    No I won’t be buying a 2022

I’ve bought 2 vehicles brand new in the model year in which here was a total/major upgrade. The number of recalls and time spent at the dealer was a pain in the ass.

I’ll wait until the bugs work out.

Hey guys. Been lurking this thread for a LONG time. I'm a huge Toyota fan and have had 5 Tacomas including a 3rd gen and 4 4Runners. They are all I've ever owned. I'm looking forward to getting a 2022 Tundra.

I wanted to share some info I have on the new one. First, the TT V6 will debut fourth quarter this year. Hybrid will be out Q1 next year. Dealers will be officially shown the truck virtually next month. Some dealer higher ups in certain regions have already gotten to drive the new truck, but most are waiting for the June reveal.

What I have been told is they pitted the hybrid Tundra against 1/2 and 3/4 ton diesels to compare torque, and from what the people who got to test the new Tundra have to say, it's phenomenal... Like the torque out of the hybrid system is the real deal. I did ask if it will be a twin turbo hybrid but didn't get an answer on that.

I really hope this is a world beater. I can't wait to see it

I have a very good relationship with someone in the industry. They told me all about the 3rd gen Tacoma in 2014 (truck wasn't shown until 2015). And I planned on buying the Tacoma after what they told me. All their info has always been correct. Unfortunately they weren't the lucky ones that actually got to drive it, but said the ones that drove the Hybrid version said the torque is insane. That's the one I'll be planning on as soon as it is released.

I do hope it is mated with the TT V6 and it would also be cool if it utilized an electric motor at each wheel. But I don't know either of these things unfortunately

    It's merely speculation ;)

But for real. I've been refreshing this thread everyday just to read posts that have drifted so far off topic. I wanted to share with people eager like me on the info that I was given today.

Edit: I also never signed a NDA haha

Torque is good and all but what about payload? If it’s low again that’s what will make me go to a 3/4 or 1 ton. Any word if it was raised if they are putting it against a 3/4 ton to compare torque?

Good question. I'm not sure I didn't ask. I know I've heard of payload concerns on here. I wonder if they're aiming to make it like the Titan XD? The next time I could ask would be in a couple weeks. But I bet that we'll know everything in June after the dealer reveal.

I think it's stupid they're waiting until summer to show a brand new truck that will supposedly go on sale in the fall. I ordered a Bronco last year because I was worried we weren't going to get a new truck.

Would be cool if they compared it to the diesel trucks for that reason too

Mike Sweers, is that finally you on here? Good to see you good Ole' buddy ole' pal!!!! Bout time you finally joined the rest of the Tundra fanatics. Clearly you can see we need 90mm+ twin turbos V8 matted to a 12-speed transmission. We can compete on No Prep Kings drag racing, then get 24 MPG on the way home. Then next weekend we can hook up our 35 foot, 12k pound toy hauler and not worry about payload....... All while riding as good as a Cadillac Escalade. Whatever you do make sure you keep that truck under $40k also.

Seriously, anybody that drives a 1/2 ton truck, then compared it to a 3/4 ton truck that weighs 1,500 more pounds, makes 1,000 lbs. of torque, has 4x the payload, 10-speed transmission, and then says it is "phenomenal" is full of absolute "cacca"

Other than that, your information is spot on with the 30+ other YouTube videos that say the same thing!

Highly doubt they go 3/4 ton with a hybrid. What's the point since it won't be EPA rated then. Now it can still have a huge payload increase since all it has to be is a GVWR of <8500 lbs. So lets take a guess that it's 5000 lbs curb weight - they could theoretically have 3499 lbs of payload and still be a 'half ton' since it would still be a class 2a.

And may as well compare to a 3/4 ton diesel for torque since they are the benchmark. Makes me think the hybrid makes up for the ebb and flow of torque found in a gas engine as it goes through the RPMs. Ford first tried to do it with the 10 speed, but then you get a whole bunch of pauses. Doesn't mean it feels the same as the HD diesel's, although if it's a Ram 3/4 ton it's 'only' 800 lb ft of torque too and 600 for the Tundra in a much lighter platform would likely feel better, but that it's far more comparable than the current gas only engines.

No I definitely don't think they're going 3/4 ton at all. I was just told they compared them for the sake of comparing torque.

Have you ever driven a higher performance electric car like a Tesla? Instant torque. It's a crazy feeling. If they can use that for low end torque and mate with a good engine it's gonna be stellar

Never driven an EV yet (away from the golf course at least) so can't compare to that. But do have a ton of time in diesels so understand how different the power is compared to gas. Definitely agree that I'd be looking for that electric boost when the RPM's are lower which would allow for a more linear feel much like diesels.

I don't have a ton of experience with diesels. I used to drive an old Ford 7.3 and I've driven the Titan with the Cummins. The Titan was trash, I think they phased out the diesels in them.

If you ever have a chance to drive a Tesla do it. It's the only car I've driven in a long time that put a smile on my face. I'd never buy one, but I'm really looking forward to the hybrid option for all that sweet instant torque

have they driven Toyota’s other hybrid vehicles. Insane torque is NOT how I would describe my parents Prius or our rav4 or Highlander...

The smaller diesels just give a taste of what the big ones do. I've driven the mini PS in an F150 and it was the same smoothness of the big 6.7, but it feels like it reaches it's peak at highway speeds. The HD diesels just keep going until they hit the limiter, just feels like it could keep going forever. Gas engines may accelerate faster, but you feel them hitting a limit at higher speeds. I'm actually more curious about electric top end than the insane from zero acceleration.

Wonder if that has to do with the target demographic. I rode in a Highlander and it did what I expected, just that it would sip fuel in comparison to the V6 power level it produced. The Tundra would be targeted at showing more of the potential power hybrids can do - and with a little programming it could easily have drive modes to exploit power one time or sip fuel the next.

my salesman told me in sport that hybrid flies. Again not sure what he has to compare too. But I didn’t buy it for performance anyway.

A Prius isn't a truck so I don't think it would be as torquey. What are you calling BS on? I'm not claiming I know things like payload when I don't. I only gave dates of release and shared the experience I was told of people who actually drove the truck.

Please enlighten me to what I'm BSing about

I’d be happy with about 2k lb of actual payload. Not 1520 to 1730 lb in the brochure then 1200 on my door sticker minus another 80 for “modifications”.

I want a crewmax 4wd to leave the factory with ~2k lb on the door sticker.

All the manufactures do this stuff with there payload ratings. It’s buyer beware. If you need 2000# payload you need a 3/4 ton truck... need the breaks too. Never seen gas needing to be added to the payload. I assume they already have a full tank weight cooked into the calculation. After all added options it would still be nice to still have 1500#’s. Four adult men can easily get up to 1000#. A 5000# trailer and that puts 500# on the hitch. Which leaves no room for anything in the bed.

Tundra handles 2000 lbs fairly well, stiffen up a few components and the GVWR could go up a 1000 lbs and still be considered a half ton. 2500 lbs with the right suspension setup can be done in a half ton - but would be quite the engineering feat to be soft enough unloaded for half the buyers yet stiff enough to drive stable with that weight. I have no issue with the Tundra brakes with that weight, IIRC they're either the same size or even bigger than those you get on HD trucks.

Driving with a 2500 lbs payload rated for 1660 would open up liability in an MVA. Doesn’t matter what aftermarket parts you add to make up for the original engineering design. That being said, Toyota better address this payload capacity issue with on the 2022. The Ford Ranger has a payload capacity of over 2100 lbs. Even the ancient Nissan Frontier has a higher payload at “1800 lbs”.
