Not knowing the details of the implementation I would hope that if the electronics crapped out for some reason, the default mode would have fan clutch engaged.

Your right, no way of knowing. Maybe if the electronics fail it goes into a lock up mode.

I would hope that the engineers at Toyota would consider the possibilities of failure and avoid that from happening, but you never know.

I'm also concerned about all those electronics being exposed to the elements lol. I think these trucks could really benefit from even plastic splash shields for better aero and protection from the elements.

Also re: 12 injectors, not only is this a proven system from Toyota (D4-S has been used extensively in other models), but the alternative is to run DI only, which means walnut blasting the intake valves every 50k miles or so. Having port injectors in there as well at least prevents that. Kind of a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation...

So a spin on oil filter is better and a real transmission cooler is also necessary. I can deal with the cartridge oil filter on my `20 but I'm still annoyed with the the transmission cooler/warmer word games.
I'm not a fan of the funky fuel filler hose, just put the filler on the passenger side.
Maybe there will be some after market options but some built in storage would be perfect for all that empty space around the bed.

The Mechanic is quite surprised at the big cavities on both sides next to the rear wheels. I was very surprised to see this too.
He says "there is a big opening, just a giant opening space you can see all the way to the top of the bed..... then he calls it interesting.

I don't believe that any NHTSA crash test results have been released for the '22 Tundra. If I recall, some of the results for the previous gen weren't as good as some competitors. I believe that Toyota wanted to fix that. I suspect that they designed these spaces to improve crash test results involving pedestrians and to reduce the overall cost of post crash repair. But, what do I know.

Seems like a good place for auxiliary tank(s) or onboard air. Curious to see if those spaces are still empty in the hybrid version.

If I am not mistaken this was the same guy who did the warranty video that was floating around here a few weeks ago.

I admit that I have not been happy about Toyota deleting the Tundra's V8 power plant and I've been pretty vocal about it to date. Most of my blathering has been in regards to whether or not this engine will be reliable. After seeing this video I will say that I feel a lot better about this engine. I've stated before that I though if anyone could do it right it'd be Toyota but to date I hadn't seen any technical reviews and WHY this engine will be awesome and reliable. I wish Toyota would have made this information readily available in the initial introduction of the Tundra (maybe I missed it). For people like me, reliability is extremely important and I can say most of my concerns and questions have been answered. I will likely buy one of these Trucks in a few years after all the little bugs have been worked out.

Overall this video made me feel better about the new design. A few things to watch for but it looks like Toyota did a pretty good job at compromising engineering durability with cost. My wife has said several times now that when her Highlander is ready for retirement, she wants my truck and I can get another one. At only 300k miles on the Highlander we still have at least a couple of years, but that will give Toyota time to work the kinks out of the new design.

I used to have a Titan with the tool box in the back panel. There's room for a tool box on each side in the new Tundra, giving me more room in the bed. I foresee some custom aftermarket products coming to take advantage of this space.

The though also crossed my mine. However, my dad had one of those Titans with the toolbox and its was completely useless. The seal didn't hold worth a darn. He kept everything in the cab after using it once for a week. A guy I work with has a Ram with the bed boxes, he said same thing about those. The seem to be a tricky thing to properly seal.

well the Tundra sunroofs 2.5 gen leak because the drain holes plug up with debris. that never happened on a vehicle to me before. now I know to get in there with a something thin to clear them out every now and then during spring/summer/fall.

Too bad the parts are difficult to order for a brand new model. Sounds like the 1st production year issue to me.

VW had taste gate valve issues years ago and they replaced a lot of turbos. This was my biggest concern for this truck. I liked the power and interior but there's no way this design is going to last like the 5.7 did. The video The Car Care Nut did was great, he is very informative and way more detailed than any of the initial reviews coming out. He is a Toyota employee so I don't think he's going to start bad mouthing the new Tundra's design.
His series on the 5th gen 4Runner was great. He convinced me to order a 22 4Runner instead of the 22 Tundra.

I was asking some people to post their OBD2 coolant, oil, and ATF temperatures. Anything above 212 would make me concerned about the long term reliability.

That was a pretty lame video, IMO. No new information, not even any decent identification of components. My main takeaway was looking at the photos I was shocked at how many lines and hoses there are... looks like at least 3x any engine I have ever worked on... and also how disorganized they all seem to be. For sure some of that is from the disassembly but it's hard to imagine ever having all this stuff neatly routed and dressed out. I'd love to see one on the assembly line with everything positioned properly to have a better idea how it all goes. But what a freakin' mess.

Lol the gear runner guy doesn’t know what he’s talking about. It’s all clickbait. When he talks about the “blurred out” part of the engine at 4:25 you can see the fucking catalytic converters and turbo still attached. He couldn’t even identify the turbo or wastegate valve in the photo at 5:30.

Indeed, the guy seems totally clueless. That's 5 wasted minutes of my life I'll never get back. I will try to remember to avoid any and all of his content in the future. He said "I don't know" a bunch of times but he really should have said it once more: "I don't know why I made this stupid video".

Mine has that, and I'd guess all pickups do. It's just that on the 2nd gen, the outer piece curves under more, so it's less obvious.

In addition to that I have loads of airspace under the cab and bed. May be unique to the longbed with the small tank?
