That's exactly what Toyota should be doing for all of us who ask.

I emailed the online seller (on this forum) that I bought my MX4 from asking if I should be concerned. They responded with no, the MX4 shipped directly from BackFlip does not have the OEM cover problem. Also note that MX4's purchased around Dec and after have a modification to where the latches attached improved. Not sure of the details, but if you order an MX4 now you'll surely get that improvement.

I just got my truck a couple of weeks ago. It had the cover on it. Am I correct in that not all that have the backflip from the factory are not affected? I had a notification a couple days about it telling me to call my dealer. I tried the last two days and cannot get through to the service dept. Then yesterday, the recall notice disappeared from my app but it is now back again.

I wouldn't be too confident in that unless and until they actually identify what the supposed defects are in the Toyota version. You said that the vendor said new MX4s have improved latches. That's the first mention of that in this thread but I suppose that could be the problem. I watched the MX4 install video and everything with the mounting looks the same to me as what I see with my Toyota cover. But they don't ever show the latches in detail... and that old video had to be with the old version in any case.

I rarely (if ever) drive with the cover flipped up - I went under it to make sure the thumbscrews were snug the other day - after just under 3,000 miles, they were a bit loose, but not completely. So, I snugged them up. I use the cover, so I can use the box like a trunk. Even in my prior Tundra with a soft top tonneau, I did the same. I've got the recall on the app, and also for the blanking screen. When I get the recall for my second fob I'll take it in. But, I have a long trip coming up and I will be storing items in the box, so will keep this until they have a replacement/fix for it.

Anyone have a legitimate idea on when these will be available to order from the parts department again? I have been contemplating for some time and keep coming back to the Toyota one. Hoping to have it and installed prior to a trip at the end of May, possibly beginning of June. Not sounding very good though from what I am reading.

Just hand tightened the thumb screws, made sure a locking washer was present, and applied some blue loctite to the bolt threads. Do not have any intention to use it all the way up anyway.

This is great and can't hurt, but we still don't know if that is even the issue. Just sayin'...

If they are removing the cover, but not the side rails, the only thing that combines those is the bolts on the cover. Just sayin'

And it could also be the thin metal brackets, the rivets that hold them to the cover side rails or the material the side rails are made of. Just sayin'... I really don't understand the overpowering need for people to speculate when Toyota is silent on the issue. Even more I see no value in believing in your speculation to the point that you don't even consider the possibility it might something else entirely. But have fun with that. You may be right in the end, but that isn't even the point.

Are they removing the covers when you get service done? I'm due to get the 10k service pretty soon. I need/want to keep my cover!
I guess I'll remove it before going in. Just in case.

    Are you kidding?
You own the truck and everything on it; dealership has no right to take it off and discard against your wishes, or without your knowledge.
The only thing I would do, just to be clear for them, specifically say that you do not authorize removal/etc of the cover, regardless of any notices/recalls/etc.

    This ain't communist China.......yet.

I agree. Just never had a recall that specified something possibly flying off of a vehicle. And I was trying to find out if anyone has gotten service and Toyota giving them the business with keeping their cover. I have no problem with standing up to anyone but I don't seek problems if possible.

The dealership removed the cover minutes after I signed and traded. This is an odd recall considering the lack of motivation to rectify. I've filed a complaint with the AG to push a solution. I can't expose my cargo to the elements, can't fit it in the back seat, so I've twice rented a uhaul trailer. Lia Toyota hasn't offered a rental, or any type of solution AND they kept it! I'm 3 hours away!

Toyota is sure handling this badly. And these dealers not disclosing the fact until after you sign the papers and pay? That should be criminal. "Luckily" I got my Tundra a few weeks before this hit, and I change my own oil. So, the cover stays on for now...

Based on reports I have seen here, it seems like some dealers are forcing them to be removed, others are letting owners keep them on if they sign a liability waiver, and others still that don't seem to care. Whatever the case, it is a real cluster flux. I do my own service so I will escape this unless and until I decide to take my truck in to get the rear window seals replaced. That can wait for now.

I ASKED for mine to be removed and was told "we don't have time for that today"

Luckily I'm capable enough of doing it myself. Swapped it for a Diamondback.

Let's say you financed your truck for 50K/4 years. The cover costs 1500. You are paying interest, and Toyota credit is being paid, for something you own but can't possess and Toyota has no incentive to remedy.

They STILL make money on you!

We should be able to bill them, using their own daily finance model, until remedy is delivered.

What they should be doing is loaning us vehicles that will function as ours were designed to do until ours can be repaired... OR... buying back the crap covers.

Exactly. I've had to RENT A UHAUL TRAILER. The trailer plus the cost of towing (the MPG hit is amazing). I was duped. I'd have NEVER BOUGHT IT had they informed me of this recall. I bought the truck AFTER the recall yet they sold it to me without informing me of the recall.

If the vehicle was shipped to the dealer with the tonneau cover on it (and it being on the Monroney label / window sticker), there is the likelihood that the dealer's hands were tied (ie: they have to sell what's on the sticker). Still sh*tty of them to not even have a conversation with you about it or try to find another way around it.

Brought my truck in for ‘factory required’ 5K mile service (which is a tire rotation, lol) and the service advisor mentioned the recall, said they had no remedy nor information and didn’t touch it.

Interestingly enough, the first time I drove with my cover up (a few months ago) it snapped the buckles on the retainer straps. I haven’t tried since.

I just pickled up my Tundra yesterday (23' Limited) and this was NOT on my build sheet but it IS on my recall list under my VIN. Sucks because I specifically wanted to OEM cover. Does this affect the MX4's? I hear it affects the G2's. Anyone can confirm?

I called Bakflip customer support a couple weeks back to ask this same question. The person told me that nothing under recall will be available to purchase from their website, so I guess keep checking to see if the MX4 is listed?

Speaking of, I have a MX4 for sale. DM me if interested.
