I am in the same boat as Gfgneo. Most dealers in the area are 5-10K above MSRP and the honest ones are either staying at MSRP or 1k below.

I got an offer for MSRP minus 500 if I finance with Toyota. Minus 500 for Vet status. I think that's fair in today's market. Anybody think otherwise?

Just bought my 2021 Limited CrewMax with TRD off-road package and premium limited package. Paid sticker (approx $52k, OTD was approx $58k with fees and taxes). Dealer (Anaheim Toyota) initially tried to add $7k market adjustment but they dropped that pretty quick. I was able to get the ridiculous market adjustment dropped at 3 different SoCal dealerships. One dealer initially tried to get me to pay $13k over a $54k sticker ($6k market adjustment and $8k in unneeded accessories) and then they knocked that off to $55k.

I paid MSRP of $57,056 for my 2021 Platinum last week but they gave me $52,000 for my 2019 Platinum that had an MSRP of $53,500. I only paid $46,000 plus tax when I bought the 2019 new in 2020. It was a leftover that never sold. Sitting on the showroom literally with dust on it and a $3000 rebate and $4000 dealer discount sticker in the window. The 2021 purchase was a “darned if I do, darned if I don’t” situation. But I essentially traded up 2 years for $2300 when you consider the added options the 2021 has over the 2019. I am really happy with my decision.

BTW, if you trade a vehicle in, does that offset the taxable value?

It does. I'm not sure if it's state specific but my research says yes for me

So when you sell a car to CarMax, I suppose the tax is in included in the number they offer?

No, they pay you cash for the vehicle. If you were to trade in, in certain states, then it reduces your sales tax liability on the new purchase.

If you are not purchasing a new vehicle in same transaction, then there is no reduction in sales tax liability on a future purchase.

Damn, that’s just wrong! They are purchasing the car from you, therefore should pay sales tax!

edit: another way the taxpayer gets screwed!!

I suppose the would pay sales tax if/when they registered it. But the new buyer will be on the hook for sales tax (if required in buyers state)

Well I guess if they turn around and sell it, then pay taxes on the money made, I guess that makes sense.

If dealers paid tax on every vehicle they bought or took in on trade they would just pass that expense on to the buying customer. Then, of course the customer pays sales tax on any vehicle they buy so actually the customer would be hit with a double tax. I am pretty sure the dealer pays a tax on the profits they make selling the car though.

I just purchased my 2021 TRD Pro CM this week for msrp plus tax, tag, and title. I had to shop around for awhile to find a dealer not adding 10k or more in market adjustments to a Pro. Ending up finding a dealer that had one allocated but not spoken for. Luckily I was able to get a deposit on it in time to make changes so I got to build it how I wanted. Had to wait about 2 months for it still but it was worth it.

    End user pays sales tax

    Resellers buying to resell don’t.

That’s the general rule of thumb for sales taxes on cars (or anything) - your state may vary.

Of course dealers pay “inventory taxes” - if their inventory increases in value - that’s an asset and taxed federally as well as state level - also many states treat vehicles as “property” so there is a local tax on that too dealers must pay on inventory.

In April I paid msrp around $44k for the only MGM CM with SR5 upgrade (bucket seats, fuel tank) that I could find within a 6 hr drive. Oregon added 0.5% sales tax. I was fine with it, needed to replace a totaled rig asap.

It pains me to read all 8 pages so far and see what people paid this time last year but understand the market has changed drastically.

I am looking at getting a:
    2021 Platinum CM
    Sunroof and tailgate lock
    MSRP $55,009
    Offer- $54,009 not including fees/tax

Most dealers in my area have marked up the MSRP by 5-10K for the Platinum and 15k+ for the TRD PRO

Doc fees are capped in Texas to around 160 but they can add other fees and some try. When I bought mine they tried to add on some bogus $600 fee. When I asked finance guy what it was he tried to explain it and I said time out. I am not paying anything extra except tt&l. He said that all customers pay it. I said not this one. Go get the keys to my trade. He got rid of it.
