I thought the whole Space Shuttle thing was a pretty big publicity stunt , same as Ford with the freight train .

You guys know that you can build a con rod, crank, piston to handle higher stress right?

All the talk of higher stress on the TTV6...as long as the bottom end is built well then it's a non issue.

Take the 2GR-FKS, for example. Non turbo V6. Well I've pushed 20+psi through it and made 600 ft lbs of torque with 11.8:1 CR. Didn't blow up because the engine is well overbuilt.

That’s what I don’t get. Within 15yrs, where is all the electricity going to come from to charge the batteries.

When Honda launched turbo engine in Accord and CRV, all the reviewers were complaining about how Toyota still NA engines. I think there was an interview from one of the chief designers from Toyota referring to how forced induction engines have reliability issues. Toyota was not ready to launch turbo engine till they solve the reliability aspect of the turbo engines.
If they are launching twin TT , I guess they must have done their homework.

If they haven't got their homework done by now on it I seriously question if they're worth buying. I'm sure they know what can be guaranteed to work and last, but it's about finding how close they can cut it that takes the most testing. Ford jumped early and many customers ended up finding what was too much cutting for them - Toyota has a history of getting 99% there so very few have failures for customers and if there's a systematic failure they fix it.

That’s what it was intended to be. My father worked for the program and they knew the shuttle had to be transported by land so they put a RFP out for bids on the honor. The domestic 3 all tried for it but Toyota came out on top.

Overbuilt is what I’m hoping for, and seems to be Toyota’s typical default setting when it comes to engines and drive lines.

I’m just butt hurt that the V8 option is going away, and that the 6 cylinder in question to replace the V8 is not an inline 6. If it were an inline 6 I’d be giddy to be honest.

Dammit Toyota: just because you have an engine getting better fuel efficiency doesn’t mean consumers want a smaller fuel tank.

Also, why again are we not allowed to get that new diesel here in North America? I mean it’s not as if GM and Ram are having any trouble at all selling 1/2 ton trucks, and soon to be SUV’s with diesels. In fact the GM diesel seems to fly off dealer lots. Here Toyota is with a complete animal of a 3.3L 6 cylinder diesel that would immediately be best in class.... and yet North American market can go F itself.

Been lurking on this thread for 6 months now.
I have been very interested in the upcoming Tundra.
Personally, I haven't had too much concern about Toyota using a TTV6, until I saw this video the other day: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MU40rb8P1Zk
It was mentioned that a Lexus tech said (totally hearsay, I know) this engine is ridiculously complicated, basically an engine-out type of design. Ugh... maybe in the LC300 and new Tundra there'll be enough room in the engine bay to avoid that kind of hassle.

I read that article. I think the point was more speaking to the old engineering adage of KISS, “keep it simple stupid”. Adding more complexity is a disadvantage to reliability simply because it adds more failure points.

The engine is ridiculously complicated. That is true.
everything is electric and controlled by the PCM.
twin / individual throttlebodies. Each independent control for each bank.
    Twin MAF sensors
electronically controlled wastegates, that use a similar method of control as the VR30 (nissan). A strategy of Open to close, not close to open.
Electronically controlled thermostat*(need to verify but 99% sure)
Electronically controlled oil pressure regulator (similar to TNGA Dynamic force M20A/M25A)

The camshaft VVTi control is so stupid complex I can't even explain it here. But basically Advance / retard (basic stuff) + Atkinson operation + Low / High Load operation + Valve Angle limit on intake per exhaust degree and vice versa.

and the ignition strategy is probably complex enough to require AI to understand.

    I think I do.

Ahem. Forced Induction is when you cause a material to be induced into a system under force, ie earf's atmosphere, semen, whathaveyou.

If I sit down with you in a food distribution center for a meal, at high noon local tyme, and you pick up the check... I will has teh "free-est of all luncheons".

Curious why a Chevy is no way but a GMC is meh? They're the same truck. Different styling but the Chevy has so many options there's bound to be a style that looks good to you.

Definitely going to let the new generation work the bugs out. I would like to keep my 2019 for 6 more years until my boy turns 16, then let him inherit a bada$$ Tundra while I get a 2027-2028 model Tundra :)

The GMC HD's are the best looking out there, but the Chevy HD's with the bowtie look very good too. On the 1/2 tons though I prefer the bowtie Chevy's over the GMC. Don't know why but usually one looks better as a half ton and the other better as an HD - previous generation it was flipped and GMC were better half tons and Chevy were the best HD.

One alphabet agency for you: EPA. They've strangle diesels pretty hard and DEF has affected reliability. Toyota isn't going to put a diesel out in the States. Same reason manual transmissions are on the way out, paint is thin, and everything is being made out of aluminum or plastic.

Perfectly happy with my '07 after all of the upgrades I've done. It's basically a new truck with ZERO car payment and low property tax. Buying a new 2022 SeaRay SPX230 instead.

Killed. Not killing. The MPG requirements are the cause. As Automatics/CVTs have gotten more efficient they are finally able to provide better MPGs than the manual transmissions. Because automakers are forced into tighter and tighter regulations they are eliminating the slightly less fuel efficient options.

Look at what comes with a manual trans these days. Used to be the "standard" transmission, but now they are only in a select few specialized vehicles. Cars for driving enthusiasts are some of the last hold outs, but even those are starting to push the autos and paddle shifters. Look at the Supra. Tell me it wouldn't be more popular with a third pedal in it.

Shows that what's popular isn't always the best. Semi auto transmissions shift faster than any person can do. It's about feeling better, not having a better vehicle.

If other 1st world markets that will get that engine weren’t doing the same thing I’d see your point. European regulations are just as stringent, and my guess is Japanese regulations are too.

Lots of European cars aren't sold here. It's not JUST emissions. It's the vehicle as a whole. Saftey standards, emissions, etc. Hell, they have to have different headlights to be sole in the US.
