    Oh wow, 472hp out of a 5.0L.

How many years has Ford been doing that already with theirs? I’m sure the Lexus mill is very nice, but they’re bragging up something that is not particularly impressive.

September release with a December delivery to dealers sounds like the automotive market equivalent of a 17:00 Friday afternoon Washington DC press release.

It’s what you do when the news being conveyed isn’t as flattering as you’d hoped.

They're a month ahead on the CUV. What was the all new crossover last fall? Corolla Cross?

Maybe they will have a diesel option?!?! Ha that’s worth the wait.

They are stating it will dominate!

    Right. Forgot about that one.

Is something that was discontinued less than 10 years ago "all new"?

    Not really.

The old one was a flop, the new one looks similarly unappealing.

A ttv6 hybrid doesn't dominate either. What features would cover the majority of half ton owners wants? A smooth riding truck that lasts forever, gets 25mpg on the Hwy, and has enough ass to pull 12k pounds.

The ride and towing/payload is doable as proven with the big 3 coil spring rears.
Last forever and good mileage is the trick. V8 won't get good mileage but can be built to last. Turbo'd 6's only get decent mileage if you stay out of boost and won't last as long by design. Turbo 4's in a truck are a joke. Hybrid helps the mpg, hurts the payload and towing with hauling electric motors and batteries around.
Only engine option that can do all of those is a diesel. Will it have the get up and go of a ttv6 or a v8? No. But mid to upper 20's on the hwy? Yep, have towing power? Yep. Last pretty much forever if built right? Yup.
GM is selling a ton of those little duramax engines for a reason. If they really think they can dominate the 1/2 ton market without a diesel option that matches or beats the 3.0 they're blind.

If Toyota brought a really powerful diesel to the 1/2 ton segment that was made to work that would be noteworthy. They will not do that so, don’t save your money to buy one.

They are going to have a standard 3.5L TT V6 and 10 speed. It will make 410hp, and 480lb-ft so they can make commercials about best in class standard power and torque. The top dog hybrid will at least match the Ford equivalent. Then Toyota won’t change Jack or shit for the next 10-15 years, and literally next year all the major players in the 1/2 ton market will exceed all of Toyota’s figures. That’s just how competitive the segment is and Toyota doesn’t seem to know how to play.

diesel isn't happening with Toyota Tundra, it just isn't. Sweers has bolted the door shut on that long ago.

its well documented from sweers himself, they just don't see the value to the customer with a diesel.

    he's said that for years.

Yep, this is why I am in the Tundra. After 30 years in a Jeep SUV (Cherokee, Grand Cherokee, Commander) I Planned a Jeep Truck. They took too long to come to market, I wanted a Truck in 2017 as the Commander had 200K on it. Jeep Gladiator was 2 years later.

I almost bought a Gladiator when the prices dropped, talked a dealer into an overnight test drive, made an outrageous offer, they refused I drove away. Funny thing happened though, because after 12 hours in the Jeep, though I liked it, and would have been happy in it. When I got back in my Tundra, I immediately realized I was happy they didn't take my offer.

6 months later the dealer called me to tell me they would take my offer (which was basically trade my paid off 2017 TRD PRO for the Gladiator Rubicon and only pay tax and tag).... He was not happy when I said sorry, not interested.

Swears has said previously Toyota has no interest in bringing a diesel to the table, they said it was counter productive because of all the US regulations that are imposed on them.

Nissan no longer does a diesel because the 5.0L Cummins was a pile of crap and they cleverly stuck it in a heavy duty 1/2 ton that weighed as much as a real 3/4 ton. Unreliable and slow is a bad combo.

No one buys the 3.0L Ford diesel because it sucks a bag dicks and is an also ran in the class.

Ram buyers buy the FIAT VM Motori diesel because they’re gullible morons who are buying a bad unreliable truck anyway.

That leaves the GM 3.0L Duramax. By most accounts I’ve seen it’s a legitimately good engine as far as power delivery, smoothness, and fuel economy. Seems like it tows reasonably well too. GM got it right, and owns the 1/2 ton diesel market.

Toyota just isn’t going to play in it, they chatted their path for the current Tundra probably 10 years ago. Like most Japanese organizations they don’t deviate from their plans once in motion, regardless of reality on the ground.

The baby Duramax inline six is the best of the three. Toyota has been very clear their direction is fuel economy and hybrid systems transitioning to all electric.

No V8 or diesels fit that.
