2020 Tundra or wait?

    Hello everyone,

I own a 2012 4.0 V6 DC Tundra with 115,000 miles. My Tundra has been great to me and I have kept everything stock except the tires and window tint. I am looking to upgrade to a 2020 5.7 V8 CM. So my question is should I wait for the next Gen to come out, pull the trigger on a 2020 or if possible what mods can you do to a V6?

I would keep it and see what 2021 has in store. If you don't like the 2021 then you can always buy the 2020 at the end of the year.

Agreed. You can find year end models at a pretty good discount then. Having options is always good.

If you need a truck now (or soon) I would consider a 2020 because the first year of a redesign will have lower reliability so you'd potentially want to wait until 2022 if looking at a 4th gen.

I vote to wait. You may really like the new design. A powerful and fuel efficient truck may be worth the wait.
Plus, your truck looks great and it’s low miles.

I ordered a 2020. If the 2021 gets stronger, cheaper, more efficient, AND maintains durability/reliability I’ll regret my decision. Not likely.

There was someone in a different thread claiming to have inside knowledge that the redesign won't come until the 2022 model year, so it might be a bit longer than we first expected. Just something to think about, but I'd still wait until the redesign and then if you don't like it just get the last model of the current gen.

I just got a 2020 Limited like yesterday. Sales guy said new Venza is due in '22, he also said they are hearing Gen4 Tundra will be in '22, hybrid engine.

I got 140 miles so far and I'm pretty happy. Some will say the tech is too much and others say it's not enough. I'm still trying to figure out the Connected Services stuff and what the monthly cost will be.

I wouldn't want to buy the first year or two of a new generation anyway. I'd just go with a 2020.

I did the same thing when I had a 2007 Tacoma and they were coming out with the third gen. I bought a 2015 and they ended up being highly sought after once the third gen came out.

Maybe the next generation will have comfortable seats but you will forgo the 5.7 port injected V8 and the non-hunting 6 speed tranny.

I picked up the 2020 Limited as well. The 5.7 V8 roars. The gas tank is 38 gallons. It's got the remote start feature which was extra, but cool. I was trying to hold out for the new design, but I'm happy I went with what I've got. It's doing what I need it to. One drawback, lack of storage. The older Tundras had a great place to store things underneath the rear seat. My 2020 doesn't -- but I will be making a modification to that. I like to customize my things, so I don't mind taking a wrench and a few other tools to it.

If it's important to you have a look at the change of interior storage options from your DC to the Crewmax.

Next gen Tundra will likely have the stop/start and cylinder deactivation bull chit.

I've been hearing really bad things about that system. All the cars that have it are having oil consumption problem.
I hope they'll still have the 5.7 but with an 8 speed transmission. All 1/2 manufacturers out there are doing it now so they can squeeze out an extra 1000 lbs towing capacity while increasing fuel economy by 2-5 MPG over their previous 6 speed transmission. I drove the F150 5.0 with the 10 speed transmission as a rental for 2 weeks and thought it was absolutely amazing - effortless acceleration and really good fuel economy. I was actually getting 22+ mpg on road trips!

However, I've been hearing that Toyota has been having issues with their 8 speed in smaller cars and SUVs so I think they're still tuning it before putting into a truck. I just REALLY hope that the new engine/transmission combo doesn't end up with driving characteristics like the 3rd gen Tacoma. That thing is a disaster. I owned a 2019 V6 Tacoma.

There's plenty of threads about cutting under the rear seat to give you all sorts of storage option. Looks like you've already seen those. I'm happy throwing it in on the seat or in the tool box in the bed.

The new Tacoma was part of the evidence I used in my decision. If I bought a Tacoma it would 100% be a 2015.

If you want a new 5.7, buy now. Insiders are saying Toyota is going away from the v8 in favor of a v6. The redesign most likely won’t have a 5.7 option.

It’s a 12-year old engine design that will require significant investments just to have barely-credible fuel economy. If anything, they’d be crazy to keep it. Though I don’t like it, naturally-aspirated gasoline engines are going the way of the dodo bird.

Do any of the other model years appeal to you? I have a 2015 and am happy not having the TSS sensors and issues that come with it. And if you wait, you could always get an older model year if the new models are not to your liking.

    WELCOME!

Nice truck! Can’t believe they put a V6 in such a big heavy truck! Lol

    get the 5.7L! :muscleflexing:

F off Toyota with the v6 twin turbo or hybrid or electric shit in a truck!

    But that’s just my opinion.

When I first heard someone in the ford raptor with the new ecoboost V6 punch it, I had to laugh. Might be fast but it sounded like shit. Not what a $80-90k truck should sound like. It’s not a Italian sports car.

There could be a new smaller V8 in addition to the V6 hybrid option.

I would pay for a less fuel efficient V8 over the v6 hybrid.

I would get it now...by the sound of it I wouldn’t trust the 5.7L being there in 2022....
Plus I wouldn’t get a new design/engine/whatever is new for 3-4 years down the road so the bugs can get worked out
