No. I mean pulling the valves and walnut blasting them. It's not cheap, but it is possible.

TFL is only good for getting to see a vehicle in motion, but their verdicts are off base at times. They took the Frontier on a small obstacle and due to poor driver ability it didn't get over a particular point in the trail. Their conclusion was that it needed a front locker, and they tried to justify this by running a Bronco up it with the lockers going. Thing is, they took a way better line in the Bronco. Yes, a front locker would have helped compensate for the piss poor line and the driver not knowing how to use the gas pedal, but the Frontier could have gotten up that with a better driver and did not need a front locker.

I had a 2001 frontier, 2004 xterra, and a 2015 xterra. All great reliable vehicles. I would have kept or bought another if i didn't want the room of a full size pickup.

That's a valid point. Going from a truly cavernous CrewMax to a midsize truck might be more than I can handle. Have to sit in one and see.

The Frontier is a good overall performer. Hell, it has more payload than most Tundra’s.

If it were me and was in your shoes:

First, keep your current truck. You know the in’s and out's of it. Toyota reliability is the horse I would bet on.

Second, get the title to your truck. Get out of the payment cycle. Once you pay cash for a new vehicle in the privacy of your own home two weeks after purchase is a feeling like no other.

Third, start saving for your next vehicle. I have started a fund for my next vehicle. Shouldn’t need it until 2026-27.

Somewhere in there I might buy a shitbox and drive that instead of my very expensive truck. This has proven to be a lifesaver to me. I know you liked a comment of mine recently about if I had not purchased a commuter car my current truck would be close to 200k miles. So the 16k I spent on the shitbox saved me from buying a new truck…whatever that cost would be.

I remember the day I realized the Tundra would no longer work for my needs. It was right after my first long trip with the camper. What did I do? Started saving. It took me 3 years to save up for my diesel. Could I have went out and purchased one right away? Sure. I was saving around 1300 per month for my next truck. My payment would have been less for a lot longer though. However, I didn’t have a payment on my Tundra and it was nice to keep the cycle going.

Why you gotta be all wise and shit, Yoda? Fun hater. This really is the smartest financial thing to do, and I know you're right.

Purely hypothetical situation here, just so I can get your take on the rigs available, the Tundra gets t-boned and is a total loss. Insurance cuts a check for let's say $42K and you are going to buy a vehicle.

Needs haven't changed from what we previously discussed, but add the stipulation that you cannot buy used. What's your pick?

Maybe a "long term" test drive? Some places will let ya keep em for a week. Rental is an option to see if its practical for ya.

Definitely would do it if that were an option, but I've never seen any dealerships anywhere close to me offer the option. I understand that they don't want somebody to have it for a day and run up a bunch of miles just to say "nah, I don't like it", but if I could take a car for a weekend It would definitely let me get a feel for it. Guess I should ask them. Can't hurt.

From what I understand, Avis has a free 2 hour test drive, and for a little money you can keep it for a couple days. Think it was like $60 a day.

You city people and your fancy stuff! That's awesome.

Nothing like that where I live, but if I make a drive into a town I may see what they can do. Thanks for the heads up on this stuff. I wouldn't have even known to ask.

This was one of my favorite reviews. Basically pointed out things to be aware of good or not so good. Telescoping steering would be a nice to have but the midsize truck cab isn't cavernous and a simple adjustment of the seat compensates. My seat does tilt when I raise it. Not much but it does tilt a bit as it goes up. Plenty of storage. Lots. He had no issues with the steering. Positive comments on handling. Simply brought up that it is hydraulic and not to expect it to feel like electronically controlled steering. This truck does stick to the curves with the front and rear anti-sway bars. It's a pretty good fair review.

Yeah, he has a longer one that is more details on the whys of it, but this was his basic recap. I prefer not to watch reviews that are over 10 minutes unless it's a lot of action shots of the vehicle from the outside. Not a fan of POV driving impressions, personally.

Mid sized would be tough. If you read all the reviews you should get a Honda Ridgeline. We both know that isn’t happening.
Tacoma is out for me due to the PCV routing/oil pooling up in head issue when off-road and then knocking a rod through the block. No thanks.

This leaves me with Ford Ranger, GM Colorado, Nissan Frontier, and Jeep Gladiator.

First I would test drive them all. This should eliminate at least two of them. Then it would start working on my needs and wants.

TFL certainly liked the Pro4-X. Maybe too much. At least TFL didn't dislike it. FYI, the transfer case is beefy and USA made. Forgot the name of the company that builds it. Super low range gearing. Only the Gladiator has lower gearing. Like the old granny gearing of old. 4X4 engages/disengages flawlessly which is nice to have again. No loud clunking when using hill descent like on the Taco.

That's funny because I'm pretty sure it was the same guys who "proved" the auto locking rear diff in the AT4 is fine and you don't need the ability to lock it manually like the Power Wagon has. If you're going to make up a narrative, at least be consistent.

That's just it, they aren't consistent. They get it right sometimes, they get it wrong others. Their verdicts are always suspect, but they provide enough footage that you can at least make an educated-ish guess to test on your own. They have a purpose, but it's best not to take it all as they serve it.

Ridgeline is out because you off road? I think @GODZILLA is planning to keep the RZR for that.

I've said it before and I'll say it again but my cousin drives a Ridgeline for work because he had issues with the Duramax Colorado he was driving previously. A mid size does what he needs in his job and he says "it's nicer to drive a lighter truck". BUT, full disclosure, his personal truck is an F-350 Powerstroke for when he needs more truck.

I’m not saying Hondas aren’t nice. Just a stigma that goes with owning a unibody truck. In reality, power to weight ratio is right there with the 2.5 Tundra.
