There is definitely truth to this in my experience. We bought both are last Toyotas from non-Toyota dealers. I couldn’t get the Toyota dealers to budge at all. Not only were they priced better, we got the Chevy and Mercedes dealers to move when we bought the Tundra and Sequoia.

We also looked at other used ones at Ford dealers and they were priced better and willing to negotiate.

not sure if i want LR or that AG which is starting to grow on me. i might be leaning towards buying it from a private seller these dealers are just crooks. i'm not in any rush in fact i just might wait to see if prices come down any.

Kissarmy, (great name btw) I’m in the same boat and I can guarantee that we are both tracking the same trucks. While all the internet gurus are saying the market on used trucks is dropping, the toyota dealers, on specific models, are holding firm. The LR 21 TRD Pro seems to be one of them. What I am seeing is that many lease vehicles were on 3 year terms and are hitting the dealers now from auctions. That might help with the inventory to pick from.

From what I’ve been reading and seeing the lease turn ins are about to go off a cliff. It’s the end of the line from when manufacturers stopped making cars during lockdown. So used prices may be staying where they are or creeping higher.

Here’s my main source where I read it. This guy has great auto industry insight, and has been talking about this subject the past week or two:

You're looking at likely the most desirable 2/2.5 gen Tundra ever made. The configuration (5.7L V8 w/ tow package, 4x4, CrewMax), trim (TRD Pro), model year (2021), and color (Lunar Rock) are all at the very top of the value pile. It will go down as a special piece of Toyota history and the prices reflect that, but it's still hard to stomach paying original MSRP or higher for a 3 year old used Toyota truck though.

All the more reason to shop around for a low-mileage, prestine 2018. Saves you thousands, and you get a transmission cooler, without losing out on any of the newer creature comfort features.

That’s a factor I have not heard mentioned. The few people I follow are looking at wholesale prices and cars not selling at Auction. Recently VROOM and some other online dealers closed their doors as well. The other issue driving down the market, from what I’m reading, is that people can’t afford used trucks at these prices because banks are not financing them or the payment is too high for them to qualify. I’m fortunate enough to be able to pay cash or finance and willing to fly and buy the right one, but I’m not going to pay MSRP from 3 years ago. LOL.

I thought that I read on here or YouTube that the 20/21 were the apex of the TRD pro with creature comforts and interiors. The trans cooler is troubling, but I can add one, I think, or someone made a kit? I know sunroofs are not a big deal for many, but my next truck will have one and it seems that the majority of earlier Pros don’t have them.
I contacted Jerry Johnson, the warranty seller, and as long as the truck is less than 3 yrs, 36K I can put a factory warranty on it. I’m still not sure if it’s worth the $1500, but that pushes me into the 2021 model as well.

Few months back I got my 21 CM SR5 TRD Off Road with 106 miles for 39K in Texas. Slapped a $1400 - 10 Years / 125K Miles extended warranty from Jerry and I am set for the next 20 years. Now I only have like 3600 Miles on it :)

I am looking for another 2.5 gen with less than 1000 miles to replace my kid 2013 2nd gen Tundra. I know is there somewhere for the right price :)

just out of curiosity, what about certified used tundras? specifically, dealers that seem to be trying to pass the cost off to the customer to make them pay to certify it. i've seen a number of toyota dealers selling used tundras and when i call they say they don't certify to save people money. i read somewhere else (i think elsewhere on this forum) that toyota actually reimburses dealerships when they certify (at least in some small portion). anyone know what the truth is on this and what the general strategy should be?

I bought a "certified" 2021 SR5 DC 2WD with 18,000 miles last month for $40,000 out the door.

The dealer would not budge an inch below that number. They let me walk out the door and they never called me. After a week I went back and paid the 40K.

You might be right about the creature comforts. But I know 2018 was the first year of the TSS (Toyota Safety Suite - Radar Cruise, Rear Cross Traffic Alerts, Blind Spot Monitoring, LED Headlights), while also being the last year of the transmission cooler. So I think that's pretty much good enough. I know my 2018 Platinum has all the goodies I could want, and was way cheaper than most 2021 SR5's on dealer lots.

Look on Cargurus. Those will almost always be dealers (higher pricing). Look beyond your local area. Then do a search on FB marketplace. Those will likely be private sellers, sometimes at lower pricing.

Now if you want a dealer for trade-in/financing/whatever, then adjust. Buying a vehicle is your one chance to save your family thousands of dollars.

Looking for a low mile/2020-2021 Tundra myself. Sick of the quality issues with the big three. And I would prefer the V8 over a turbo 6. From where I live in SW Utah, I'm looking as far as LA and Phoenix.

If you have Geico insurance, they have a mechanical breakdown insurance which functions like an extended warranty without the big $$ up front and you can cancel at any time. Geico, Progressive and some other insurance companies offer this.

I have ran into the cost of the certified vehicle being passed on as well. It was for a vehicle coming in and the salesperson, on the phone, indicated I could pay for it or not. If anyone gives you that option. Tell them F off, focus on the price, and then get a warranty, if eligible through Jerry. However, it might make sense if it is out of date for an extended warranty and CPO does give you some protection. That Geico deal is interesting too.

Yeah, I agree with you. Good to know there’s an option available through Jerry. I also didn’t know about this Geico deal. That was great info.

2015-2017 TRD Pros were based off the SR5 trim level.
    No 2018 Pro
2019-2021 TRD pros based off limited trim.

yes a trans cooler can be added but with the pro’s natural stance being leveled, towing anything heavy enough for long enough with a pro to necessitate an auxiliary trans cooler would be a miserable nose-high, bro-lean experience.

I did not know that. Thanks.

This 2018 4x4 SR5 with SE Toyota's XP package and a hard folding cover only had 32,500 miles on it with what must of been an OCD for maintenance previous owner, based on the CarFax, appeared at the Ford Dealer I bought the Edge ST at. I got it for $43,000 out the door. I know it was high but this thing looks and runs like new. Cleanest engine compartment and underneath used truck I have ever seen, especially it being 5 years old at the time of purchase. Still way cheaper than anything comparable new and I was searching for simple and proven to last another 10 years.

I have a 2021 1794 Edition with 50k miles, 2.5" lift, 33's, Leer canopy, and a few other mods. Great truck in perfect condition and I owe $42k. Looking at the new Land Cruiser and checked the retail value of mine. $49k!

Dealer here is wanting $52k+ for similar trucks in worse condition. I'd gladly sell mine for $49k.

I pulled the trigger on a 2021 Lunar Rock with a hair under 36K. Found a flight for $160. Buying a warranty from Jerry. $51K. Picking it up in 2 weeks. I could have waited and maybe find one for less, but I missed out on 3-4 Lunars that all went for more money. Now, do I sell my 03 Flippac Tacoma, the 1UZ 84 4runner, or the 85 Supra….or build another garage? Lol

I just bought mine, although its a 2019 1794 and only had 11,600 miles on it with a 6" BDS lift. I found it in Texas for $46,800 (they were asking$49K) at a Ford dealership. I am in CA, had been looking since October, and a 2019-2021 1794 with under 20k miles are going for $50K+. Even after shipping it was cheaper than finding one somewhat local with low miles...

That’s a heck of a deal. I’m in TX, and I started expanding my search to 1794’s and or other highly optioned models, but in the end, I wanted the Lunar Rock. I looked at one Lunar Rock in TX on my way to Colorado and it was $45K but had 73K miles, a dent, scratches, and a rip in the driver’s seat. It eventually sold too.

nice. I drove 3hrs to buy the poor man's version of your truck (SR) in barc red. 18k miles, 35.9K. I'm pretty happy with the deal.

Wanted 24k for mine (and got it), a 3rd gen taco w/ 100k miles (great truck). Missed the size of the tundra :burnrubber:
