We've all learned what TFL is all about on our own; I'm sure one day he'll come to the realization as well.

The chip shortage is in part what I am referring too when I say COVID, as it contributed to the now global semi-conductor shortage. It a semantics thing at this point regarding which one is ultimately blamed by an OEM. The new truck likely has far more electronics that require semi-conductors. Again the current Tundra is at reduced production due to semi-conductor constraints.

Either way, supply chains (especially global ones) change all the time and while that information may have been accurate at the time of filming it could have easily changed by now. I work in R&D for a medical device company and I am in weekly meetings that regularly include a new or ever changing supply chain issue. Most of our supplier and vendors have said the same thing to me about theirs as well. Supply chains everywhere are still feeling it to various degrees.

Whats cheaper? Adding a cooler to your transmission on a '19,'20,'21 or a V8 into the "NEW" Tundy?

I have both, one being a 2020 Ram Classic Warlock (MIL has 2020 Ram Sport so I see both designs) and other being a 2016 Tundra TRD OR. The Tundra is better. More payload, more towing, better fuel mileage, easier HVAC controls, more 12v outlets, and no rotary dial shifter. The way the Ram is better is heated steering wheel, TPMS display that's tire specific, 2 glove boxes, and 2 stage center console. Sure you can make a Ram that's outfitted to the nine's, but it costs $15k more than a Platinum Tundra, and sure it can get better towing/payload but those aren't the models found on the lot so you have to order it specifically so goodbye to negotiating.

The nit picking I had to do to create a list there is why I think we're at the pinnacle for half ton trucks. Starting with the next gen Tundra they're going to focus on grocery getters that can tow, and HD trucks will be for 'truck things'.

Nailed it. Half ton trucks now are the dad soccer van. You get massive seating for 5 with 5.5ft bed that when you option out the trucks, gives you 900lbs of payload. You throw cleats, some golf clubs and two shovels back there and the truck is already squatting 2 inches. We will see what the next tundra brings but my next truck will more than likely be a 3/4 ton.

This is what I am afraid of as well. I don't want to switch to a domestic HD, but fear I might not have a choice.

Your example is far to accurate and frankly its sad. Whats the point of the bed if the passengers alone eat up all the payload.

That's the max for a stripped out 1500 I'm guessing.

I'm the oddball customer that wants a nice (ie Platinum) daily driver for going to the office during the week with the ability to tow/haul on the weekend. I use my truck to do truck things, but I keep the interior nice and clean too. My current Platinum is just okay since I pay attention to the weights and am alone 98% of the time, but I would like to have a bit more margin. I realize this exists in the form of a high end HD truck, but those are overkill and I'm not a fan of the quality.

I probably need to just make more money so I can buy a basic truck to use as weekend beater and drive something else as a daily lol

My brother's 2019 5.3 SLT CC standard bed has about 1700 lbs so about 500 lbs more than I do. If he'd gone for the max trailering package, he could have had a couple hundred more pounds than that.

I have no experience with loading the recent GM's, do they squat like crazy with 1500 lbs or do they get very sketchy with that weight like Fords do? I'm always a little leery of domestics ratings, I'm so used to Fords that when you load them up they are not confidence inspiring at all and they're rated very similarly for volume crew cabs. It's one of those things that sure they rate them for it, but is it safe to do so 90% of the time and on the highways?

That I have no idea. My brother wants to eventually use his to haul a quad in the bed (which is probably only about half that weight if I remember correctly) but he hasn't bought one yet. He hauled a quad in his work truck regularly but that was the previous generation that was still all steel.

CC with a 6.5ft box is where it's at. Plus for half tons to tow what they say they can tow the payload needs to be 2100. Offering a max towing package is great but a lot of times you have to order so you get no deals. What's the price of a 1/2 ton SLT with max towing option? $55K? If I am spending $50K+ for a truck I am upgrading to a 3/4 ton. Obviously that is personal preference

From the GM build and price site:

CC standard bed 4x4 SLT 1500 with 6.2L V8 and max trailering package = $60k CAD

    CC standard bed 4x4 SLT 2500 with 6.6L V8 (gas) = $69k CAD

So I guess it depends on what (if anything) you can get off each truck.

One huge thing that would influence me is the leasing terms. Lease a half ton like that for 3 years and a decent down payment and it's 450+ biweekly, no real reason to lease over financing. Recently though I priced out a 3500 Denali diesel, so a $95k truck, and the same lease terms and down payment was 375 biweekly. Of course you're left with nothing at the end of 3 years, but I can deal with that to get into one of those big beasts for the 3 years.

Ok so assuming you get 4500-7500 off at the exchange rate we are looking at high 40s or low 50s. That’s not bad. Maybe I’m just a cheap person haha

I could run it on the US build and price site but MSRP on the 1500 is probably $51k USD.

When I was truck shopping, my main concern was that my truck, which would double as a family adventure vehicle, comes back every time from our trips to where there is no cell service. I almost bought a 6.2L Silverado. I’m so glad I didn’t. All that payload sounds nice but it comes with trips to the dealer just to be told “we couldn’t reproduce the problem :notsure:.”

I fit all sorts of loads in the bed, none of which are very heavy but are all quite large: our camping gear, all five of our bikes, our three kayaks, or construction materials for a home improvement project. It did squat a bit with 200+ lbs of softener salt in it. The stock leafs are so weak. If I needed to haul more, I’d still choose a Tundra. Give me heavier duty leafs, and I’ll just stay under my 4K/4150 lb axle ratings. The payload sticker is not law. This truck is awesome for my needs, and I’m hoping to never see my dealer a second time.

The next Tundra is supposed to be a “world beater”. I don’t think it’s likely that Toyota will call it that if it doesn’t have 500 ft lbs of torque, 2k lbs of payload in the crewmax, and mid-20s highway fuel economy.

This is my thinking too - Toyota doesn't do the 1 upping like Ford, they go for all new benchmarks like Ram does in the HD market. Now will they hit all the benchmarks for volume models (engine power, payload/towing, fuel economy) or do they just go after 1? So their targets are essentially 500/500 for power, 2500/13000 for hauling, and high 20's with those capabilities. Does a TTV6 do that, I would be blown away by it, but the hybrid - that's where I focus on. The TTV6 is going to be the cheap decent truck that goes after the hauling numbers, but the hybrid is the one that could be the benchmark truck. And it's going to be a 6 month or longer delay for the initial sales date so those of us wanting the big numbers could still be ~18 months out from getting to test out what Toyota thinks is the next benchmark.

Again, I went through this about 5 months ago in needing extra payload. At first I started looking at other 1/2 tons besides the Tundra. By the time you build and look at some of the other trims, your payload is really only about 400 more. Tundra roughly 1,150, others were in the 1,500 to 1,600 range. This was looking at higher trims. Compared to past times, dealers were not coming off these trucks as much as they use to. These "$70k" trucks were still being sold for $60k plus and moving off lots pretty dang quickly. I was not going to pay that for a 1/2 ton truck. Plus, the extra 500 pounds of payload was still not really that big of a difference or worth paying to upgrade.

I started looking in the 3/4 ton market and gas versions. I settled on a 3/4 ton Chevy 2500 HD in LT trim. Add the all-star package, Convenience II package, and leather upgrade package and you almost have a LTZ trim truck. It honestly has basically everything my Tundra had with a few more options on it. heated steering wheel, better back-up cameras, LED light and outlets in bed, Apple CarPlay, etc... I have to be honest and that truck is much much cheaper than and of the well equipped 1/2 ton trucks. It is also in line or cheaper than what one could get a Platinum Tundra for these days with the inventory shortage. The MSRP on the 2500 HD was $56,155 I believe and I paid $48k for it. Cheaper than I could sniff a 1/2 ton in the configuration I wanted. There were only 3 LT with the added packages within 300 miles of Knoxville, TN. The LT varieties were as scarce as the Tundra back in October.

I would be very very surprised if Toyota is able to make a crew cab, 6.5' bed, in higher trims and have payload over 1,600 in my opinion. The ford Lariats we have at work are new and only have about 400 pounds more of payload on them than a platinum Tundra.

Trust me, if Toyota was able to make a crew cab Platinum trim with 1,800 of payload or just a little more, I will gladly be back in one!

To go from a 5% market share to a World beater will take more than a fresh body and a TT v6. I smell slick salesman hyperbole.

Same with me. Although if the next gen is a flop I may be in a GMC anyway. Talked to 6 or 7 mini duramax owners the past few weeks through work and they all love them. Upper 20's to 30mpg on the hwy and 20-21 towing bass boats sure has me intrigued.
That sure as hell beats the 15 and 8 I get in my tundra even with the 30 cents more a gal for diesel.

Absolutely! I have a local GM dealer near me that I told the guys to give me a call if they have a truck that might suit my needs
