My buckles snapped as well folded up and buckled it was leaned against the window and a dirt bike tire against it. There was probably 1 inch between the tire and it folded up bounced off the window and snapped the buckles on both sides.

Need to be buckled up and supported by those arms when fully opened(it stay’s sturdy and out of the slipstream pretty well that way)

…not sure about all these failures but I have used mine in all versions of open positions (even with just 1 panel opened and buckled) and never had an issue.

Yeah with it fully folded should have those support arms and it should be fine on the straps. I had a tire against it and just didn't and it fell back about a inch and snapped.

I havent had any issues but I find that those support arms should of been longer so you are attaching near the top of the fold and not the bottom 1/3

Fast Forward to this afternoon......I get a Hybrid warning, call your dealer. So I go in to make an appointment and they take it right in. Picked it up 2 hours later, no mention of the cover.

Since it was bought outright, wonder if you can take it back for full/partial refund since it is defective from the manufacturer? Why is it that these car companies can have defective aftermarket products and not be liable to their customers to replace or refund immediately? Now you have to remove it and wait for a possible repair or replacement. Should not have to wait, given there are other manufacturers that make “safe and functioning tonneau covers out there. If Toyota values their customers, they need to make this right. Having to wait days, weeks, months to provide a “fix” is not acceptable IMO. Who knows, they may not be able to fix this recall without trashing these OEM covers and the consumer is out for how long without it?

Exactly. A few weeks ago, I wrote Toyota a letter expressing very similar thoughts... with a copy to DOT. I haven't heard back yet.

Amen to your post! If Toyota is actually removing and destroying brand new Tundra 2022/2023 OEM tonneau covers on unsold vehicles, then Toyota just needs to refund their customers with existing covers now. Plan and simple fix, the right thing to do for their customers. I’m sure that if one of Toyota’s CEO’s has a new Tundra with this accessory, you can bet that he/she will have a new replacement installed immediately. We need to get one of these “Youtubers”, like Pickup Truck Plus”, to post a video on this issue to get it resolved now, not months later………

I see your point regarding this issue about cost to refund. IMO, the cost of losing customers over the multiple recalls that this new 3rd Gen Tundra will certainly cause the truck owner community to look elsewhere for their next purchase as well as the folks like you that have the older gen Tundras that haven’t liked all the changes of the 3rd Gen. Guess we will have to see if these issues will make or break the future of the Tundra….

very doubtful since the forum people probably only represent maybe 5% of the tundra buying public (maybe 10% if you want to push it). people will still buy the tundra.

True, maybe some class action lawsuits that make national news would have a drastic effect on Tundra sales. The big three make up approximately 80% of full size truck sales, so they could easily take over the market share of Tundra.

My VIN isn't recalled, but the dealer removed my cover and kept it. I bought it, I paid for it, they took it and refuse to return it. Once they decide to return it, I'll have to drive 7.5 hours to fetch my property. Toyota IS NOT offering a refund (I have that in writing) and cannot confirm whether they will, or will not, be able to affect a remedy this year. I tried ordering an aftermarket, but no go. 5.5 footers are out there, by 6.5 aren't.

I never ever would of drove without it in the box or on the truck. Probably best everyone remove them at home before the clowns at the dealer get their hands on them. Bury the scumbags on social media....that will get some action

Mines at the dealership right now with the cover on. They didn’t say anything when I dropped it off, but no way I’m leaving without it if they try to confiscate it. I don’t think they will though. That is nuts that some dealers do that.

The removed the cover after the trade was made and the lines were signed and refuse to give it to me, refund me, or find a replacement. I own the cover, but I'm not allowed to look at it!

Enter my VIN in NHTSA and Toyota sites, no open Safety Recalls,.... Has anyone been contracted regarding their cover? This will likely end up in court. If the remedy is to fix the cover I own, I'll need to take time off, fill up my tank a few times, drive, wait,... because the dealer (Lia Schenectady NY) has kept my cover. I have no issue with Lia, but I shouldn't need to ever again go to that dealership. If the remedy is a new cover, I'm fine. I can have it serviced locally.

Are you saying that your dealer took your cover off and kept it, without paying or crediting you for it? IF I understand that correctly, I'd be furious. I'd even consider going to the dealer, asking (again) for remedy, and if none is offered I'd be calling the police on the spot to file a theft complaint. IMHO

I made three calls to Toyota Consumer Services before they agreed to refund the cost of the cover. The first call was a brick wall with a solid no to my request. I called a couple of days later and that senior rep found the “loophole” for a refund, but never forwarded the information to the service manager. The third call to another senior rep got the result I wanted, and the information forwarded to the service manager with instructions on what to do. I don’t know what the “loophole or special circumstance” was that changed the answer from no to yes, but I’m grateful that I was able to reach a rep that could help me out. Your service manager has to be willing to work with you and the rep to make this happen. I thought I would share my experience about this unusual recall in hopes that it can help someone else. I wish there was more to share, or even a special password or case number that would expedite a solution for you. The only thing I can suggest is to be patient and courteous with the rep you speak to, and be persistent in getting a reasonable resolution.

Fun Fact, Honda just recalled 500000 CRV's because the rear suspension can rust off the frame. You can still drive those around regardless the wheels can blow off the back.

My one call to them and the follow up when they called me back were brick walls. Then I wrote them a snail mail letter, but I have not heard back yet. So I will try another call next week.

What was the process you encountered? Did you have to take the truck to the dealer and have them remove the cover before they gave you a refund? It might help if I could refer to your case number as a precedent. If you don't mind, maybe you could send me that in a PM?

Here’s a picture of my OEM cover not flying off on the I15 haha. My local dealer said toyota will send me a letter when they have a fix ready and I can do what I want with mine until then.

I came back to revisit this problem to see if there was any news. This is getting ridiculous that it’s taking this long to at least know what they’re going to do. I’d hate to remove it as right after buying my truck a week or so before they made the announcement, I bought and installed a full bed Bedrug. I’m not crazy about it being uncovered. Dirt and birds pooping on it

My dealer told me to remove it and if I didn’t and it comes off, he said and I quote, “it’s all on you” resolving Toyota of any culpability I guess is what he’s trying to claim

Also, many seem confident that the cover cannot come off in the down position. How true is that? I can live with it like that and if I did need to haul something, I could remove it and reinstall after

I don’t see anyway that cover could come off being closed myself. Go have a look, it latches quite well in the down position. I also hauled some furniture and had it all the way up folded against the cab and it was fine.

To me it would ‘seem’ that in the fully closed position, the air would be pushing down on it but if it jiggles and air gets under it then it would be like a shingle being peeled back on a roof?

Yeah I think the danger is when it’s folded up. Like I said I drove maybe 10 miles on back roads with the load and it was fine, butI believe the danger in it coming loose is in that position. For my uses, the cover is locked down 99% of the time. I have a free oil change in 2000 miles, so I will see what the dealer says when I take it in.
