Agreed. Non-northern people generally get upset when you say their trucks are too loud, and they get hurt. BC is better though! triggered.

I grew up in BC, so I enjoy both provinces. BC does have better fishing and better hunting, but has an insane cost of living and worse *that which shall not be discussed*.

Loos like another case of hurt web feelings between @Wallygator and @TundraLaw, one of them being seemingly very angry about a bunch of supposition on a truck that doesn't even exist yet. There are support groups for this situation if either of ya'll are interested.

As far as the new Tundra going the way of the Tacoma, I think the transmission they decide to use is just as important as the powerplant.
The Tacoma engine makes plenty of power, the big problem is that dumb electronic, non-sequential transmission that decides it should go from 1st to 4th gear when you're trying to get on the freeway. The computer decides to put it in way too high of a gear too soon and you lose all available torque when you really need it. Its not the motor that's lacking, its the transmission holding it back. I'm all for more gears in the new Tundra, as long as they don't use the same POS TCU as in the Taco.

For a good example of the Tacoma's poor transmission go watch the video of Matt's Off-Road Recovery where he tries to get a Taco out of a bowl. He makes several runs trying to get it out and the damn thing keeps shifting to 3rd or 4th gear right when he needs to put the power down in 2nd. The truck had plenty of power, it just decided to upshift at the exact wrong time, several times in a row. Dumb for a supposed off-road vehicle.

Great point on the transmission. It's the same thing when comparing the Tundra to the Ram 1500. Both 5.7's, both with tons of power. Put your foot to the floor and there's not much in them. But only go half throttle and the Ram just kills the Tundra. The computers in the Ram downshift if you even think about more throttle, the Tundra asks you if you're sure you want to downshift - and by the time it does this the 5.7 has overcome the lack of a downshift and now you're in the right gear. If the Tundra transmission was in a race car it would be infuriating, but it's not so it's manageable. I for sure prefer the Ram programming, and it's nice in iffy conditions since you don't have to give it extra throttle to downshift then suddenly you have more power to the rears than is ideal, it just goes down right as you want it.

The dumbest thing is you can apparently no longer get a DC LB with a manual transmission. Sounds like that would solve a lot of issues (other than sitting on the floor like you're in a 90s Civic.)

What would be ideal is an automatic with whatever number of gears and fuel saving mode they decide to program the TCU with for everyday use, then the option to go true manual shift mode so you can make the trans do what you want it to do, with paddle shifters on the steering wheel. The Tundra's current manual shift mode is not really true manual shift, but sorta helps in some situations. I don't mind the tech and nannies and whatnot, as long as I have the option to override them and take control back for certain situations.

It would be nice but seems unlikely, given that the other full size pickups have the same type of sequential shift system.

Speaking practically about the new Tundra, the first obvious change would be the TT V6 from the LS, but it requires premium fuel and will be shit for towing as all Turbos are. Their mileage drops quicker than the gloves of an ECHL defenseman (see what I did friends from Canada).

Another obvious change would be 8 or 10 speed transmission with 3.2ish gear like the competition from the big three. Again, it would be s*** for towing. Next, lighten the truck with aluminum and watch the Payload and Tow rating climb. But it will lose the stability of a 3 ton truck pulling and become a 2 1/2 ton truck pulling. Oh yeah, and make a small gas tank, back to 25 gallons, gain 100lbs (45ish kilos)of payload but lose the ability to travel 200 miles (300ish kilometers) at a clip when towing.

You will still Pay $75 to $100 to fill up in many states with the small tank, because of the premium fuel thing. Add a rear locker, which benefits less than a 1% niche of Raptor buyers, to a Tundra which is already a niche market. It makes no sense. Not many take a $60-$70k truck offroading. Most are more likely to just park it in the back of the parking lot in two parking spaces, because heaven forbid something scratch their pretty truck.

The fact is that the 5.7L with 4.30 gears that runs on regular fuel was so far ahead when Toyota released it back in 2007 that the only thing driving it's exodus is CAFE rules. I just got back from doing 1500 miles to South Florida and back to GA with my 6,500 lbs Lance Travel Trailer in tow. I was not over Payload, or GCVWR and averaged 9.63 mpg during my trip doing mostly 72mph on the interstate. That was hand calculated and filled up at the beginning and end of each stop to make sure that I didn't include any commuter miles. I filled up with Regular fuel, and didn't have to pay Premium or Diesel prices.

The only thing keeping me from updating my 2018 Platinum to a 2021 to get what may be the last of the 5.7 with 4.3 gears, is the lack of the trans cooler.

Why did Toyota drop the trans cooler the last three model years? IMO, it is to find out how many customers actually need it. They know the next gen will not be the towing bad-ass that the current model is. They want to get an estimate on what their customer base is really doing with their trucks. This will allow them to estimate the cost of warranty work associated with what they know will be an inferior towing vehicle.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I think if they had something that was golden, they wouldn't be keeping it a secret.

One GM fanboy pointed out that their 10 speed with 3.23s actually has a deeper 1st gear than the Tundra's 6 speed with 4.30s.

GM is the only manufacturer that doesn't offer at least 3.73 gears and at least a 30 gallon tank. One hopes Toyota is looking at the industry as a whole, not just at what GM is doing, though at least they still offer big NA V8s.

There's no guarantee that the new engine will need premium. I know for a fact my father in law doesn't put premium in his EcoBoost and he hasn't had any major issues with it in 10 years.

Rear locker is not a niche feature if you live somewhere that gets snow or leave the pavement occasionally.
