I understand the guy from SoCal not caring about this but the guy from Wyoming?

Surely I can't be the only person in the world who loves music but has cold hands...

My touch screen works with my gloves. Or I can use the corner of my phone case. Or you can keep a link sausage in your truck for it. That's what the Russians do in Siberia for touch screens.

I can work the screen in my wife's Corolla with my gloves on but the one in my truck is a no go for some reason.

I’m also not unreasonable with mpgs either. My tundra did very well up to 65k miles. After replacing the front differential/wheel bearing under warranty, if I could get 14-15 mpg on the highway, I was lucky. Before 18-19 was common. That’s totally acceptable in my opinion for a truck.

I will share right in the open. The solenoid valve(s) in the oil pan failed, ground down some lobes on the camshaft do to oiling, and sent hardened metal through the engine.

This is why I would never buy a AT4 1500 truck. 3/4 ton 6.6L gasser..you betcha (Scandinavian ancestors coming out there).

From what I have been hearing, the 3/4 ton gas powered trucks have been doing pretty good on the efficiency battle.

Much appreciated. So both were 1500 GM trucks?

Yes. Both 2009 trucks. One had 101k and the other had 109k miles...5.3L.

I really don’t know anyone with hemi motors in trucks. My boss just purchased a 2020 Ram 1500 with the hemi. Nice truck. See how it lasts.

3,434 miles on mine as of today. Averaged 13.6 in mixed driving verified with Fuelly. My computer says 13.1 over the 3,434 miles. This is including towing a 6,500 lb. trailer every weekend. On the highway, I have got a best of 17.6 on a 50-mile trip. I am going to be conservative and say 15.5 on the highway, but I am seeing North of that driving smart and staying 65-75 MPH with littel wind and relatively flat roads. The 6.6 is really quite, super smooth, and for gas pulls like a champion. When hooked to a trailer, I am seeing better mileage when towing then with the Tundra.....

I have 59K miles on my truck that I purchased 3/1/2018. So about 22k per year(+/-) depending on amount of travel. About 8k per year is towing.

For the capacity and size...not bad at all.

Some people really are not concerned with overall fuel economy. Take @NewImprovedRon...does his 2014 have 25k miles on it yet?

Haha, this is 'Merica! We do everything over the top! Land of the free, home of the brave! I drive 20-25k miles a year and that is why I work my rear off to afford things like this! I averaged 2 more MPG with the Tundra, not a monumental amount of fuel cost added over a year. insurance is less in the Chevy for whatever reason, so I will call it a wash!

Honestly, I'd take that body style if it were from Toyota and it meant I got the payload and towing with a V8. Function over form, to a certain degree.

I agree with the Tundra payload, for reference I was looking at 2500HD High Country/Denali Duramax's and they all were around ~3k payload. Reason why the gas and Diesels have the same payload is due to GM increasing the 3/4 GVWR past the traditional 10,000 GVWR. If you look at a 3/4 F-250 or Ram 2500 Diesel, the payload will be in the ~1.5-2k due to 10k GVWR restriction.

Here's a HC and Denali I looked at:

    20190719_171919.thumb.jpg.270d2d6c303ade5c4fecf39d2a254a41.jpg

As you can see, if these were limited to the traditional 10,000 GVWR, the payload would be ~1,700 pounds.

I admit I actually sort of agree. I did not hate it, but it was my least favorite part of the truck also. I test drove Ford and Ram also and combined price, drivability, features the Chevy won pretty easily.

The funny thing, is we must be in minority in owning Tundras as about 90% of truck buyers seem to like and value different stuff than Tundra owners. They all walk into the dealer and buy trucks with the most features and whatever looks the coolest, so Toyota suffers from that standpoint. I have 3 uncles that are diehard Ford's, you ask them what engine is in it and they say EcoBoost. Can't tell you 2.7 or 3.5. They just bought it due to advertising or it was the cool thing.

I said this in another thread, but I have gotten more compliments on the 2500HD in a month, than the Tundra in 2 years. I have people all the time at gas stations, car wash, soccer games stop and say how that is the best looking Chevy truck in many years and love the front end of it. I wish I was lying...... Dealers are saying it is the best selling HD's they have had and even pre-covid the demand is up for them.

We really must be the odd alls to buy and drive Tundras!

    Seen that:eek2:

I just don’t know anyone close to me that has a hemi powered truck for extended periods of time.

When I went to buy a PW in 07 (or whenever it was) I took two separate test drives west of Denver, CO up Floyd Hill. Both times I chewed 1/4 tank of fuel empty. :eek2: I just couldn’t afford to DD that truck. Only other experience with hemi powered trucks is friends of friends. My BILs neighbor has put two 5.7L engines in his truck at 158k miles. No thanks.

@Midmo_tundra pointed out a very important point though - the new GM 2500's if you want those payload ratings are actually in the 1 ton class. This is crucially important. For myself I'd be looking at a 1 ton since where I am I don't have to worry about issues with 10k lb+ inspections and whatnot, but those who use it for work this could be a non starter. Take comparing Alberta to BC, in Alberta most welders get 1 tons for their rigs, but in BC they get 3/4 tons. Why? In BC any commercial vehicle with a GVWR of 10k+ has to stop at weigh scales, and with that comes inspections. So by buying 3/4 tons (8501 - 9999 lb GVWR trucks) they can bypass the scales and not worry about inspections. So in reality if you get a GM 2500 with full capability you are in fact by legal definitions buying a 1 ton truck, and with that can come additional headaches.

This was the point I was trying to make. Some States, depending on your business, would require DOT numbers/stickers on the 2020+ 3/4 ton GM’s.

If GM followed the 10,000 GVWR, the trucks I looked at would only have 1,700lbs of payload. But since they increased the GVWR, they have the highest payload in the “3/4 ton” segment. Everyone else is still using 10k GVWR for 3/4 ton.

If Toyota is going to increase the next gen Tundra payload, they’ll have to loose a bunch of weight or increase the GVWR like GM did on their 2020+ HD trucks.

It's not as bad for the Tundra. Even at their current weight they can have a payload of ~2900 lbs and still be in the half ton class. Side note - why haven't any manufacturer used all of this space? So rough guessing would put the weight of the non-hybrid Tundra in the 4500-5000 lb range, which allows for a payload of 3500-4000 lbs and still be a half ton. Have to add 500 lbs for the hybrid batteries to the curb weight. So the Tundra could not lose a pound and still trounce the most sold combinations for the big 3 in payload.

One neighbors had a 2500 with the 6.4 hemi and put 170,000 miles on it in 4 years with zero issues. Then my 6.4 I had went in the shop within 1 week of buying. Guess it’s the luck of the draw

Right as long as it’s under 8,500 GVWR it’s still a half ton. I bet Toyota pushes that GVWR to gain the payload without losing weight to get higher payload across the board.

Im with you man, I had the heated wheel on my 2013 Ram Sport. it was really really nice in the winter which in northern Illinois gets pretty rough at times.

that and Toyota really really needs to learn how to make a vented seat work, mine dont do shit at all never have. The ones in my ram worked awesome.

some of these creature comforts matter when your talking top of the line like my platinum tundra.

Hemis just suck the fuel back. The Woman had a 2009 Ram 1500 with the 5.7L Hemi when we first got together. She was averaging an honest, hand calculated 7 - 8 mpg daily driving. On a highway road trip, it'd creep up to about 10mpg. She now owns a Corolla.

I don't remember what gearing she had. All I know is that truck got the worst fuel economy out of every truck we've owned. I grudgingly admit my flaming pile of shit 2013 F150 with the 5.0L V8 was really good on fuel. My 2011 GMC Sierra 1500 with the 5.3L was decent and my 2005 Tundra with the 4.7L V8 is very close to what the Sierra was, but not quite.

I promise it is not. I will take a picture of the stickers in my truck. I misspoke a little later and after the factory add ons of bedliner and tube steps, my payload is 3,465. I will take pictures of door jamb stickers in a little while.

Truck has GVWR of 10,650. Curb weight of 7,185. We have scales where I work certified to accurate to 15 pounds. I weighed the truck with me in it and it came in at 7,450 pounds. With me in it I have exactly 3,200 of payload left over. Payload is 4x what my stock Tundra is. Unfortunately, it is what it is and puts me in a much safer towing environment with wife, 2 kids, and a travel trailer purchase in next couple weeks for family Christmas.

We had a 2003 1500 with the 4.7(or whatever was the smallest V8) at work. 3 transmissions under 55k miles, fuel economy was lucky to be 14 mpg, and then the payload was over with a 100 gallon aux fuel tank in the bed. That had to be the single worse truck I have ever had the pleasure to drive or own.
