So if everybody on the forums said they wanted lower payloads and lower towing you think they would have done that ? I don’t believe any manufacturer producing a 1/2 truck is going to lower their payloads with any new models .

They're not reading here and taking it as gospel, if they did the V8 wouldn't be leaving. So if people start asking for dumb things (lower payload) they sure as hell won't pay attention to it. But if forums are asking for certain things that the engineers and accountants didn't think of, and they agree it can/should be added they will.

So here I come to muddy the waters a bit. LOL Was @ the local dealership the other day, and was inquiring as to what they were hearing about the 2022 Tundra.

What the service manager told me was:

    - 5.7L V8 - keeping for lower trim models
    - V6 TT - added for upper trim models

They ALSO mentioned that they would possibly be debuting a larger V8 for higher trim models. I personally think that would be awesome.

I also realize this is complete hearsay, but hey, it seems that's about 99% of the content in this thread anyways. LOL

My guess is also that they would keep the V8 as an option - some version of it, probably not the current version exactly like it is due to the known MPG issues, but an updated version (from Lexus per rumors) with a few extra gears in the transmission.
Ford sells a bunch of V6's but they will not get rid of the V8 option because there is a marked for that. At least for now.

V6-only will steer a good percentage of buyers to other brands and maybe the calculation is that a larger percentage will buy a Tundra because it has a TT V6.

I hope they change the cab to not slope down towards the rear, that look makes it look like same truck.

more importantly, I hope they don't rake the A pill quite so much o you dont have to bend your neck like Gumby to get in when your tall.

Dealerships have as much info as the general public does at this moment. Anything they say is speculation as well.

And I can promise you that Toyota is not making any decision off a forum of enthusiasts that represent a very small number of total sales.

We won’t know much until Toyota officially releases more info.

I'll believe it when I see it but that sounds cool. If Toyota can mange its carbon creds I could see the V8 sticking around, last I heard the V8 factory was being retooled and V8 development was shifting focus to nonV8 applications.

I get what you’re saying . I didn’t mean that as literally asking for lower payloads . However I’ve seen on this forum people saying they don’t want all the gadgets or tech but I’m guessing with the next gen there’s going to be lots of tech and a “bigger screen” .

Because if there isn't, the media will tell you what a piece of garbage the truck is and how you shouldn't buy it if it doesn't have all that crap, regardless of how reliable it is or how well it drives or does truck things.

Or the media become enamored with around town fuel mileage of the latest twin turbo, hybrid, micro-diesel, etc. that has a crappy rear gear ratio and requires premium fuel to get it's mileage numbers. So any gains in fuel economy are more than lost in increased fuel costs, depreciation, and maintenance costs, but they don't talk about that.

That's why I'm not excited at all about the potential of TT V6 from the LS (if reports are accurate, the motor going into the new Tundra). It requires premium fuel or it runs like crap.

Actually the media has never referred to the Tundra as garbage . They always say that the Tundra is reliable but it’s outdated considering that it hasn’t had any significant update in 14 years . I also think that Toyota has seen how much money they’ve lost with the Tundra because of that .
The F series is the number 1 selling vehicle in North America, the Ram is the number 2 selling vehicle in North America and the Silverado is the number 3 .
With the reliability of Toyota if they had offered the tech that the big 3 offered they probably would have a lot bigger market .

I think it has been more of a capacity issue for Toyota than anything else. While they are still #1 with the Camry in car sales and #1 with Tacoma in the mid-size pickup, is their a small pickup?, they don't have the capacity with the Tundra. But as we are seeing the changeover in America, smaller vehicles are not the trend, Ford isn't even making passenger cars anymore. More people are choosing full size pickups or SUVs as their daily commuter/ go anywhere vehicles. Shifting the Tacoma to Mexico will allow them to gradually increase their large vehicle (Tundra, Sequoia) capacity.

Not too many of us have been in a situation when we thought, "boy, wish I didn't have a full size pickup." Toyota probably recognizes that, even Ford and GM did.

Totally agree. Stealerships don’t know a damn thing. Arguably they know less, as their dummy bosses are feeding them water cooler gossip.

Toyota sold roughly 1,380,000 Tundras since the '07 was released and there are a hair more than 52k members on this forum. So, a hair less than 4% just using members from this site.

Put that against yearly sales, a bit less than 120k a year since 2014 model, then that 52k number of enthusiasts probably has a little more impact.

I'd say that's a pretty decent number of (visible/known/active) "enthusiasts", just on this site, vs total sales.

If they're not looking at the enthusiast market maybe they should.

And what about the 1st gens that might feel screwed by going huge?
The whole allure of the Tundra at first was the unique stature right between the tiny taco and the big boys.

I also do not think Toyota has much interest in what we think and they sell every one they make already.

I like how Ford has multiple engine options at almost all trim levels except Raptor and Limited. The 5.0 is what I would get and at 400/410 it puts out good power and MPG for a truck. They added cylinder deactivation for 2021 so I don’t know about that.

If Toyota added D4S (direct and port injection) to the 5.7 or retooled the 5.0 from the IS-F, it would be a very nice engine mated to an 8 or 10 speed. Then have the TT option as well.

But that 52k includes 1st gen and people who sold their tundra but stick around, or even non active people who sold their tundra and left but still have an account. However it also includes people who have bought more than 1 tundra which would raise the percentage. Either way, this site is a tiny fraction of tundra owners.

It would be nice to think Toyota has people monitoring forums for feedback, but I dont think it happens. It would be free market research for them. If they did you’d think they would have changed the gasket material for the cam tower and added an e locker years ago.

I really really doubt Toyota is monitoring any forums. The bitching and whining is toxic and it's not a good source of info for future products. They do, however, put out customer surveys and those they do listen to. That's why the Crewmax seats changed from slide and recline to fold up bottoms. They asked customers and got a resounding preference for the folding seats. Forums.... yeah impossible to please most people.

Besides, people on this forum already choose Toyota. Maybe they monitor the Ford forums for ideas.

I actually think they are very aware of this forum. Monitoring social media would be a very important feedback opportunity and it's free. Sending out surveys cost money. It's just one tool of many used to gauge the market.
