Does anyone think the copper/bronze wheels will be on the Tundra or was that for the TACO or 4RUNNER?

I hope the bronze is available. But the pic I posted was of a new, upcoming trim of the 22 Tacoma.

We won't know until Toyota shares those details

My current truck also has a system called ABLS, it tries to use the ABS system to clamp down the spinning wheel. The truck still benefitted from a rear locker being retrofitted a few years back. Whereas the ABLS would wait for slip to happen, then attempt to reduce it, the rear locker never allows that initial slip, which really helps on sketchy surfaces. I probably push my full size truck harder than the typical Toyota owner, but I really value lockers over computers (although computers are nice in their own ways). If I buy a Tundra, it will immediately be put to work, no wax jobs and tire dressing, it's going to be pushing down small trees and getting drug over logs and boulders. Some may think lockers are unnecessary, I think big grilles, panoramic roofs and leather is unnecessary.

TFL made a great point about the possibility of triple locked Tundra: in a world of upcoming EV trucks, traditional ICE trucks are going to bring their A-game. Being cheap, thrifty and tricky with ABS programming won't cut it in a marketplace soon to be joined by EV trucks that can do "tank mode", let alone the fact every current mid and full size truck offers lockers.

Agree. Never understood having a sunroof on a truck. No thank you

The most insightful commentary here is that Toyota is a day late and a dollar short.

Andre was 10000% correct when he pointed out the truck should have been released a year or two ago.

precisely. Now the new tundra is just a rip off of the domestics without any new ideas. The roof speakers (Ford and Ram), HU (2017 Lexus IS), stying (2019 GMC Sierra), moonroof (f150), engine 3.5 and hybrid (Ford), coil springs (Ram). lol. But I'm sure it'll sell because fanboys pay a premium due to marketing that Toyota pushes {Groundbreaking! World beater!}.

I hear you. I’m not going to complain if it does have factory lockers. I push my truck (and I pushed my old 4Runner) harder than the average Toyota owner, too. In my experience, Toyota’s ATRAC operates at a level that is way beyond anyone else’s computer controlled traction system. I just did Imogene pass last week. Crawled right up slick, loose rocks in torrential rain and a bit of hail. ATRAC activated a few times. It reacts so fast to the slightest wheel spin. I never felt out of control. It just slowly, calmly crawled up the mountain, up 10” shelves and off camber situations in heavy rain with zero drama and no rear end sliding.

I’m not accusing you of this, but I think a lot of people are turned off by the lack of a real locker in the Tundra and don't get out and actually experience the way it handles itself in 4Lo with ATRAC on. I think they’d be very pleasantly surprised.

We will have to see the actual specifics and observe the results in the real world with the new Tundra.

If the wild rumor of a hybrid putting out 480hp and 642lb-ft pans out, and it has Toyota reliability/durability then the hype will be backed up with some authority.

Problem is, as you point out, they’re not going to be first to market with any of it and that is not ideal from a marketing standpoint. It will probably be a good truck, hell I will probably buy one in a year or two, but the marketing excitement will wear off fast if there’s nothing really innovative or impressive.

Toyota better crush it given how much time they’ve taken to bring this new truck to market. Unfortunately what I have observed with the Land Cruiser 300 reveal is a product that I would love to own, but that doesn’t excite me or anyone else. It’s all a bunch of stuff other manufacturers are already doing, nothing new, nothing outstanding or ground breaking. Mostly just a bunch of hardware improvements that you look at and say “Well it’s about damn time Toyota.”

It doesn't have to be new if they do it better. Not saying they will, or won't, but it doesn't have to be groundbreaking to be better.

My complaint with the lack of a rear locker, or a real LSD is winter driving performance. Unless the truck is in 4X4 it is utterly useless.

This is why I want an AWD option.

LSD rwd is actually more sketchy in winter, if both of your back wheels end up spinning, the back end can kick out very quickly. Good traction control reduces how badly it kicks out, but it is one benefit to an open differential: at least one wheel has lateral traction since it's not spinning.

I like the 4x4 system in the Sequoia. In 4H, it is like 4A in a Ford with the center diff unlocked. Then you can lock the center diff if you choose. I would like a locking rear axle option though.

I enjoy power-slides most of the time.

A true AWD option with a Torsen center diff with a locker? Like a Land Cruiser….. on a Tundra?

    Yes take my money.

Unfortunately Toyota North America just read that as: The customers would like open differentials, and only want RWD. We can save money and maximize shareholder profits by eliminating 4X4 drive systems completely.

Also we infer that the customers want all trim, bumpers, grilles, mirrors, wheels, and door handles to be finished in chrome. Everything is chrome in the future.

A-TRAC is the best type of ABLS system I'm aware of.

To be honest, I never got stuck with my truck's ABLS system, I do use good tires for off-roading, and that's the other important part of the puzzle. Even without the rear locker, I never had an issue tagging along with my friends in their Jeeps.

It cost $2300 to have a locker installed, and it was totally worth it. Even though I never got stuck before. I know people who spend thousands on fancy doodads for their vehicles that are too nice to get scratched.

Anyways, hopefully people who only need A-TRAC can get a Tundra with that. I'll gladly pay extra for lockers from the factory. Hopefully that doesn't mean I'll need to buy a trim that has a bunch of expensive crap I don't want, or is limited to a 5.5' bed.
If I had to settle for A-TRAC to get a 6.5' bed, I'd certainly choose the longer bed over lockers.

I'd love for the Tundra to get the same off road goodies that the 4Runner Off Road and older Trail versions had, even if it was only in the Offroad and Trail packages/trims. The A-TRAC system in them is impressive, and they have a locking rear diff. It would just be nice if the Off Road sticker on the truck meant more than mildly improved shocks and LED headlights is all.

This is a similar situation on the Nissan side, the Armada has AWD/4H Auto, but the Titan doesn't. My Titan is a mess in the winter in 2WD. Back end always kicking out. If I put it in 4HI, I usually forget, then I'll get into a clear parking lot and realize my truck is binding, then it's a hassle for the system to disengage....it doesn't do it while it's bound up.

AWD option on a Tundra would be even more useful than lockers. All of my friends have Ford's and GMs with AWD, don't understand the issue with Japanese manufacturers

I will hapily take another truck with LSD for winter driving. I have never had a problem with the rear end kicking out badly enough to caus problems and when I’m in 4 wheel drive it allows me to have 3 wheels spinning instead of 2. The added traction of LSD has helped me in many instances.

Difference for me is that the 4Runner doesn't have auto 4wd or AWD. Hell, theirs is still a manual stick to put into 4x4. I don't want it all auto-ed out, but I would like the A-TRAC with the crawl/off road settings they have and their locking diff. I am totally fine with having to remember to take it out of 4x4.

Most trucks don't have LSD because LSD is usually clutch based, and is a maintenance hassle on a truck. Even on cars with LSD, it's not uncommon for the clutch packs to be spent by 60k miles and require replacement. A HLSD like Eaton TruTrac is more appropriate for a truck. The only truck I know of that has that is the Raptor. GM has the G80 which is more of an auto locker.

I am in the same position. Looking to see what the specs are on a 22 or maybe wait one year and buy a 23 if it has more payload.

My preference for a locker is an electronic locker, just make it lockable in 2WD, 4 HI, and 4 LO.

I still want a full time Torsen center diff for full time AWD. At least the option of one.

That one I've never understood. I've never needed a locker at any kind of speed, so only using it in 4-lo would be ok for me. I realize different needs for different people, but I still see no scenario where I would need a locker at speed. :notsure:

Ah, well I prefer to keep it shiny side up, as my Tundra is my only vehicle. I have to be able to drive it home after any fun! I see some of the stuff guys on this forum (Tundras to Sedona) and it looks like a great time, but I can't be busting up my only means of transportation.

Sometimes I want one if I forget to shift into 4Hi when coming to a stop on an icy street in my neighbourhood. Don't really want to risk crashing into a parked car because I had to rev things up to 2000 rpm to get ATRAC to kick in.

If I can’t drive up the street sideways rooster-tailing snow in the winter then I’m not happy. So I “need” that locker to be available in 2WD, and 4HI.

Only downside is I am guessing you have to be stopped to engage or disengage a locking differential?
