2022 Transmission High Temp Alarm

I'm glad I'm not the only one... the truck hits over 200 regularly, empty on relatively flat terrain.
My driveway is 1/4 mile long on a mild hill. It was at 208 after getting back from a quick trip to the store today.
I hit 228 unloaded last week in the hills, going up a steepish logging road for 4 miles at 20mph in 4hi...
Really interested/concerned what I will see going over the 6000' passes in Oregon this summer pulling 5k pounds in 90 degree weather.

 

Ridiculous. Hell, the owner's manual suggests that you reduce speed to 61mph to switch from 2h to 4h.

 

Based upon your configuration and input values my tranny temp computer estimates your mean ATF temp will be 1436.7°C

 

Honestly it’s about the driver not the truck…

I am convinced the dumbest most uneducated (in the sense of towing and physics) drive 1/2 ton pickups…and I own one. It is common place to see people towing in the left lane with a huge travel trailer attached with less than a car length space between the vehicle in front of them. Because 75 mph isn’t fast enough…

I wouldn’t want to touch 75% 1/2 tons used with ANY cooler.

Interesting. My dealer could only see the one value with their diagnostic tool as well.

A year later I’ve only had the temp go as high as 221F. I am well aware of it however and watch it.

Has anyone sourced an external cooler yet?

count me in with this. Had one on my taco and it made large differences when towing - never exceeded 190 in the worst condition.

 

Has anyone found the PID ID and Equation code for the Gen3 Transmission Temp data?
I've used OBDFusion on my Tacoma for 8 yrs to monitor Trans temp.
but it doesn't show any PID codes for the 2022+ Tundra trans temps.
I'd sure appreciate it if any of you can share the code.

Also, Im curious if any of you with higher trans temps on the Gen3 have a Trans/Cat Skid Plate installed?
i just installed one and was wondering how much extra heat it will trap heating up the trans.

 

So I have a trans skid. The only time I’ve seen this warning is during steep grades in 4hi/4lo off-road. It’s usually surprising when it pops up as it’s always during a steep, slow crawl. I usually get out of the situation I’m in and let the truck Sit for 15 min even though I doubt this actually cools it down as it’s hot af out right now. Letting it sit usually clears the warning and I move on. I was just looking into something to monitor the trans temp next time I go out bc I’m curious as to what the temps are.

 

Have you overheated in 4Lo? My temps go up in 4Hi when off-roading, but not really much at all in 4Lo. My TC got up to 247ºF last time I was in CO. I was slowly ascending a very steep grade with lots of loose rock and wasn't paying attention to the temp gauges. I'm glad I glanced down though. Put it in 4Lo and haven't had any temp issues since.

 

yeah I’ve definitely had it up when in 4lo but in a similar situation where I was jumping between needing the locker engaged and disengaging it back to a more steady crawl.

 

No trans skid here, but I will be installing a cat shield next week. Those scumbags are making the rounds in my hood.

 

Heard back from Linear Logic regarding TF2 - Transmission Convert Temperature for the Scangauge II (likely the same for SG III).

Here is the response from their Engineering Team:

"I've compared data we've gathered from a 2019 Tundra and a 2022 Tundra and they use the same parameter ID's as far as I can tell. They both use the same parameter ID for ATF #1, but for ATF #2 the 2022 is missing that parameter ID. I've looked to see if perhaps it was moved to a different parameter ID, but any there were only a handful of parameter ID's the 2022 had that the 2019 didn't have, and based on the data contained with them it's unlikely they were temperature related. Ultimately it appears Toyota, for whatever reason, isn't reporting ATF #2 on the newer Tundra's. I looked around to see if anyone was able to read ATF #2 on 2022+ Tundra's but so far I haven't found anything. It's likely just not reported, and even a dealer level scan tool wouldn't be able to display ATF #2. Why they decided to remove it, I have no idea, but it seems to be pointing towards that. I'll keep looking to see if perhaps it's just been moved to a new parameter ID though."

Hopefully a solution will come once Toyota figures out they have an issue and that even their TechStream software cannot read TF2 - which has been stated here by another member's firsthand experience.

Thanks but Ughhh!! - We Need The PID code and the Equation so we can enter it manually in other scanning systems like ODB Fusion. I was hoping to see it in his response. It will look like this (this is for the Gen3 Tacoma Trans Temp) - PID Number 221627. Equation (A * 459/255)+(B*1.6/255)-40 Thanks for help. Would be great if he could provide this for Trans 1.

Temp too high, no cooler, Transmission will blow up, Toyota is trying to save a few bucks or space, Change the fluid every 10000 miles and on and on with no real proof!

 

Anyone else notice schematic by Ryan is now deleted? Guess it was wrong or he deleted it for other reasons. No biggie as the coding TF2 situation for Gen3'ers has not changed with SGII.

 

most likely toyota lawyers sent a nice email to the forum management about him posting trademark info from tis.

make sense. Too bad a good thing with good intent became a liability to the Mothership. It will all work out in the wash given time. I for one love my Gen3.

 

May have caught up with his inside informant too. Too bad for us. He was performing a great service just tracking issues and providing publically available TSBs. (Both totally legal functions)

 

how are the toyota tsb public info? from what i can tell the toyota tsb are pulled from TIS which has restrictions per the user agreement. if you are pulling it from the nhtsa that a different story, but from what i remember nhtsa doesnt actually show a toyota tsb but a public generated posting created by nhtsa
