I thought I might try to pre-order the 2022 Tundra so I contacted a dealer in Eastern NC where I live. Over a period of about a week, after my first contact, the salesman contacted me today and explained that their dealership had just received information on some allocations. According to him Toyota is going to start with 90 some Platinums and 124 1794 editions, I assume this means in this region, but not sure. Each dealer is only allowed 1, the build date is Nov. 15, with delivery the middle of December. They were going to order the 1794, but I could get whatever additions and color at the time when the order could be placed.
The price would be whatever retail is and all dealer fees, plus an additional market fee of at least $5000.00, also I would need to make a $500.00 non refundable deposit. At that point, told him no way and hung up the call.
Just thought I relay this experience so you guys know what is likely to happen if you try order anytime soon…
I’ll probably wait at least a year to see what happens…crazy market.

To be honest, I would have expected a far higher than 5k market adjustment….too rich for my blood too

I figure the market will still be crazy for at least another year. Even if the chip crisis ended today it would take a while for everything else to catch up and settle down. I think used prices will take even longer due to the crazy money dealers are paying for them

used prices are insane because of supply/ demand, im sure quite a few cheaper used cars were gobbled up with stimulus checks last year, the car market overall is lower supply

Imagine when supply goes up and people expect prices to go down, but the dealers overpaid for their inventory... They're either going to just sit there or the dealers will have to lose their shirt on them

That dealer is pulling hardcore scumbag moves. They are leaving their "market fee" open to inflation while also installing a minimum level of gouge, and then the non refundable deposit is as bad as a threat. It's a scare tactic to force an over eager buyer to submit to the likely $7k-$10k actual price gouge they will be applying after the fact. Complete dicks.

Agreed... My dealer allowed me to put a $500 fully refundable deposit down and said no markup, but about $3k in required dealer installed options... And even then I'm considering walking away if they won't bend on the options

This market adjust could be based on them overpaying for trades.

Did you tell him you were trading another truck in?

Dealer pays $5k over book for the trade in. Sells the trade in for 5k over book. Then charges $5k over msrp for new truck...

Great seller's market, what a poop show for buyers. I'm not even sure we hit peak yet either.

It's still possible to get a decent deal, but it's a whole lotta work and you have to be willing to drive

I think that "additional market fee of at least $5000.00" is happening because YouTuber D*ickhead like to buy these top-of-the-line trims for whatever it cost to be the first one to show it on his /her channel and then do dumb shit with it and then dump it 1 year later.

This makes dealers think that if a 20-30-year-old Youtuber can afford it then everyone can afford it and even more.

This has happened to any highly anticipate car coming to the market that's either making a re-entry like Acura NSX or brand new product like Jeep Gladiator, Ram RTX, Dodge Red Eye. Etc.

I would think guys willing to order a vehicle before even knowing what it costs are pretty easy to take advantage of. Give it some time until dealers have trucks in the lots and start there. Or be the first to have one in your town and pay the premium. I don’t mind paying msrp for a Toyota but I’m not paying for BS added fee’s. I can wait it out and keep saving for a down deposit. I bet 2023’s will be a little better anyway.

I hear you! 2022s is growing on me too. I think I'll hold out for an all electric or Tundra "Prime" model; if they even offer either. I've got a couple of years to reach 300K miles.

Yep all that hood trunk space on the all electric is going to be amazing. I wonder what the payload on the hood trunk will be

Right now? Not sure what a Lightning's or comparable vehicle's numbers are currently. The Rivian and Electric Hummer look amazing.

There is some tech on the horizon that may impact this factor in favor of more payload.

Walk away if there's anything related to "gps recovery system" on the list of addons. I would never darken that dealer's doorstep in fact. Every vehicle on the lot has had it's factory wiring harness hacked up.

To OP: just like when the tacoma was released, just wait a year if you can. We'll start seeing them discounted then.

I'm starting to see economic distress in my local area. Restaurants that "made it" through the pandemic are now closing just as customers are starting to go out to eat again. Same with quite a few small businesses. They also can't compete with the current level of Federal stimulus.

I would never make this many assumptions based on a single sales rep at a single dealership. Get on your computer, send some emails and try their ‘chats’, get information from different states and zones.
    They are not all equal.

Placed a deposit on a pre-order for a Limited TRD this week. I'm in a situation where I'm fed up with my F150 and need a new truck.

Dealer said they expect between 10000-20000 units for the Canadian market and all will likely be presold.

I know its an odd situation with Covid and without all of the information even released yet, but that's just the market right now. Also factor the amount of demand from current Tundra owners who have been waiting forever for this truck to come out.

If I were to pay 5k over MSRP I'd want to be sure there no dealer extras (clear coat protectant, tint, USB cables, interior protectant, LoJack.) All that crap can easily add thousands to the vehicle. If you want the truck badly enough 5k isn't that much when spread out over 10 years. You'll save a lot on gas compared to the old model.
