You’re talking to a guy with a 2007 Tundra Limited. I can tell you that materials have been durable but were never particularly appealing or what I’d call quality.

Since it's pretty much "confirmed" V6TT...I can show you guys the inside of the ECU if you want to know ahead of time.
I still have a set of the turbos from the V35 sitting in my garage. So we can have some bolt on bigger turbos when this truck comes out

well it wouldn't really be a fair comparison to compare a EB Raptor (much newer) to an old tundra.

I'm saying brand new EB Raptor vs Tundra. Interior wise

Bigger turbos, bigger intercooler(s), bigger injectors, and an ecu flash, and we’ll be eating tires for breakfast!

For a stock truck flash, I don't see why not. It will be developed on our 2022 Tundra, tested, beaten to death, taken to hell and back before we release it.

We won't really be making much of tunes though. Just offering tuning support in our tuning software.

Flash, downpipes, full exhaust will net very big gains.

The intercoolers are water to air and molded into the intake system. Upgrading that will be a challenge.

It’s been years since my turbo car days, sounds like I’ll be learning some things over again with today’s technology!

Full exhaust is a must regardless of whether there are a couple spooly bois under the hood :burnrubber:

I wanted to like this but the only Ford engine I would describe as "great" is the old 300 I6. GM on the other hand...

Know how much real world impact those numbers do? None. Half ton engines reached a point about a decade ago that they have TONS of power to do what they need to - look at TFL's F150 towing up the Ike tests, the 5.0, 3.5, and 3.5 hybrid do the exact same time and fuel economy. 400 400 is more than enough for a half ton. All those extra power numbers are for are for brochures.

Agreed about an I6 turbo, would much rather have that than a V6 turbo. I've seen a few Ford V6TT's and that is one busy tangle of hoses, wire harnesses and tubes crammed into the engine bay.

Your post above about Toyota North America marketing was spot on IMO. The Sienna is a good example because it could have been a versatile platform for contractors instead of just a passenger van.

Seems like Toyota is trying to get a bigger market share in the 1/2 ton and jumbo SUV segment. The Sequoia we just bought was way ahead of the segment (in 2012 or so) by having full-time 4WD, independent rear suspension, massive cargo room. But Toyota built only apx 13,000 of them per year since 2009 Toyota Sequoia Sales Figures | GCBC (goodcarbadcar.net)

I'm guessing Toyota wants to get more market share for the Tundra and Sequoia, maybe the Sienna also, by shifting production from Indiana to Texas for the Sequoia and Indiana focuses on the Sienna.

Myself, I wonder which will wear out first - me, the '08 4Runner or the '19 Sequoia. I love Toyota's stodgy old just keep grinding along philosophy but I would like to upgrade to a hybrid Sequoia in a few years. The '19 is a thirsty beast in Colorado, high altitude kills fuel mileage even with a turbo. Turbo Fords get barely better fuel mileage at high altitude compared to a V8, as soon as you get into boost fuel mileage drops dramatically.

Not to take away from TFL but they observe a fairly low posted speed limit. I would be interested to see what all of those trucks could do with 70mph par speed.

Yeah the old work truck special. That is probably one of the toughest gas engines of all time. Mostly driven by guys that don’t own the truck and give zero chits if they blow it up.

    Lol you’re not wrong!
I had a 95 blazer with “unknown miles” on it when I bought it. I must’ve put another 100k on it in my ownership and all I did was change the oil and replace the valve seals. Sold it running like a top with what I’m guessing was about 300k on the engine.

They also said how the 5.0 was tapped out, and that the EcoBoost had a bunch of power to spare while holding at lower RPM / higher gear.

Other than getting into the ECU, disassembling the tables and understanding the logic of how the calibration works for the engine, we never offered a tune for the LS500. Most people who purchase that land yacht are not interested in tuning whatsoever.

(don't get me wrong. The LS500 is a beauty. But the people who buy them don't mod them other than wheels, if that).

We actually did all of that work 2 years ago because that is when we found out what was coming in the 2022 Tundra.

I should really update that blog. There is so, so much more inside that ECU than the blog lets on.

That’s a shame, the LS500 would be more compelling with about 500 hp or so given how heavy the car is.

Then again I suffer from adult juvenile delinquency syndrome, and it has manifested in my current family car being a 4 door with RWD and an LS3... in a location that sees plenty of snow in the winter. Still more horsepower and torque (well more accurately more torque across the operating range) makes everything better.

Car or truck? More power will make it better.

Freight train? I can tell you from experience more power is better.

Lawnmower? Yep sign me up for more power.

Paperweight on my desk? Well I don’t know how it will make it hold down papers any better, but if you can give that paperweight more power I’m probably interested.

Why no one started an actual Binford Tool Company making absurdly over powered power tools is beyond me.

Can't argue with more power, but from Toyota's side why bother going crazy on power when 400 400 does what is required and they can focus on making a 2 million mile engine

Because lots and lots of dumb dumbs buy trucks with way more power than needed, and only a literal handful of buyers will ever drive a pickup truck much beyond 250K miles.

Toyota is in business to make money right?

What if they made an engine that could do crazy miles stock, but through some smaller mods/tune and it pushes huge numbers? Would that not be a win win? For the mass market version the smart play is to go after fuel mileage, and lower power helps that; for the specialty one crank up the power and charge a premium.

Just reminds me of the diesel torque wars, driving a 1 ton max payload and 800 lb ft was gobs of power, switched to a 2017 with 925 lb ft and what was the difference? Nothing. At that point it's just a number for the brochures. And the number that's going to sell more half tons is not HP, it's MPG. So you're most likely going to see a decent power engine with very good fuel mileage, that will make them the most money.

Thats why I stopped waiting for the next gen and bough a domestic diesel. I knew no matter how good the new tundra is a 3/4 diesel will always tow better, and I needed to be able to pull a bigger trailer than my 2019 could.

Any news on EV Tundra? The sooner they do release one, the sooner they can improve the range and charging capability and I will jump in eventually when the product has matured.

Unfortunately I don’t foresee a turbocharged gas engine, particularly one in a pickup truck doing “crazy miles” as you put it. There’s no getting around less displacement making the same or more power as a larger displacement engine preceding it, the the components of the smaller engine are going to be more stressed. So long term reliability and durability will suffer, particularly if the owner doesn’t stay on point with maintenance.

Toyota knows this of course and will leave a lot of untapped potential to hedge against hard use, poor maintenance, and rare slips in QC/QA. Since the major components are already under more stress, there’s less room to increase power safely. All things being equal there’s still no replacement for displacement, whether you’re going for longevity, or big power.

Looking to buy one about 6 months after it has been out. Went from a 04 Tundra that I had for 13 years to a 2017 Chevy Silverado 1500 and wishing I had bought another Tundra but wanted better gas millage. I am so ready to go back to Toyota after already having several issues compared to no problems other than maintenance from 04 Tundra
