grand isn't that hard to come up with. Let's check out some 1/2 tons."

Long story short, my Tundra didn't cost anymore than the Ranger would have, and I am so happy I went Toyota. This forum was a big part of that decision, so I thank you all for steering me in the right direction!

The Tacomas cost about what the Tundras do, too.

Never thought I would see this much dislike for the Tacoma on here. Especially since a lot of us came from TW over to this site.

I know! It's insane isn't it? I shopped the midsize trucks because I thought I'd save some dollars, but holy crap was I wrong. The only one you can get any cheaper is the Nissan Frontier, and that's only because it's as old as the Tundra!

I LOVE the way the thing looks, and it's still super reliable. It has it's strengths, but it's not perfect. Neither is a Tundra. I mean, the payload rating on the Tundra is abysmal by today's standards. Just like the shift behavior of the Taco is not so great. I still love my Tundra, even with her flaws. If the Taco were $10,000 cheaper I'd probably be in one right now, transmission fits be damned.

Stating the known weaknesses isn't necessarily dislike. It's just facts.

I don't get it either. I had a 2018 Tacoma which I liked. The only reason I traded it in was because I needed a bigger truck to pull my TT.

There are a lot of hunters here in south jersey. And a lot of them love the Tacoma. They like it because it's small and can fit down the woods trails with no problem. It's reliable and looks good. I don't know anyone with a ranger or colorado. Everyone I know with a mid size has a tacoma.

I try to remember that Toyota is either the largest, or 2nd largest car maker in "the world" (neck and neck with Volkswagen "group"). Toyota's USA market is obviously an important piece of their business model, but hardly their bread 'n butter. Ford, on the other hand, has the F-150 in the USA market and dominates there. They are basically a one trick pony though. Sure, they make other vehicles and have a reasonable presence in the industrial market. But in the bigger scheme, the F-150 is not the major player, worldwide, that it is in the USA. So, Ford can put all of the R&D, marketing, etc, into selling the F-150, while Toyota is designing, selling and marketing a varied fleet of autos and trucks worldwide. Global sales of Fords are ~50% of that of Toyota. In addition, the fastest growing markets are in China and India (shocker, right?). I don't see a full size pickup being a major player in either of those countries.

I don't think that Toyota has lost automotive passion. They continue to build attractive, reliable vehicles with an emphasis on reliability. And, they have staked a huge investment on new hybrid technology. I think that is why they have not pursued diesel more, in that they don't see it as sustainable in the future. They remain active in automobile performance and racing. I don't see that changing any time soon. In addition, Toyota leads automakers in the design of hydrogen fuel cell technology. We all love heritage, but the future does not include 40 year old tech.

Whether I like it or not, all manufacturers are going to have to produce vehicles that are more fuel efficient. That has been a trend since I was born. Obviously, there will be trade-offs. I predict that the new Tundra will have slightly greater payload and towing capacity. I predict an 8-10 spd transmission. If the 5.7L V8 is offered at all, I think it will be a transition power plant only, until the smaller displacement engines prove their reliability. I think the new truck will also be narrower and not as tall. It may even be shorter in length as the designers learn to maximize space in the engine bay and cab. I also think the new gen. will weigh less with lighter construction materials. I won't be surprised to see coils in the back. Lastly, I predict that Toyota will be one of the first light truck makers to design trucks with aerodynamic efficiency in mind. Pickups have traditionally been built with a blunt front end, and is one of the reasons that most full size trucks suck at fuel mileage. This is definitely a form over function tradition that has a limited life span. That will mean a change in how the truck looks. That may be the most difficult change that traditional truck owners will be presented with.

Again, I keep in mind that the Tundra is only a very small piece of the Toyota brand. It has never been their flagship and I don't see that changing. With that said, I love these trucks. This is my 3rd Tundra and they have all been great. With that said, I can't wait to see the new Gen. I don't know if, or when, I will be getting one, because I love my current truck.

For those fearful of the future, and of change... I encourage patience. Luddites will always be disappointed in change, but rarely are the end of days realized. And, for those who don't like the new Tundra, there should be ample excellent used Tundras for sale for years into the future.

Everything you said is very good, if not spot on, except this. Each truck is designed with aerodynamic efficiency in mind, even the current Tundra. The aero engineers are given a shape that fits mechanically and design then told to maximize aerodynamics - it's why the new GM HD mirrors have only one mounting point, why the Tundra has the raised strakes on mirrors and taillights, and why the top of the tailgates (and roof in GM's) have plastics extensions. It's all about maximizing air flow, Tesla has already gone more extreme than the others, but since the mid 2000's all pickups have aero tweaks in their design, it's just been one of the last steps in the engineering process for them.

In the end, you can only get so much energy out of a gallon of gas, no more. How you utilize that energy is where we are at today.

I like the Tacoma for what it is too, but as others have said— every time I go to the dealership, I sit in it and think, “nope, still don’t fit”

There aren’t many places you can get a truck for under 40k.

I admit that I'm not an engineer, but have a general idea between an air foil and a barn door.

So you think the front end will end up looking like a Prius? Between aesthetics and not wanting the extra 2-3 feet in the front it won't happen. I expect it to be more sloping than it currently is, very similar to the new Ram, but it'll still be fairly flat - see the test mule in this thread, still very flat front end relatively.

It doesn't have to look like a Prius for a truck to be more fuel efficient. Pick-ups have been rectangular in overall shape, blunt nosed and tall for the past 20 years. Why not engineer some aerodynamics into the design. You can change mirror and windshield shape and that clearly helps. However, the overall height, square shape of the front end and lack of taper front to back along the sides are killing mpg for pickups. I get it that aesthetics are incredibly important, but we can't keep driving '66 GMC aerodynamics and expect to get 30 mpg, a 15,000 lb towing and 3,000 lb. payload. Engine improvements are incrementally improving, but I don't expect the new Gen. Tundra to be dramatically better than what Ford and Chevy are currently offering in terms of Hp, torque and mpg. If the new truck gets 25 mpg, I'll be super impressed.

That's one big reason why I got a Tundra. The '16 Tacomas were having major problems when they came out and priced about $4-5k less than a Tundra. So I got the Tundra instead.

Omg man, thats like me! I sit in one every week since I browse dealers for fun. I loved my Taco and upgraded a ton on it but hated it at the same time. I am looking for reasons to buy it again, but the sitting position is like an F1 car...plus all of the other cons. I really want to go back but hell no...

I never looked at the Taco, just to close size wise to my Ridgeline. I wanted a full size truck for comfort and towing ability, being 65 and retired figured I'm getting what I want. Sure it would be nice to get better fuel economy but I don't drive that much now anyway.

I am very interested in seeing the new Tundra, not for purchase I'm just a bit of a motor head. I do love my Tundra and expect it to be my last vehicle purchase.

Totally on board with getting what you want if you are going to pay new vehicle prices. Sucks to pay that and have to settle. I'm also with you on the interest in the new Tundra. Not going to buy one, but I want to see what all they pull off with it.

The Taco really doesn't get mileage that is a whole lot better. It's what, 3 MPG or something? Same for the 4runner. Ran the math before and 3MPG over 15K miles a year with a $3.00 per gallon price tag only works out to be about $50 per month in savings. Cheaper gas means it's even less than that. MPG really isn't a factor between the two for me.

Now, if I were going to be doing a bunch of off roading, tight trails, etc. then I'd have gotten a 4Runner. Love the look, drives solid. Only complaint I ever see on them is that they are a little slow, but I didn't mind it when I drove my brother's. Once you do a lift, tires, and gear, neither the Taco or the 4Runner is getting much better MPG than a Tundra. For MPG to really make an impact it needs to be something in the range of an 8-10+ MPG difference before it is significant enough to impact my choices. Just my two cents.

Nah. If you read they specifically talk about coming to talk to them when they find out about the release. They are just using place holder pics so it's a fast edit when they get the go ahead.

I got 19mpg in my 2015 Tacoma. I could squeeze out 21-22 if I went exactly 70mph on the highway, but I personally can’t drive that slow. My tundra was 13-14mpg. So 5-6mpg difference between the two with my normal driving.
