anyone run out of fuel due to this yet?

does the distance to empty get all messed up as well?

I could see when you have a lot going on in life and you glance at the gauge and think you have fuel and you don't.

    come on toyota, lets go.

Had my first experience with the fuel gauge issue today. Parked on slight incline in my driveway with 3/4 tank, got back in an hour later and read full. Going to have to start watching the odometer and fill up based on mileage I guess. Frustrating.

I haven't run out of fuel but I can verify that the distance to empty calculation get's reset along with the fuel gauge reading. It's pretty lame. That being said, I had this issue a bunch when I was spending more time in the mountains. Recently i've been super busy and just doing my normal commute, haven't had this issue in weeks. Whenever it happens I just go top off the tank. Kind of a pain but that's all you can do until Toyota releases that software update.

I read someone said that if you turn off the truck in drive mode. Let it sit for a minute then put it in park it resets the fuel gauge. I haven’t had this issue in a while to see if this works.

I assume that the fuel gauge has a bit of a "learning" period with it.

I disconnected my battery this weekend while doing some wiring. When I reconnected it, I noticed my fuel gauge was reading full and my DTE was in the low 400's (my usual DTE when full). I know my tank was only half full at the time. I drove around and put probably 15-20 miles on my truck running errands and watching to see if it would go down. It never dropped to where it should've been so I just fill it all the way up.

I'll keep an eye on it today to see how far it drops. I need to put about 120 miles on the truck today so it should go down about a 1/4 tank by the time I get home. We'll see what happens.

This is the first time I've noticed any issue with the fuel gauge in ~15k miles.

I tried that fix and it did work, but the issue came back about two weeks later.

Tried the ‘turn off in drive’ and it changed my fuel gauge from full to about 7/8 full. Still not accurate, I know my tank is about at half.

Having the same issue with my 2022 SR5. Every time I back down the boat ramp the fuel gauge resets to full. Also, the Distance To Empty has not been reading correctly, even when I top off the tank. I have the 32 gal tank and the Distance to Empty shows 440 miles when full. This number should be around 600 with the bigger tank. Correct? Does my computer think I have the smaller tank? I have a call into my dealer and they are researching this.

My 32 gal tank always reads mid-400's on it's DTE when full. It read higher when I first got the truck before the lift & larger tires. But, since then the truck reads around 15.9 combined mpg and the DTE is always around 440 miles.

I'm always at 440 after filling up as well with the 32.5 gallon tank. But my MPG reads 19.1...

I tried this today and it worked. But why should we have to keep doing this? Toyota needs to get it together. The fuel gauge on my 1965 GTO is more reliable. Such B.S. for a brand new vehicle.

Mine shows more or less the exact same numbers for the 32 gal tank. I don't remember where I read it, somewhere on here i'm pretty sure, but I think I saw that the gas tank is set up to show "empty" when you have something like 6-8 gallons of gas left. I haven't pushed the truck to full empty to confirm...

Is that boat ramp that triggers the issue pretty steep? The first time my fuel gauge reset on me I was on a very steep incline out in the woods.

Yeah I'm the one that figured this out. You have to do it on a flat surface. If you do it with your truck inclined it will reset high or low depending on which way you are facing. I figured it out because I was listening to the end of a podcast and wanted to turn my truck off but not the radio. Only way to do that is leave it in drive, turn off truck, and then put it in park. When I did that I noticed that the gauge recalibrated it self. I have recently had the gauge reset on me when I was just sitting in park without having turned the engine off though. This at least works to reset it though. Like I said you must be on a flat surface or it will reset it high or low depending on if your truck is nose up or nose down.

The boat ramps I use are not very steep. On Tuesday I drove to the boat ramp with 1/2 a tank of gas expecting the truck to reset to full after I drove up the ramp (as it has done in the past). The fuel gauge did not move. Also, my distance to empty calibration has been getting more accurate. I thought my issue may have been fixed until today. I was down to under 1/4 tank and 69 miles distance to empty. After filling up, the fuel gauge did not move, and the DTE stayed at 69 miles, even after driving away. WTF? In the past the fuel gauge would reset to full. I did the trick where I turned off the truck in D, then moved to P and fully turned her off. This only bumped the gauge up to 1/2 a tank. I drove back home and did the trick again in my drive way, and it moved the needle all the way up to full. I had my truck at the dealer for the parking brake recall and they did some diagnostics on the fuel level systems and they said everything was operating properly. I'm going to call the dealer back now, asking them to call corporate Toyota to see if there is a possible fix.

Ahhhh when I fill up the tank reset to only mid to high 300s miles range.

This post is most similar to what I am experiencing.
Gauge reads near E with les than 25 miles until empty, but when I fill it up, it only takes 26 gallons. I was expecting somewhere closer to 29 or 30. I do have the 31 gal tank.
I'll try the "turn off in Drive mode trick" when I am next on a flat surface.

    Update Update

I’m currently working with Toyota Engineering on the fuel Guage reset. A few weeks ago Toyota Engineer loaded new software into my truck. Unfortunately this past week my fuel Guage went back to Full. Tundra009 gave me a fix which I forwarded to Toyota.

Toyota is working on a fix I can tell you that and I’m in the same boat as all of you. When you are in a parking lot or your driveway bring your vehicle to a stop leave your foot on the brake and in drive then turn your truck off. The Guage will reset to what you have in the tank almost immediately. You can wait 30 seconds and put it in park than restart the truck.

Toyota is aware and working on a fix.

I just experienced this for the first time after the lift. I wonder if that has something to do with it. Either way the trick worked. Thanks

Yep, I thought I was going nuts when mine has done it twice now. I’m patiently waiting for Toyota to figure it out. It is annoying but I figured I’d have to deal with new design gremlins for a while.

When I told Toyota about this they thought I was crazy. lol. I had to explain it to them 6 times. Funny if they are now pushing it as a temporary fix until they figure out the software issue.

I called corporate Toyota 800-331-4331 x7 to report the issue to them, as my dealer was not helpful. They opened a case and stated I need to recreate the issue and bring it back into my dealer. Then the dealer can report the issue to corporate Toyota. The more of us that can go through this process, the quicker we get a resolution, hopefully. I plan on recreating the issue just before my 5k service and leave it with the dealer for them to inspect things. I'm coordinating this with my contact at corporate Toyota so she can follow the process when I bring my truck in. Pain in the butt, but I feel it's the only way this issue will get fixed.

@Roof Top Overland If you want to recreate it right in front of them, park on an incline, leave the truck in gear, turn off the engine, put it in park, and just wait a minute or two. You will see the gauge reset right in front of your eyes. Then pull on to a flat surface again and do it again and it will reset to the correct level. Based on which way you put your truck on the incline it will either read higher than it really is or lower than it really is. I think this same affect happens when you sit parked on an incline with the truck on for awhile or drive very slowly on inclines but it just isn't as noticeable as doing it this way and seeing it happen within a minute.

They should be able to jack up the front to recreate the incline and issue on their own.... Sucks that Toyota is making us do all the leg work. Hopefully there are pockets of technicians in their network that have already been doing this.

Disconnect your battery for 30 secs then reconnect it. That's how Toyota resets.
