What's the cons for a plug in? I probably have it wrong but I thought that would give you 30-40 miles on electric then gas kicks in for long distance. If you were always taken 100+ mile commutes would the hybrid get better overall mpg?

Yah, you're correct. I think people just don't want to be inconvenienced by having to plug it in, and would rather have their engine charge the battery.

Here where I live, and probably very similar in the rest of USA, vehicles like old Expeditions, Navigators, Tahoes, etc are cheap, plentiful, and appear to be a status symbol to drugged-out flat-billers with no car insurance. I work for a DOT, and I can assure you I see $3K 6K+ pound older domestic SUVs involved in too many fatalities.

I've seen what an Expedition, driven by a meth-head at 90+mph can do to a modern Toyota Camry (kill all 4 people in the Camry) and that particular story is what motivated me to buy my first full-size truck 12 years ago...to protect my family and myself. My current truck did better than the Tundra at the time, but the real goal was matching mass.

Anyways, it's not an uncommon thing for a meth-head to come over the center line at you, I would very much so appreciate it if Toyota puts effort into acing these tests.

I wouldn't buy a "Hybrid" truck. I'll stick with a normal gas engine setup if only a Hybrid is available.
I would definitely be interested in a PHEV truck that had similar stats as the new RAV4 Prime. Being able to plug-in and drive moderate ranges is very appealing to me.

The con for a plug-in would be less payload due to the larger battery required for decent electric only range. Other than that, it’s great if you take short trips and plug it in every night. However, once you load up and haul or tow for any distance, then the larger battery becomes dead weight. I’m hoping for a regular hybrid, myself. Sacrifice a little capability for decent mpg, but not so much that it doesn’t improve upon the current generation.

Wouldn't a hybrid, with a heavy battery help you reach your goal of "matching mass"?

My comment was more tongue in cheek, since toyota won’t be doing anything crazy, new or “world beating” they will probably be #1 in some very narrow category that requires an (*)

like best in class *hybrid hp

    best in class *hybrid payload

    Best in class *hybrid towing

Point being that they’re not topping the current 700hp/6xxflbs that is class leading power, but they probably will have the highest power hybrid power train, they’re not topping fords 3klbs payload, but they might beat fords powerboost payload & towing numbers.

No I can’t, but I can probably tell you a couple thousand combinations it won’t be. We all know toyota, they’re going to make an average truck with outstanding reliability save for a few minor issues that will be worked out in a few years. It will be right around the top of the current pack of half tons so it can stay relative and competitive for a decade.

Does the plug in hybrid not still work like a regular hybrid where it recharges with regenerative braking and such?

It does not, it only charges via being plugged in.
I was wrong, I've been corrected multiple times - Thank you everyone for your kind corrections. Plug in hybrids do have regenerative braking.

Lets all come together and just wait till the final release is made by Toyota, then we can spend hundreds of pages either ripping it, or loving it,... ah, great times ahead for sure.:yay:

I didn't know that. I always just thought it was kind of a super hybrid. So I guess that means that after the battery goes dead on a long trip, you no longer have that rumored 642 lbs of torque?

The PHEV, with even larger battery pack, would be better.

As far as I know, the Rav4 Prime has the option of being operated as a self-charging hybrid.

Yah, I had to read up on it to answer your question. I also thought it would just switch into a normal hybrid mode once the battery depletes to a certain level.

You are implying that a PHEV doesn't have regen braking. That is wrong.
PHEVs, such as a Rav4 Prime, do have regen braking. The Rav4 Prime can maintain a 80% charge on the battery pack through regen alone. As that one person said, they are "super hybrids" in essence.

    Hate? Nah, more like pity.

Spent time there because I had to. A lot of stuff to like, but for my tastes more stuff I didn’t care for. In the late 90’s when I was there it was tolerable, by the mid 2000’s when I was last in the area the state seemed to be sliding downhill in a lot of ways. More crowded, more traffic, worse roads, seemed like a lower quality of life.

Hopefully it has improved since then, but as an outsider looking in it does not appear that way.

I am cautiously optimistic that the 2022 Tundra will enjoy significantly superior braking performance with a heavy payload or trailer with the addition of regenerative braking on the hybrid.

Same concept as dynamic braking on a locomotive, use the traction motors to retard motion, in our case in the rail industry that energy ends up the dynamic braking grids converted into heat that is bled off into the atmosphere. Makes a big difference on how often and how hard the air brakes need to be used.

The downside is it can be another failure point, eventually the dynamic grids go out. Usually they melt or blow up. Really fun to look in the mirror and see molten steel being blown out like rain drops by the blower fan over the grids. Pretty neat sight at night. Then they catch on fire.

New adjustable tie downs just released from the competition, still unsure if we can compete with this in 22. :(

All I know is that I've lived here my whole life, I've traveled the world, and I still love living here. There's a lot of misinformation about what it's really like to live in California, and I'm okay with that; keeps people away.
