The ZF8 in the Rams and in a bunch of the SRT’s / Hellcat powered rigs is arguably the best transmission ever made. I would LOVE one in the new (or existing) Tundra. Extremely reliable, huge broad application, and performs extremely well.

Ah, good to hear they've gone to a better one - a friend of mine went thru 3 in his ram that he traded in a few years ago... for another ram. :)

I talked to my service manager on Friday. He confirmed that nobody has any information on the Tundra; it's all speculation.
BUT, since the technicians would have to be able to service the Tundra as soon as they come out, i.e. will have to get training before they are released, the service department will probably one of the first to get information.
What he knows so far, is that there will be no V8, there will be a base TTV6 and a hybrid TTV6, and also possiblity of a 4 cylinder. However, the news he had was related to the new platform, not necessarily the Tundra, so the 4 cylinder might be for new Tacoma or other vehicle built on the same new platform.

The ZF8 transmission is a mixed bag of issues depending upon who made it and what it is paired with. The Chrysler TorqueFlight 8 is a licensed version of the ZF 8HP70 transmission. The ZF8 is also sold as a kit to automakers who then apply in their own 8HP70 controller software, torque converter and other components to suit their application and needs. Although this 8-speed automatic transmission is found in a number of different cars and trucks, the way that the transmission performs varies greatly because of who and how they are manufactured and what controller software and electronics it is paired with.

That said, Stellantis' reputation for automotive electronics is not the greatest. You can have a great transmission but if it is paired with crappy electronics, its life span is gong to be less than desirable.

I would have no problem believing a Raptor was never off-road. Or a Rubicon for that matter. At least where I live.

Although that is true , Chrysler does build the transmissions licensed from ZF for the V6 applications . The Hemi and the ECO diesels transmissions are made by ZF .

I totally agree but the fact remains that FCA's electronics which control said transmission tend have the shortest lifespan in the industry. Says who? Just look at the aftermarket and replacement sales of control modules for FCA products taking into account the percentage of sales. Replacement per 1000 units sold is quite noticeable.

A bad ATCM (automatic transmission control module) will destroy even the best transmission in no time.

Moral to the story is that you cannot look at auto components in an old school silo view, today the components are so interdependent that you need to consider the whole system to properly evaluate them.... or properly criticize them.

I agree but there’s plenty of Rams that have well over 200k on their transmissions with no problems .
Not saying that nobody ever has problems . That’s one area with the Rams I’ve owned that I’ve never had a problem with was their drivetrains .

I could go for this, but who is replacing a transmission module without cause? That's a part that you only replace because you have to. And FCA electronics are not good so hardly a surprise if they cause issues in other components.

I feel the ZF is a good trans just didn't think Toyota would put it in the truck. They usually use Aisins

2 reasons to believe it will be an Aisin - 1) near to the Toyota San Antonio plant an Aisin plant is being expanded/built (can't remember if it's new or just being made bigger) 2) Toyota is the largest owner of Aisin.

There's literally no indication that Toyota is going to use a ZF. Just another tangent of this thread.

Anytime I've heard of tweaking the transmission shifts it was done electronically, not by replacing a module.

Who knows. I’ve been thinking about this. Surely Toyota is aware of the amount of ridicule that will be mercilessly heaped upon them if it turns out this term only means “catching up to Ford but also being reliable”. Surely they’re aware that “world beater” can’t just mean that.

Toyota spent $391 million (some say $400 million depending upon the article) on the Asin plant in Cibolo, TX. It would stand to reason that Toyota is going to stay with Asin. They'll have more control over quality since they have a lot of skin in the game.
