Glorified SUV cab with a truck bed and a false nose plastered on it.

When I see it reminds me of men wearing man buns.

    Enjoy.

Yup. Used truck prices are insane right now. Especially here in Vegas and Southern Cali. Did you see the 2010 Ford Ranger with 83k miles that made national news recently? Carmax wanted $23,000 for an automatic 4 cylinder 2WD.

Just to help illustrate my point, here is a 2020 Tundra 4WD with 19k miles in Vegas that a Lexus dealer wants $60k. Granted it’s optioned better as a Platinum but still a 2 year old truck with more miles for nearly $10k more than what I paid. Another used dealer has a 2020 SR5 with 28k miles listed for nearly $52k. MSRP on my truck was $50,028.

That being said, my point was I can mod a 22 and still get similar or better gas mileage than an unmodded 21 or older. Definitely better mpg than a similarly modded 21 or older. It’s was less about making a justification on the difference in purchase price.

Side note: I hope all those links work. Trying to do hyperlinks while using the forum on my mobile tonight.

I get 14 combined on 285/75s and a 2/1.5 lift with steel skids, a retractable tonneau, dual battery setup, and other minor add ons. Judging by the 3rd gen fuel economy thread, I’d probably get 16 combined in a 3rd gen with the same kind of build. Not life changing numbers.

I bought my 2020 SR5 CM with 6 miles, Blackout, SR5 Upgrade, and other packages in 2020 for $41.7K, with lifetime engine warranty and $200 worth of parts, plus 4 free oil changes/rotations.

I've got no serious issues (aside from lack of availability and supply chain issues and the spectre of a wastegate issue LOL) with the 2022 Tundra, but I just paid mine off last month. For what I want, the cheapest Tundra would be about $53K. I can get about $43K for mine.

So I'd have to pay an extra $10K for about 2-3MPG more and better towing. Given I've towed a maximum of a 20' camper 2x a year, and drive maybe 25 miles a day...it doesn't make sense. In other words, I'm abstaining from buying a '22 because I don't need one, not because "lolz 2nd gen is better."

I don't have any complaints with the power of the 22. As far as sound, I'd prefer a quiet ride, but the pumped in sound isn't bad, if that's your thing; personally, I'd turn the sound off, if I could.

In some regards it is, lower peak as well and a 10 speed behind it, while being overall more efficient.

that said that doesn’t mean the 5.7 is a slouch , I own one currently

I have been extremely happy with the power and have even gotten 20mpg on the highway. However, on a long trip home north against a Northern wind, my mpg was limited to 14.5 mpg and the turbos were running at 10psi (50%) most of the trip. They usually turn off after acceleration. Haven’t towed with it yet. Will be curious how hard the turbos will have to kick in during the haul.

Yeah if you're going to compare power here it's an increase of like 20% torque available at 1200rpm lower. That's pretty substantial.

The lower torque band of the TTv6 is pretty awesome. The 5.7 needs to really wind up (which it was made to do!) to hit its stride.

From the reports so far, it seems the only way to get advertised fuel economy numbers is bone stock cruising unloaded without a headwind. Seems like kind of a downer, but I wonder if most ‘22s just aren’t broken in yet. My truck got like 11 mpg for the first two tanks of gas. But after that, I could get up to and a hair better than advertised numbers before mods (17-18 highway).

I've always thought EPA numbers are always a joke? Am I wrong? I've never hit an EPA number in my life and thought they're super hard to achieve across any vehicle. Are prior Tundras on point historically?

I could hit em easy in my Tundra before mods. Accelerate more quickly up to speed than you think—if you take it too easy, it seems to be worse. Don’t speed, keep your truck stock, and stay under 65 on the highway. I could get better than EPA numbers doing this.

Hard to stay @ 65 for long trips though. But is it really worth burning significantly more fuel to shave 20 min off a 10-hr drive?

Depends on the driver. I am lucky, and I usually exceed EPA estimates on my vehicles. I don't drive like a grandpa, but I keep the jackassery in check too.

EPA fuel economy is really for comparison purposes. The drive cycles are modeled after driving patterns in Southern California/LA area so there’s a huge mismatch to the middle of the country that has 70 or 80 mph speed limits.

Anyway, biggest fuel drain on the 2nd gen Tundra is the torque converter. It hardly locks up the torque converter clutch. The 3rd gen on the other hand is basically in TC lock up from 2nd gear. That’s one big reason the 10-speed is so efficient.

I suppose it does. Although in this video the 2022 started on concrete and the V8 struggled at first.

I found staying under 2000 rpm really helps. No issue staying at 65 around here since that's the speed limit.

Same here. I live in the Ozarks with all sorts of hills; and even going up and down hills all the time, it's not at all hard to get 16-17MPG. Have easily gotten as high as 18.5MPG going 65-70 on the interstate/highway.

I sure as hell don’t if I’m unfortunate enough to be on it.

    haha Yep, exactly.

    Agreed 100%

Substantial with what regard? Acceleration is still the same. Perhaps having that 70 more ft-lbs at a lower rpm will tow better? I re-posted this for you.

Yes, the V6TT peaks sooner at 2400 rpm as you mentioned. V8 peaks at 3600 rpm. Here are some links for you:

BoostAddict - Underwhelming? 2022 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro test - 0-60, curb weight, 1/4 mile, etc.

"What about the 437 horsepower and 583 lb-ft of torque hybrid drivetrain that includes a twin turbo 3.5 liter V6? Well, it results in 0-60 of 5.7 seconds and a 1/4 mile of 14.5 @ 92 miles per hour."

The Quickest Pickup Trucks MotorTrend Has Ever Tested

"The first model year of the second-generation Tundra just beats the Ram, the F-150, and all the newer Tundras we've tested (with the exception of one, stay tuned). The Toyota's 381-hp, 401-lb-ft 5.7-liter V-8, backed by a six-speed automatic, propelled the Tundra to 60 mph in 6 seconds flat and resulted in a 14.7-second quarter mile at 93.9 mph."
