The Lexus V6 TT is a very reliable engine. Toyota isnt going to risk their reputation on putting in a unreliable powerplant.

The 3.5 in the '16+ Tacos came from the Camry/car platform. Great engine and reliable but sucks horribly in the Tacoma.

My gut tells me Toyota will fuck the Tundra up just like they did the Tacoma.

The driving dynamics of a high strung low displacement engine, will never be the same as a smooth linear NA V8.

The amazing low end torque that turbo can provide if done right is amazing. I think Toyota will do it right. But I doubt it will be significantly more efficient or more powerful than any other turbo v6 on the market. And will probably be less efficient than the 5.7 when towing.

look at the new all electric Hummer numbers. that's pretty impressive.
Maybe in 5 years an all electric Tundra ? Toyota has the technology already.

I’ll keep my 2019 and my V8 before I go to a V6 TT. I’ve seen to many have issues and the V8 is tried and true. Bump horsepower add the 8speed and call it good. Even direct injection would add power to old work horse.

Direct injection requires a high pressure fuel pump that is usually mechanically driven. It just adds more complexity to an obsolete drive train. More gears in the transmission would marginally help efficiency but not by much. In the land cruiser they only gained 1 or 2 mpg from the switch to 8 speeds. Cylinder deactivation or “active fuel management” only see marginal gains also. Even turbo v6 only gain 3 or 4 mpg over their v8 counter parts in the real world. Other makers have stacked all theses features together to gain efficiency at the cost of complexity.

The things that would make the biggest difference would be an aggressive hybrid system not just an “e torque“ system or a smaller displacement Diesel engine but we know Toyota isn’t going the diesel route which only leaves hybrid.

You're mixing up GVWR and GCWR. The F150s have a GVWR of 7850 lbs or lower.

There's no replacement for displacement! :D In all seriousness, I worry about all the additional heat, wear and tear and additional stuff that can go wrong. I do trust Toyota to put out a solid reliable truck but I'm also a keep it simple guy. I'd love to see an updated V8 in the Tundra. I really do hope for the best out of the twin turbo but until its proven reliable I'll remain skeptical.

Well I just bought my 2020 this year. I figure they'll have the kinks worked out by 2035 when it's time for a new truck.

The Tacoma needed the twin turbos to solve its low torque issue. Ford's 3.5 and 2.7 are not low torque motors.

Covered up the front but at 6:15 you can clearly see there is still a honeycomb grill on there.

If you want to compare the bed, look at a 2020 CM. There is less than a foot between the rear wheel well and the back of the cab. The truck in this video looks to have nearly two feet of distance between the rear wheel well and the back of the cab. Almost the same as the DC. This is a CM with a 6.5 bed.

I believe Toyota should compromise between the CM and DC, just go for somewhere between the two's cab space just offer one four door truck.

This is a different truck, looks like the short bed:

Who's actually towing 14k lbs with a halfton safely and within the truck's payload capacity?

People smart enough to read the brochure but not smart enough to read the door sticker.

Pulling twice what your tow vehicle weighs is just dumb, but that doesn’t mean trucks aren’t rated to do it. Anything over 10k I leave my tundra at home and take one of my one ton service trucks. I am one of the first to say that the game Ford is playing by increasing payload and towing by making the truck lighter is stupid and counter productive to a safe and enjoyable towing experience. But if the new tundra comes out with a 8klbs gvwr and 2k lbs of payload I’ll be one of the first to buy one. And feel comfortable towing 12klbs.
