I really wish everyone stop chasing the big screens, I had the 12" in my Ram, BEAUTIFUL to look at when stationary, but can be a serious distraction when driving.

Im going to guess, but theyre probably implying that Toyota implied better gas mileage and that downsizing wouldnt be an issue for power. Having owned two 3rd gen Tacos myself, yeah I averaged 17mpg and the power delivery was disappointing.

I had discussed this the other day somewhere else, but basically if you're hoping for a real world mpgs of 25, that wont happen. I could see Toyota using turbos to get it somewhere closer to 17/20, or in the neighborhood of a 10-15% increase. Even Ford with the Ecoboosts arent seeing real world mpgs that high, nor are they seeing much higher than the old V8s.

    F150V8.jpg
    F15027.jpg
    F15035.jpg

Their V8s are netting almost the same MPG as the 3.5T and just 1-2mpg less than the 2.7T which is their most economical option. Yet, the 2.7 is rated at 22 combined. These are stats from Fuelly so, take that how you wish, but they're not getting paid for those inputs.

My main point I like to remind when talking about turbos as a means to improve fuel economy is that it can be a deferred approach to cost savings.

Up front the MPG increase will save you, marginally. But if you're like most Tundra owners and you have a sense of pride over how long the trucks stay on the road, you will need to replace that turbo at some point.

Say you drive as the average American does, 15000 miles annually. At our current average of about 15 mpgs you would consume 1000g of gas a year.

Bump that up to a more reasonable but still potential increase from a turbo, to say 20 mpgs average. Now you consume 750g a year.

Current nation average for gas is about $2.10g. So our current V8s would consume an additional $525 a year in gas.

After 7 years you'd be at 105k miles, have saved $3675. Now here's the catch, that turbo will need to be replaced, before it grenades and takes much more with it. Replacing a turbo, with Toyota is going to set you back near 2x what you just saved over the last 7 years. You could ditch the truck, but if you live state with sales tax, there are 38 so the chance is high, then again that savings would be gone.

That's also all assuming that turbo doesn't require premium as well, which Ford recommends or requires depending on the model. Of course not using premium in a turbo app usually incurs programmed tuning changes, less power and less economy.

Over the air updates, 24mpg, full self driving 2021, 575 lb ft torque, evolutionary design, and a tried and true engine perfected over the last 10 years. Will not be able to go back to Toyota if they don't match in the next 8-12 weeks while my f150 is being made. IMG_0668.jpg

the 4.0 easily outperforms the 3.5, but not in mpg.

Honestly, since I own a 2019 4Runner and owned the 2 Tacomas, they perform about the same, just in different ways. If you were to just full out race theyd be too close. The 4.0 though has more low end toque and would be easier to drive if it had another gear. The 3.5 is gutless unless paired with the the MT and the 4.3 gearset. In that combo it feels torquey but only if you drive it like a Honda. They both need more power and MPGs. Getting into a Tundra was the best choice I made, lost 1-2 mpg overall, but actually enjoy the drive. For me, that extra $250 a year I spend in gas is worth it.

That was the point of my original post. They got better mpg’s but sacrificed quite a bit in overall performance/drivability. I hope they don’t make the same mistake with the new Tundra but I’m worried they will. That’s why I ordered a 21 Pro.

I didn’t buy my truck because it got great mpgs nor do I expect a truck to get great mpgs

Love the tried and true V8 option and have never been crazy about the recent switch to the turbo charged v6 they are trying to convince us is just as good in a full size truck. Will be interesting to see how reliable these new engines are compared to the 5.7. Lot to live up to

Even if they're just as reliable, they will have more replaceable and maintainable parts. There will be additional costs to keep it on the road. So far, the only option I've seen that starts removing some of those additional costs are electric cars. Hopefully the costs for those come down as production costs decrease. Turbos are just simply not enough of a benefit to be the only option IMO. I would personally prefer a hybrid approach at the least.

Everytime I see a 2nd gen Raptor driver go WOT I just smile and shake my head. I guess Im too traditional, but something that big and pretty quick, sounding exactly like the ol Toyota brrraapp, just gets me.

    bahaha...recite that sales brochure, sir!

Reality is people who work for Ford, wont buy that “tried and true” piece of perfection. Google “dreaded phaser”. You wont even have to be specific about “ford” or “ecoboost”.

Enjoy the hours of reading on recalls, rattling motors, busted timing gears/chains/guides, lemon law buy backs and happy customers.

It was out of breath at 60-65 MPH. If you wanted any more power past that, you had to go flinstone style

I thought the 5vz was a fantastic engine, damn thing is nukeproof. Sure it lacked power but so did every other engine back in 1995 that wasn't a v8, the Tacoma was smaller and lighter so it matched the truck really well, it was the 3.0 (T100 and LC) that sucked.

ok bud! this is my second tundra, and I've had a few issues. The cam phaser issue isnt as prevalent as you'd imagine. I've seen friends' 3.5 ecoboosts with 200k miles and no issues.

They can do whatever they want. We all know the 05/06 Tundras were the pinnacle of Tundra design, especially the white ones.

Wow, you do not like Tundra's? My surprise is not specifically about your dislike of Tundra's and yet owning one as to each his/her own. It's that you own one, dislike it AND you spend time on a Tundra enthusiast forum.
