I had my new 2022 platinum tundra 33 days and there was a rattling coming from the lower transmission area and I brought it in for service and the dealer advised me the transmission needed to be completely replaced and could take 5 days. As a contractor who needs a truck to earn money I went big @ time of purchase to avoid this issue. Needless to say there are no trucks available and I was offered a 2021 4 runner which is smaller than the highlander I traded up . This is my 3rd toyota and most expensive purchase I have ever made feeling disappointed doesn't describe it well enough

Buying a new first year model of any redesign is like playing Russian Roulette..

    Best of luck though.

    Couldn't agree more!
I think it's pretty hilarious how many people are out there saying or agreeing to this. Buying any new vehicle regardless of whether it is a first year design or 5th year is going to have problems. It's statistics people. This is the first transmission we've heard of failing out of probably 40k trucks already made since December that's like 0.00002%. I guarantee you that any auto maker has transmission failures come in for warranty repair at any given moment. They are mechanical parts there's gonna be one in every bunch that fails...

OP I'm sorry you had the bad luck but I'm sure Toyota will get you taken care of and you'll be back at it in no time.

Tell me out of the hundreds of thousands of 2.5 gens that were sold new, not one of them had major problems....you can't.

I have a 2018 Escalade (3 years after it's redesign) I bought new and guess what it needed last year with 15k miles....a new transmission

I'm sorry you are having to deal with this. Nobody expects their new vehicle to have a failed transmission. You have every reason to feel disappointed and upset. Unfortunately for us all, spending a lot of money doesn't help avoid issues. I'm sure Toyota will get your Tundra fixed up soon. I would talk to Toyota corporate about extending the warranty due to your loss of confidence in it.

If it make you feel any better, I offer the the case of the purchasers of the up to 200k 2014 Porsche 911 GT3. Every GT3 made that year had to have it's entire engine replaced which showed up on the carfax.

    https://www.motortrend.com/news/all-2014-porsche-911-gt3-engines-to-be-replaced/

    Good luck!

    Sorry to hear OP

If you really need a truck, your insurance should provide you with a comparable rental. Or pressure the Dealership to cover the rental or get you what you need, vs what they have. Given that it is the F'n transmission, I would believe you have the leverage to make that happen. Anyway, good luck. Keep us posted.

My 20 year old Tundra has been more reliable than some of the 2022's.

That said, I'm confident Toyota will get the kinks worked out.

....no tow hooks....lol, I noticed that when I first saw the Tundra and at first figured it was just based on model. Toyota missed the boat on that one. I'm sure there will be an aftermarket solution soon.

I appreciate everyone for the feedback ,
if I didn't have bad luck I'd have none at all. I'll definitely follow-up after I get it back with a full review. I can't say I'm thrilled that toyota doesn't even offer the V8 anymore. But hey I purchased it for a change in pace and it's still an amazing truck I just hope this is my only bump in the road.
As for the rental the dealership has given me for free a 4 runner and I'm confident I'll be working it hard the next few days unfortunately.

GL, the 4runner is a solid suv. I've owned 3 of the current generation. Never had an issue. Just traded my 8 yr old, sr5 4x4 with 103k miles for 79.6% of what I paid new for it in 2014.

You bought with the same hopes that we all did. We're taking it on faith that Toyota's legendary reliability is somehow baked into our new trucks. It just plain sucks when that doesn't turn out to be the case.

Man, that really sucks, I feel your pain though. I bought a Tundra as a change of pace as well, I just didn't expect the pace change to be from driving to walking while my truck is in the shop, LOL.

I don't know why 2022 Tundra owners keep taking the bait. Why not just ignore the posts from forum members clearly baiting you? They'll get bored and move on.

    @Bendeizl
Sorry to hear. Thank you for posting this. At least they gave you a 4Runner.
If not for the supply chain inventory issues you would of probably had another Tundra while it was in the shop.
As a contractor who works his truck, these kinds of posts are very important to me.
I am not a contractor but I am working my truck under load, each time I use it.
    Let us know what happens.

Update: got the tundra back almost 2 days later (not bad down time for a transmission swap) the noise is gone but the smooth shifting and seamless gear switch is gone. I'm not happy I can now feel all 10 speeds . I don't understand why this has changed . This truck is not what I test drove 800 miles ago . Not sure if I should bring it back ? Your thoughts please?

If you can live with it for however long you plan on owning the vehicle, don't take it back. If you want that smooth seamless gear shifting back, take it back.

I would give it a few hundred miles at least for the ecu and transmission to “re-learn” and recalibrate. Then if it continues bring it in and compare it to another 22 truck on the lot if possible.

There’s some learning the transmission needs to do to compensate for tolerances. It’s a brand new transmission so basically all its learning is zero. There is an AT compensation code that is registered to the TCM. If they reused the TCM and didn’t adjust the compensation code for the new transmission, I can see it causing clunkier shifts. Give it time to see if it improves, otherwise take it back to the dealer.

If it was me, I'd get with the service manager and let him know my concerns. I'd be willing to let it break it, but I want him to know it's not right from the start.
